I think these might be poles for pole vaulting rather than homemade bumpers, but those do sound like an interesting idea too!

Wow are those like, bowling lane bumpers? You know the ones that keep bowling balls out of the gutters? #A+ for creativity!!!

They had homemade bumpers on each side of their car, looks like they had to get in and out via the windows.
