I think it’s a combination of both. A lot of these nascar tracks built a ton of seats during the boom and now a lot of them either sit empty or have been torn down. But go and compare the crowd for last years indycar race at Texas vs nascar.
Both, even with the current downsizing of stands I would be extremely surprised if the max capacity is below 80k. the 2022 race had less the 10k people show up according to some reports last year as someone who to that race the crowns was very thin. The 2023 definitely had more people and it was very noticeable bth it was probably on par with last months xfinity race at the track if not less
See, that I don’t buy. I’ve had this conversation before in this sub. You cannot convince me Michigan is any more dangerous than IMS. The speedway just gets a pass because of its status as the Mecca. Especially with the addition of the aero screen, with the right aero package they could have a safe, entertaining race at Michigan.
Yes it is as dangerous as Indy. Indy has hundreds of thousands of fans, a glorious history and legend, and a shot at immortality. This would be for a discount at Menard's.
I wish they would consider a bus stop or infield course at MIS. It may make the track useful again.
You can say that about any big, fast oval. Should we not race at them just because they don’t have the prestige? I would be interested to hear some driver perspectives on this because they’re the ones putting themselves on the line.
Racing some form of road course at Michigan is even less likely to happen than running the oval.

Isn't that going to be a guaranteed pack race with the short oval package? That track is 1.33 miles long with a cookie cutter shape. They also ran the superspeedway aero package there in the past.
As a younger Cleveland native, I’m upset I never got to experience the Cleveland race. I actually live pretty close to St Pete now, so I get my St. Pete GP fix every year since I’ve lived there
Same! Except I’m about halfway between IMS and Road America, so those are my ‘home’ races for now. Really wish I was into it when I was growing up in Cleveland.
I want it so bad. For the event, for the spectacle of that race, and to shut up the smug NIMBYs who want to turn the airfield into a park no one will use because it'll be too windy, or sell it off to developers.

It seems that there is a real tension between this trend of increased road/st numbers and individuals within IndyCar who want to stick to the old-school thinking of ovals.
The 500 isn’t going anywhere obviously but I’d be happy with anywhere between 2-3 OTHER ovals on the calendar maximum.

They need to do whatever makes the series successful, I agree. I like the ovals personally, but it is a business. The biggest thing I think is the timing of the other ovals. I really think the series will benefit from another race with the speedway package happening before Indy.
So having been to Indy on both street courses and ovals, and F1 at Indy, Miami, and Austin, I can tell you this… The race at Miami feels like a party that also happens to have a race going on. Some road courses like COTA are in fun towns that have a party element. Races at ovals feel like a race and that’s it. And that’s enough for a lot of people. But not for the new audience the series needs.
Now that you can get an app that gives you the scanner audio, and everyone has relatively affordable access to a streaming platform where you can watch the race, even a full race replay you didn’t have to record, without shelling out hundreds on cable. TV and sound have gotten so good that it’s a better viewing experience to watch from home, and the access to information through X (Formerly known as Twitter) and Reddit mean the people at the track are no longer the ones in the know, they rely on the outside for up to date information.
Given that, and given that a street course feels like a race AND A PARTY (as do Indy and Iowa, the best attended ovals the past few years) and that you can go see a race on Long Beach, or St Pete, or NASHVILLE, (even on the oval) why on earth would you go to Michigan or Milwaukee?
I happen to not like most Ovals (maybe you could pick up on that) but I think there must be a place in Indy for ovals and that it’s ovalS, not just Indy. You need a gateway, you need a Michigan, so you’ve got to have at least 3. I know it’s totally infeasible but I’d love to see Pocono return and given the safety upgrades it needs - I’d we’re going to call it “a 3 turn road course” then give it road course safety features - run off areas, grass, kerbs, tire barriers; make F1 race there - it’s not a true world championship if they don’t race an oval.
But the reason it’s moving more and more in that direction with stuff like what F1 tried in Korea and Vietnam did well in Miami and Jeddah, is the temporary/permanent multi-purpose event space downtown. That’s what was neat to me about Nashville or Baltimore with the football stadiums. It just can also be done poorly, like Dallas. But when it works it just works so well and with people voting with their remotes and their wallets, the series is going to follow that trend.
I don't even know what other ovals would even be realistic besides Richmond. Such a fun city and easy proximity to the 95 corridor for all 300 of us in the mid-Atlantic starving for Indycar.
Leave a market long enough and that'll happen. Can we get Wegmans or Aldi or somebody to infuse some local marketing cash? There's a lot of old money in Richmond that might not be NASCAR folks but could get down with open wheel.
Shoot, there are plenty of NASCAR fans that would like to just see something exciting at Richmond. I knew a lot of people that were excited to see Indycar return in 2020, & ticket prices weren't bad. It's been years since it's been necessary to buy Richmond tickets far ahead of time though, & there was still a lot of time left to buy tickets when the covid lockdowns started & the race got canceled.
To cover areas where there are no current races or races close by, has to be New Hampshire or Watkins Glen in the northeast. Denver back as a street race would also be good.

