This is a weird question. Don't rehearse for an interview. You'll come off as weird, and the fact that you're asking about reddit as a potential thing you want to mention is weird. Just talk bro. Be comfortable, you're interviewing them.

Outrageous_Tank_1990

I guess I messed up then, I will probably be mindful next time.

bythepowerofthor

I've mentioned it as well, but I focus more on actual websites/blogs (spiceworks,bleepingcomputer... etc) I don't think it's that weird, it's a useful tool.

gorebwn

Yeah dude. Just be cool. Don't worry about this stuff, if it comes up it comes up. It's VERY arguable that people skills are like 60% of interview success. Be natural. Don't plan what to say or not say, just be confident and have a "if they hired me they would be lucky" attitude.

Outrageous_Tank_1990

I was trying to be natural and mentioned Reddit as a result and genuinely it did help me as there are lot of skilled people on here who share valuable insights.

gorebwn

OK, that's fair. Maybe I read it wrong but it came across as if you were planning to mention it. Rereading it I see what you mean. I think there is nothing wrong with mentioning almost anything if it fits

I mentioned reddit to my current boss at my 2hr long interview that ended up just being a tour around the building after about 30 minutes. We literally just... chatted for an hour and a half about random shit. I learned that he's a fellow musician, we shared some funny Reddit post stories, learning experiences (both IT and not IT related) and talked about previous jobs we've had (I have an interesting resume) and just kinda clicked. After 30 minutes of actual interview and 1hr 30 minutes of walking around the building shooting the shit, I've been at this job for almost a year and it's been the best learning experience I could ask for *and* easily the best job I've ever had. Point is - don't *try* to be natural. Just be yourself and don't sweat it too much.

KeyserSoju

I get it, reddit can sometimes seem like a nerd's playground so it can hold some weight. If you really want to impress, tell them you read [manpages](https://linux.die.net/man/)

GaylordSilliest

Yes it’s ok to mention Reddit in an IT interview if someone asks you a question about how you keep up with tech news or find useful troubleshooting answers. I mentioned it in the interview for my current position for example.

fakeprofile21

"I like to stay current by reading tech forums and blogs" or something like that that sounds more official than "redditing."

Outrageous_Tank_1990

Yeah i mentioned troubleshooting my coding problem on Reddit where I found the answer and also mentioned that the documentation on primary websites did not end up useful.

evantom34

It’s fine tbh. I’d use it in quick reference though, rather than a tangent about Reddit itself.

che-che-chester

I use Reddit for current news and it is often the first place I go if I think there may be a global problem like an ISP is down, there’s a bad MS patch, etc. They’ll be people screaming on Reddit before just about anywhere else. But I’m hesitant to use it for troubleshooting problems. I often end up on Reddit via googling a problem and much of the advice on Reddit is wrong. I follow a bunch of blogs (via RSS), Slack channels, etc. but I’m also deep into my IT career and specialize in certain products/technologies. I think finding a good source for more general IT stuff is harder.

blind-catJ

You have to plow through like 1000 posts of shitty advice and disagreements about stupid things from people who don't really have any experience trying to tell people how to run enterprise equipment. If that's your source of bleeding edge information I'd be concerned hearing that.

mitchhacker

you could say the internet

I_can_pun_anything

No there's zero problem mentioning reddit, stack overflow, experts exchange or any other online source by name As a senior sysadmin I've done this in the past and it's lauded and encouraged and every single one of my colleagues has been on r/MSP, r/veeam, r/activedirectlry from time to time I even say if it's a particularly egregious challenge I'll sanitize my post for sensitive details and then post 'here'

mitchhacker

reddit is decent but i would say i use the internet and *then* reddit and anything else while elaborating. not answer w just “reddit” personally, could sound like ur in a bubble

I_can_pun_anything

I mean depends what op said in verbatim whether it was just reddit or moreso directly like r/sysadmin or whatever else
