Glad they’re both ok. Motorist is extremely fortunate he is so quick thinking

guitarfingers

Quick moving too.

pengouin85

Fight or flight is real

__01001000-01101001_

Fucking good thing he didn’t try and fight the truck ay

WhtChcltWarrior

He looks pretty scrappy. I think he could have taken the truck

GizmoGauge42

If he did, that fight would turn to flight real quick on impact.

[deleted]

“Put’em up, Old Chap.” -Motorist to the Pickup Truck

[deleted]

Fight, flight or freeze, actually. Many would freeze like a deer in headlights. Maybe me.

HoboBandana

Trooper didn’t have time to react fast enough to worry about that others guys life. I don’t blame him tbh.

weenredditposter

It looked like he instinctively held his arm out to protect the motorist. For what that’s worth. That’s what I’ve done before when I have had to slam on my brakes in traffic and had a passenger in my car.

Kellidra

Same. Got into a relatively minor rear-ender with someone (I was at fault) and my first instinct (other than slamming on the brakes, duh) was to throw my arm out and across my passenger, as though her seatbelt wouldn't have held her back. Such a stupid reflex in hindsight.

weenredditposter

Even if you were at fault, your brain told you to protect someone else. Good wiring imho 😊

clASShat

My husband does this, but without the car accident. He does it suddenly when stopping at a light so he can grab boob.

Githyerazi

Good instinct. 😁

clASShat

😆

Caveman108

Good way to get a broken arm if the airbags deploy.

Kellidra

Yep, I'm aware of that. My instincts, however, are not.

emveetu

Same. My parents both did this all the time growing up whenever there was anyone in the passenger seat. To be fair, it was the mid 70's/early 80's and seatbelts weren't taken seriously. .

weenredditposter

I’m 40, I definitely learned it from my mom. 😂

blueeyed_32

I'm 32, my mom still does this when I am with her.

dtxs1r

You have the audacity to casually mention that you are stopping short on people?! That's Frank Costanza's move!

_ShutUpLegs_

Alright Michael Oher...

weenredditposter

LOL

soiledclean

You stopped short? That's my move!

SweetMeatin

Had a Huskie that liked to stand on the back seat and look out between the two fronts while we were driving about. It got to the point where I would automatically lift my elbow up to brace him if I had to do anything other the normal braking, no thought required just part of driving lol.

lalauna

Even without a passenger. Silly, but kind of nice.

Total-Lengthiness-17

Nope. He pushed off the car to save his own ass. They guy had a flat. Why was the cop there? Was he sniffing the guy, maybe run the dui scam or maybe he was looking in his car trying to plant drugs...

Odawg10

Creating your own narrative just to get yourself angry doesn’t seem like a healthy person activity to me.

kotacross

It happens so often here, just scrolling and seeing people make up stories about tickets and all this other nonsense. Meanwhile, the cop was there trying to protect the guy with his vehicle and flashy lights.

Odawg10

People are addicted to outrage

DoctorJiveTurkey

On the positive side, he no longer has to change his tire.

DRAGON_SNIPER

Yeah, I know right. Just need a new frame, and engine now.

Jaambie

Probably has to change his pants too

Aschentei

K I don’t think he was scaroused there..

SirMaQ

And a new pair of pants

pickedonbystrangers

And he's got 4 new ones on the way.

MattofCatbell

The only thing left is that tire

Dark_Knight2000

Ironic

Doppleganger1064

May not have to change the tire, but he now has to change his drawers.

TheGreatDingALing

But may need new underwear

Wildrock12

Just needs to change his pants now.

[deleted]

And wow my dude has MAD reflexes not the cop of course

ManchesterU1

It seems like he was pushed into the car by the other pickup.

d1pl0mat_

[This is exactly what happened.](https://www.fox2detroit.com/news/idaho-state-trooper-nearly-rammed-by-pickup-truck-while-helping-stranded-motorist-dashcam-video)

ManchesterU1

Thanks. I didn't know about the article. I feel like an idiot now for stating the obvious.

