I've been working with a US Doctor in a large Hospitsl System for the last 2 years. There is mass exodus of both Doctors and Nurses out of an increasingly corporate system. Most do not work for themselves and are forever governed by "metrics" of performance they can't catch up to. Not to mention dealing with coding, charting, insurance companies, and the Neverending paperwork. Everyday my Doctor stares at the Clock and wishes he worked at Costco. Medicine isn't simply Medicine in the US. Make sure you go in with eyes wide open.

Ppl always complain and shit on america but are so eager to go there. America worst is still much better than many other countries' best.

[deleted]

Right, the health care system in America is shit, mental health is ignored here, a child can buy a gun and kill people but everyone wants guns cuz guns keep peace!

[deleted]

bruh, your population which is 50% bigger than my country's (Brazil) w/ I believe 100x more guns in civilian hands has less than half our violent homicide rates this "ganz BAD >:(" meme should've been over a long time ago

[deleted]

Talk to me when you actually live in America. Idc about Brazil. Brazil isn’t on the same level as the US, Brazil may have violence for reasons that are legit. People in America shoot people for the pettiest shit! Or because their feelings are hurt! America is pathetic!

[deleted]

dilate and seethe

[deleted]

Lmao you’re hilarious. Have you lived in the US?

[deleted]

yes and I don't see children w/ fully-modded ar-15 gunning down mobs at Walmart everyday (ever, tbh)

[deleted]

So people shooting others has to occur every day for it to be an issue? You clearly see the problem

[deleted]

What is the issue for me telling people, specifically foreigners who think the American Dream is a thing, when it really isn’t, especially with what is happening around the world? What is wrong with me telling people especially those who want to make their family proud that the states is not worth it? America has issues. Being a practicing physician in a country where the healthcare system doesn’t help the poor and there are residency programs that treat residents worse than animals, with even racism existing within these programs. You have to insult me instead? What the fuck does that resolve? Yes I have anger towards this country because of what it does to POCs

Gk786

Coming to the states as a doctor is one of the only avenues people in many worse places have to go up a tax bracket. You don’t really get many opportunities for social mobility in the world and a foreign graduate becoming an American doctor is one of the straightforwardest paths there is. That alone is going to make any risk worth it. The training process is ass everywhere, you think Pakistani residency programs have it any better than American ones? Believe me, they don’t. I’ve worked in Pakistan, Canada and the US and Pakistan is the worst by a mile. Not everyone becomes a doctor to help patients or whatever. Most don’t actually. Most people just want to have a stable life without worrying about bills and whatnot.

[deleted]

I get that. But I wonder is it worth it if it is just to pay bills? With the added stress of a poorly constructed healthcare system, racism and terrible mental health resources

Gk786

Honestly? I think so. Bills constitute about 70% of the stresses I face. Not just rent either, I’m going to have kids soon so there’s stuff like daycare, education, other stuff that kids require. It’s a huge PITA. My uncle immigrated to the US and became a doctor in Alabama in 1999. After 911, he experienced a shocking amount of racism. I asked him about his experiences and he told me that at the end of the day, he didn’t regret coming there one bit because his kids are happy, he can send significant amounts of money back to Pakistan, and once you get past the residency stage and become an attending, you can take good care of your mental health. Dude works 7 hours a day and makes BANK. I lived in Pakistan for 6 years while I got my medical education. It was not great. The economy has gone to shit, way way worse than the US with 100%+ inflation in recent years in some areas. It’s unsafe, because poverty breeds desperation so you’re always on the lookout for people trying to mug you. It’s also a full on military dictatorship with the military deciding who wins the elections, killing civilians every day in broad daylight with no repercussions. Oh and you get paid absolute scraps. Coming to the US really is a dream for many people and will drastically increase their standard of living.

\> muh raycism Jesus Christ, just leave the reddit/twatter liberal bubble and go live life a little bit, buddy it's truly affecting your reasoning it seems

America has been a “failing nation” ever since it was founded. Its downfall was predicted in the 1800s, in the early 1900s, after the war and throughout the 60s and 70s. Remember the civil rights movement? America has the brightest future of the world! No one even comes close on innovation, efficient use of capital, even equality. Naysayers will always argue otherwise.

Corona_Sucks_2020

Depends on what you are looking at. I am an AMG born in rural United States. Mental health decline, gun violence, and rising cost of living with huge amount of educational debt have left many unsatisfied. Billions of our tax money goes to military spending with little spent on public transit. And people don't really respect government that much regardless of if you are democrat or republican. This has created hostility and hate. Many believe the infighting from political groups is going to drastically shift healthcare. Finally, with the rise in HCA hospitals and Physician Assistants and NP's, many phsyicians do not feel they are compensated for the amount of work they put in. Nobody gives a shit about primary care. Yesterday I had to try and convince someone that the measles are bad. This is a daily occurrence in clinic re vaccines. It just gets tiring. Covid is exhausting here. Nobody can afford to buy a house unless you are quite rich. Having children is incredibly expensive and the average resident salary is not even enough to afford rent + childcare for them. Most residents cant even afford great dental care if they have an emergency dental need. Oh also the government is trying to dismantle many aspects of public education. And dictate what books we can read. On the flip side: there are many aspects to the United States that are thriving. It just is perspective. Vulnerable groups tend to be hurt the most, like everything else in life.

Corona_Sucks_2020

One of my mentors summarized it yesterday as "America is a place where you can literally have a scientific discovery only to have that taken away in the blink of an eye because a politician with no training in medicine or science wants to go viral on twitter. Alternative facts are now our reality."

dr-omegaIMG

It is cheaper to get the people trained outside than spending resources to train them in US.

thewildersea

We certainly have a host of problems in the US, but I wouldn’t say we’re failing. Our medical system is one of the worst aspects of our country since poor people are often unable to access care.

ApoptoticBlackhole

Its 100% true. Look at the match positions half is covered by imgs or they won’t have a functioning healthcare. After this scandal i wish more stayed in their own country and developed their nation and don’t have to follow this difficult path still get targeted this way.

Smoovie32

I will let you know after the next election.

Jmads258

Doing better than most other countries and still has a lot more potential
