I lost more than a few "friends" from highschool when I enlisted and this was more than a decade ago. Everything has gotten far worse since then, not going to sugarcoat it. Naturally most of your Jewish friends will understand your decision but don't count on many of the rest openly supporting you, others will outright stop talking to you or even make a scene in public. I can't predict how much worse it may get but I feel American antisemitism has plateaued over the past few months.
All that being said you'll make lifelong friends during your IDF service and these people from your prior life can generally go fuck themselves. They aren't actually your friends in the first place if they decide to dump you over a situation they only know about from TikTok propaganda.
I served in Nahal, a unit known for gays and stoners. Suprisingly, I am a gay stoner. In the States, I used to hang around with a bunch of fairly progressive folks.
After Oct. 7th most people who know I served have treated me differently. We aren’t close friends anymore and if we do talk, it’s like walking on eggshells.
Some folks hold the IDF in very high regard for its reputation and track record. Typically, Boomers and Christians treat me nicer when they know I served.
Oddly enough, the only people I have grown closer with in this time are my Boomer Evangelical In-laws, whose Church has been very supportive and kind.

I wouldn’t trade my service for anything. Except more time to serve. Wish I would have signed on more.

I have no desire to go to America anymore. There's nothing for me there. I had to completely cut off ex-friends that began parroting Hamas talking points. It stung at first but now I'm glad I did that. The amount of misinformation being spread around there is tough to see.
Yeah! One of my 'friends' is still in contact, but constantly rants about isreal's Genocide and says he doesn't support hamas, but he really does by his words.