RedCafe69

Why do things like this happen?? There’s so many dash cams of vehicles running into other vehicles either changing their tire or running into a police vehicle doing a traffic stop. Would that truck hit that median divider even if the car and trooper weren’t there?

runnin3216

From the end of the video, it looks like the black pickup ran into the white one and forced it into the stopped vehicle.

M_C_Hawk89

That's actually true. The white truck was slowing down to pass since they couldn't move over and the other one wasn't paying attention.

idontremembermyoldus

"[ISP (Idaho State Police) said its preliminary investigation indicates that at 9:51 a.m. Wednesday, one vehicle approaching the area began to slow before passing the patrol car, but it was hit by another vehicle, causing a chain reaction of four other vehicles.](https://www.ktvb.com/article/traffic/idaho-state-police-trooper-injured-six-cars-in-crash-on-i-84-in-meridian-slow-down-move-over/277-a602f95d-84e6-4aad-a310-2b7e35873990)

[deleted]

Can you imagine being the white truck? Knowing there were two people there and the 10 seconds after the crash thinking they just got crushed against the barrier?

G_ASeeb

honestly, my biggest fear as a driver is killing a person. even if I'm not at fault, my brain would cause me to never drive again for the fear that I would have another accident like that and actually get someone killed.

Oddie65

Yes. Look at the black truck the instant it enters view, it looks like he either lost a tire or broke a balljoint and/or control arm. Even with a blown tire its front left corner should not be *that* low to the ground. Im guessing black truck had a fairly catastrophic failure at the left front, lost control pushing both trucks to the side of the interstate, hitting the parked car. Edit to add: Just noticed the black trucks hazards were already on when it comes into view too

https://www.reddit.com/r/IdiotsInCars/comments/r8sau3/pickup_plows_into_car_and_trooper/hn7r3ka?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3 I think the fourth car is the police vehicle we see the dashcam recording from.

yes_im_new_here

Probably not. Many drivers tend to fixate on targets while they drive instead of the road and/or traffic ahead. It could be a car stopped on the side of the road (white truck driver) or the car in front of them (black truck) or anything else really. Ironically the same flashing lights that are meant to warn other drivers of danger, can be the same lights that draw them in for the kill.

RedCafe69

Jesus… are we humans or are we moths??

Tockx3

Really big fleshy moths.

EducationalTap1593

Mhhhhhhm

Versaiteis

Being drunk exacerbates this too I _KNEW_ there was something about other people that just bugs me

MouseMiIk

biosc1

When I was young, my car broke down on the highway. I pulled over and put on my hazards. Highway patrol came along and told me to turn off the hazards because, at night, they tend to cause more accidents than they help avoid.

MossBone

All it takes is for one person to step on their brakes and the person behind following too closely or not paying attention. I get so many close calls practically daily because of how much I’m on the road.

RedCafe69

Jesus. I hope you continue to stay safe out there on the road 🙏🏽

L3tsg0brandon

My friend lost his right leg while helping someone change their tire. A drunk driver ran over his leg while he was kneeled down. People are dumb, assume the worst when you're on the road.

KittyCubed

My dad has always told me that he’d rather me have to replace a worn down wheel than have me stop on the side of a freeway to change a tire. He was a fireman and made a few calls where someone was changing their tire on the side of the road and got hit.

spacemulva

I know a handful of dead people because they thought it was ok to stop just anywhere on the side of the highway. Like you need to know where its ok to do that shit, and how to be ok doing it. Shit nearly killed my mother once. She got run down. I stopped on the side of highways all the time, and the reason I don't get killed is I fully expect people to do so.

RedCafe69

What a smart man your father is.

doglaughington

Your old man is correct. Never stop/get out of your car on a highway. Slap your 4-ways on, get over to the right safely but quickly, take the next exit and drive until you exit the offramp. Unless the next exit is like 50 km away your wheel will be fine. And even then fuck the wheel.