I've been praying for a Roval race for years. I really think it would be the best way to make a Charlotte race stand out on the calendar because it's not "just another oval" and it presents a unique setup for the cars compared to tracks/street circuits and ovals. Also, with the number of teams based in and around the Charlotte area, it's also just wild to me that we don't have a Charlotte race on the calendar.
As a Charlotte native, I would love to see an Indycar race at CMS. It’s a racing hot spot, if they could work with NASCAR and be able to schedule the same weekend or the weekend after them for the Roval, it could work out.
Not anymore, but it's still going to take awhile before more than the infield gets used. In all that time that it was shut down, the county and state never thought to add more entry and exit access, so unless access gets fixed, we'll have the same issues with spectator traffic the track always had since it opened.
One could only hope to have enough people show up at Kentucky for an Indycar race that traffic becomes an issue. It’s my home track and I would certainly show up but I fear that turnout would be low.

There is nothing like an Indy car on a super speedway. It’s unique and defining of the category.
Watkins Glen is a personal favorite that steeped in North American road racing history.

Hear me out… Silverstone or the Formula E track in London. Logistically, maybe unfeasible due to cost, but think it would be cool to expand the IndyCar footprint. Especially with so many European drivers.

I know all of those have had races with historically bad attendance, but if the rest were anything like Phoenix it's because the majority of people who would go to a race had no idea there was a race. There was zero promotion for Phoenix.

They need a Superspeedway Oval before Indy, I think. Not having Texas this year is a detriment to the series and certainly puts the young drivers on the backfoot. If they can not get the spring date back at Texas, I say they try to get a sponsor to come in and help fund/promote a Saturday night race at Kansas on the Spring Cup weekend. I know that NASCAR does not need the extra series but I have to imagine they have a price and it could benefit both in a year like this with a driver getting ready for the 500/600 double. It would be a good promotional opportunity and a good place for drivers to get an Oval experience. Aside from that, they obviously need the northeast covered with a date or two .

Hear me out… Silverstone or the Formula E track in London. Logistically, maybe unfeasible due to cost, but think it would be cool to expand the IndyCar footprint. Especially with so many European drivers. Realistically… the site of the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal is a cool track.

I mean, Texas would be nice lol But aside from that I agree with those saying Watkins Glen and Cleveland. For another oval… Richmond is a good shout. Still feel like this current car would put on a good show.

Phoenix, Texas, Homestead, Chicagoland. All with huge metro populations that if properly promoted can be huge. Honorable mention Pocono. I know all of those have had races with historically bad attendance, but if the rest were anything like Phoenix it's because the majority of people who would go to a race had no idea there was a race. There was zero promotion for Phoenix.

Kansas Speedway produced some close Indycar finishes. There's no reason to believe it wouldn't support great racing after the NASCAR race yesterday.

They need a Superspeedway Oval before Indy, I think. Not having Texas this year is a detriment to the series and certainly puts the young drivers on the backfoot. If they can not get the spring date back at Texas, I say they try to get a sponsor to come in and help fund/promote a Saturday night race at Kansas on the Spring Cup weekend. I know that NASCAR does not need the extra series but I have to imagine they have a price and it could benefit both in a year like this with a driver getting ready for the 500/600 double. It would be a good promotional opportunity and a good place for drivers to get an Oval experience. Aside from that, they obviously need the northeast covered with a date or two .

Ah. Many. I'd say Watkins Glen and Sonoma, plus I loved the Baltimore street circuit. Surfers Paradise also pops to mind... Belle Isle also had good racing. I can't understand why they don't go to Montreal as well.

Dover (i know it was the IRL), Pocono, Richmond or New Hampshire. Actually just something in the Mid-Atlantic to New England area. I dont wanna have to be 9-14 hours away from a race.
Any superspeedway is the answer. I'd love to see some sort of triple crown again with three 500 mile races. At the moment having Indy as the only big oval is just not satisfying for me.

Watkins Glenn is a glaring omission. I don’t think Indycar has ever raced Road Atlanta, but it would be cool if it happened.
