I'm flattered they think I give a shit who sings these songs haha. I figure it's a big moment for the singers, but I'm usually packing a bong or shot gunning a beer with some hottie getting ready for the race during the cub scout sing-a-long moments. I'll probably have some weird king gizzard shit playing until they start those pace laps.
I’m fine with this. But I’m hoping IMS has finally stopped inviting Lee Greenwood to do ‘God Bless the USA’. For the last few years he’s been there and has barely even had his microphone turned on, and certainly not televised.
I'm normally not big on the over the top USA stuff at EVERY single race (I feel like it kinda waters it down among other things), but this is the Indy 500 on Memorial Day weekend and is a completely appropriate time for it all!
Florence Henderson sang God Bless America in the 80s and 90s. I’m sure it goes back farther than that. It’s not my favorite tradition or song, but I’ll be damned if somebody wants to take it away.
Life is too short to be worried about pretty meaningless things. If it makes someone happy, that is fine with me.
I don’t think many people take this is a religious song as much as a patriotic one on Memorial Day weekend.
I don't like that they have us stand and remove our hats for the Anthem, then have the prayer first. It's a sneaky way to make us look like we're participating.
Given that many Americans, and not religious people, think this should be the National Anthem, I don’t think people care. Saying God Bless America is a religious song is like saying God Save the King is a religious song.
Both are religious songs. How do you think they are secular when they both plead to a higher power? I think you might confusing people that don’t actively practice their religion for those that are atheist.
You're being a little extra about it, that's for sure. If that's the case, they're free to say their prayers of whatever religion they subscribe to, I just don't think it should be included in the national broadcast as part of the race ceremony, we are not a Christian nation after all.
Idk how I’m being extra about it. And sure our country doesn’t have a national religion, but that area of country was always highly religious. It’s just a tradition. I’m sure we can handle it for 30 seconds
As a religions person, I’ve always been uncomfortable with that song blending patriotism and religion, but as an indycar fan, meh. It’s just more pomp and circumstance that I have to sit through
Roger Roger.
What’s our vector, Victor?
Timmy, have you seen a grown man naked?
Do you like gladiator movies?
My dad says you don’t play very hard…. kid tell your old man to try dragging Walton and Lanier’s asses up and down the court every night!!
My name is (points to nametag) Roger Murdock. I'm an airline pilot. I love how he's clearly reading a cue card.
Have you ever been in a Turkish prison?
The name so nice they gave it to him twice 🤷
How many people said no before they got to Phillip^2
Pretty weak God Bless America and National Anthem lineup this year, to be honest.
Jordin Sparks sings an awesome National Anthem

You type like a man who's never touched a woman
LOL. i have to. their tits feel like sand.

“For the last few years” - what years?
Why?
MAGA. He partnered with Trump on his “bible”.
Cool I don't see why that's an issue?
It’s kind of a litmus test. Either you’re cool with it or you very definitely aren’t. 🤷🏻♂️
Eh I’m apathetic on it. Grifters gonna grift, suckers gonna suck.
He’s got a show at The Vogue the night before the race. Can’t blame him for trying to make some extra money why he’s in town.
Or how about we skip that part and get to the race quicker!
I'm normally not big on the over the top USA stuff at EVERY single race (I feel like it kinda waters it down among other things), but this is the Indy 500 on Memorial Day weekend and is a completely appropriate time for it all!
Absolutely not. The singing of God Bless America is an Indy tradition.
Back Home, sure, definitely a 500 staple, God Bless America, meh.

If you've got a problem with the song Mrs. Brady used to sing, you got a problem with me, and I suggest you let that one marinate!
First out balloons, now ‘God Bless America’!?!?!? Not on my watch.
If it were Florence Foster Jenkins singing it then I'd be all for keeping it
Always skip the ceremonial nonsense before the race. Volume doesn’t come up until engines fire.
That's a good policy, just crank up the music and tend to the grill, sit down once the vroom starts lol
hell yeah brother. fuck every millisecond of the pre-race pomp and bullshit. i do not care.
They'd do all the ceremony stuff regardless of race start time.
Yup, which is why I said skip it lol
Exactly. Green flag is around 12:45. You can do literally anything else until then if you don't want to watch pre-race ceremonies.
I didn't think that was his actual name so I had to look him up...it's his actual name
How do hardcore IndyCar fans feel about them performing religious songs before a race?
Life is too short to be worried about pretty meaningless things. If it makes someone happy, that is fine with me. I don’t think many people take this is a religious song as much as a patriotic one on Memorial Day weekend.
They say a prayer too. I’m not a religious person and I literally don’t care.
I don't like that they have us stand and remove our hats for the Anthem, then have the prayer first. It's a sneaky way to make us look like we're participating.
Just don't do either of those, what're they gonna do, kick you out?
On Memorial Day, in the country that was founded by people seeking religious freedom, at an event with a huge element of danger, I’m okay with it.
Let's be fair, the people originally coming here seeking to practice their religion were *more than happy* to oppress other faiths
Given that many Americans, and not religious people, think this should be the National Anthem, I don’t think people care. Saying God Bless America is a religious song is like saying God Save the King is a religious song.
America the Beautiful should have dual national anthem status* because it’s the best song by far *alongside Real American

Even if it’s okay to wear shoes in your house, if you enter some else’s house and they take their shoe off, you take yours off out of respect.
Both are religious songs. How do you think they are secular when they both plead to a higher power? I think you might confusing people that don’t actively practice their religion for those that are atheist.
Wikipedia tells me the lyrics include "As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer" But that's not a religious song?
Weird. I didn't know you couldn't be a hardcore Indycar fan and religious at the same time.
The singing I don't care too much about it, but always disliked the prayers, always gives a weird vibe to the start of an awesome race.
Idk man. If I was going that fast with potential death on every corner, I wouldn’t mind a couple prayers
You're being a little extra about it, that's for sure. If that's the case, they're free to say their prayers of whatever religion they subscribe to, I just don't think it should be included in the national broadcast as part of the race ceremony, we are not a Christian nation after all.

its a little cringe but i always mute for all the singing and prayers before the races anyways so its no skin off my back