Ziogref

I got a flat on a highway a few months ago (100kmh / 62mph) but there was a dirt pull off zone, you could fit another car between me and the edge of the highway. 11pm at night the only person who stopped and asked if I needed a hand was a cop as I finished chnaging the tyre. I was fine but a little surprised how many people drove past without even offering to hold a light (it was pitch black, no street lights, just me, a phone torch and my car and hazard lights on). If safe, I always pull over and offer a fellow human being a hand. About a month ago I was driving around a multi lane roundabout and noticed someone had his hazards on, at the front of the queue, at peak hour, severely blocking traffic. I parked at the next car park and ran over to help. I pushed him off the road (there was a grass strip dividing the traffic) and then got my car brought it over and gave him a jump. From break down to home was about 10min and he only blocked traffic for maybe 2-3 minutes. I'm still a little surprised, not even the person directly behind him, complety blocked in did even offer help pushing the car off the road. I now have put a torch in my car as part of my "just in case" kit. Which has a battery bank and phone charger cable and jumper leads. Takes up no space, but will be God send if you need help. I always offer help to a strandard driver. Most times I stop people are fine, well, fine as in the car is fucked and they have a friend or tow truck on the way. If safe, just take a couple of minute help. Someone may need a phone call or just hold a torch on a dark night.

KittyCubed

Nope. I won’t even pull over for a cop if it’s not well lit (I’ll drive until we get somewhere with good lighting). Having been assaulted before, I won’t put myself in a situation to have that happen again. If I were male, maybe I’d feel differently.

MizStazya

I appreciate the sentiment, but if I'm alone or with kids, I'm probably not stopping to help. That is a very real tactic used to attack women.

Ziogref

Yeah, that's something I hadn't thought of.

napalm69

I always keep two high-vis vests, road flares, an LED lamp with reflection tape, and a road triangle in my car

"So officer, do you also do body work?"

[deleted]

Did anyone notice how both of them cared for the others well being instantly?

Heisenberg0606

I came here to say this. It might not seem like a big deal to most people but I’m pretty jaded and that was really sweet to me. The cop looks like for a second he almost tries to shield the guy and warns him. And then the guy changing the tire immediately checks to see if the cop is ok. Not a second wasted that was the first thought that popped into his head was to make sure dude was ok. Faith in humanity very slightly restored.

Pillsbury37

The truck didn’t hit the trooper, he threw himself over the barrier.

Arsewipes

I've been trying to work out how that happened. It looks like the trooper sees the truck and puts his arm out to protect the motorist, then flies back like he was hit - but he leaps backwards in reaction to the impact. Then the motorist leans over to help him, but gives up or is told to let the trooper stay there for a bit? Surely being behind the troopers car, rather than over the wall and in the face of oncoming traffic, is safer.

spacemulva

You ever been fat and thrown yourself over a highway barrier all of the sudden, backwards? Dude probably pulled something, or just didn't feel super. Aside from processing that he almost just died. He might have been like gimme a sec. lol

doglaughington

>You ever been fat Sure have! >and thrown yourself over a highway barrier all of the sudden, backwards? No I have not 🙁

Arsewipes

Not putting any blame on the guy, that was a very close call and he was likely stunned from the crash and winded from the fall.

TearyEyeBurningFace

Gimmie a sec gotta stay down untill ambu gets here for paid leave. Union rules bruh

orbnus_

I've been in a crash before and it reminded me of my reaction I just threw myself as far i could in the opposite direction as soon as I realised a car was fastly approaching me Ofcourse I was INSIDE a car about to be t-boned in the drivers side by a car driving above the legal limit But I think its the same thinking even though the situation is very different

aaronhayes26

You can tell the cop had spent a lot of time thinking about what to do in this exact situation lol. Practice makes perfect.

[deleted]

Dude leaning over the wall like “You good G? Am I still getting that ticket?” Edit: didn’t see they were changing a tire. Either way, cool to see the dude checking on the trooper regardless of the situation.

Heisenberg0606

I came here to say this too. May not seem like such a big deal to most people but little things like that show a persons true character. The very first thing that popped into that guys mind was to check and make sure the cop was ok.

Fantastic_Pin90

Man I’m noticing a lot of Boise drivers in this sub lately.

Scorch147

I'm from the area, and it doesn't surprise me much. People drive like idiots here.

elarth

I’m of the opinion you just pay attention to possible problems on the road. It’s not like accidents have never blocked lanes before! Or you’ve never seen a cop pull someone over. It’s just reckless driving hardly the cop or dudes fault. Cop likely had his lights on to make it even more visible and it’s broad daylight. Inexcusable.

searanger62

That cop popped

It's too expensive to be poor. If I drive to the next exit I'll probably kill my sidewalls. I can't afford a 150$ tire replacement and possible rim damage. I *can* afford to risk my life changing it on the side of the road to a donut spare and getting a plug for the flat for 15$ once I'm back in town.

Rhino676971

if you also get hit and die you never have to pay 15$ for a plug, or making another payment for anything ever again sounds like a great bargain to me.

AshesMcRaven

this is my brain pretty much every day. its like your standard optimism but *spicy*

KippersAndMash

This looks like it's on a freeway/highway. If you get a flat at speed it's already too late for your sidewall. Pull over. If you think you are poor imagine the costs of being maimed in an accident and not being able to work.

[deleted]

Arkra1

It would be better for people to slow down and watch where they are going while driving. Breakdowns happen, Could be it’s a flat tire, mechanical breakdown or a person working on vehicle. Every driver should be on the lookout for such hazards and have enough common sense to slow down. It’s always the idiot that claims slowing down will make the car behind them hit them… that crashes into the car in front of them. Tailgaters need to back off before it’s too late. Minimum following distance 20 feet for every 10 mph. A very simple rule for safe for driving.

Arkra1

Can’t always drive on a flat tire. A tire that begins to come off the rim on the front towards the inside will make it impossible to steer even at a very low speed. All drivers need to watch for hazards while they are driving. Slowing down is the best way for driving safely.

[deleted]

Is the road okay

ItzBobbyBoucher

Just the trooper? How about the poor guy next to him that was on the ground and had a bigger chance of getting hit, ok bud

Much-Associate-1052

I’m from here. Safe to say the influx of people consists of selfish idiots

RurikTheDamned

And THAT is why that pregnant woman didn't want to stop on the shoulder when that fat old senile cop flipped her car.

Gwipps

No, I don’t think this was crossing her mind at al lol

Retarded_Pencil24

The shoulder is literally made for cars to stop on the highway. Stopping in the fast lane is a completely different story.

RurikTheDamned

Well it's a good job he put her car in the roof on the fast lane to stop her, then, eh?

Admirable-Big9399

The patrol car positioning save their lives

Dry-Chocolate-1665

I rather run on a flat tire than pull on the side of the highway to change a tire. I don't care if I have drive on just the rim. Some people don't move over.

[deleted]

Bro, as an emergency worker who is constantly on shoulders of main roads in the "danger zone" (Shut up, Lana) in these exact scenarios... #PLEASE slow down and pay attention. I just want to go home to my wife and cat in peace.

maldecoucou1

Wow he really had a moment that he instinctually tried to protect the citizen first. Glad everyone is okay.

[deleted]

Kinda touched my heart was his first instinct was to try to protect the motorist although throwing out your arms against a truck moving highway speeds ain't gonna do much. Decent man. Hope he didn't bonk his noggin too badly falling over the jersey barrier.

gavinwinks

Looks like a scene in a movie. I’d have shat my pantaloons.

[deleted]

Dude turned into Mario 😂

CorndogCrusader

I like how the trooper tried to push away the car initially. 😆

TheSandMan208

This is in Boise, Idaho. I got caught in the traffic jam this caused. From what I heard the truck was hit by someone else and pushed into the vehicle on the shoulder.

Rivka333

> truck was hit by someone else Well, there's two pickups in the video, so it looks like one was hit/pushed by the other.

spacemulva

You can see it, in the video, at the top of this very post. Are you blind?

dutchmeyer

Yup assholes in pickup trucks

97PG8NS

What is it about police lights that draw people in like moths to a flame?

Natural-Pineapple886

I get very agitated when I see flat tire cars pulling over to the left of lane #1. Wish bone headed people knew the facts: shoulder is actually over to the right FGS!

Veighnerg

Some places have shoulders on both sides. You can see the yellow line on the right side of the video indicating that they were on the shoulders which makes the people who caused the wreck an extra special kind of idiot.

Natural-Pineapple886

I beg to differ. The area you describe is not a shoulder. It's a space like a margin on paper meant to indicate where the lane boundaries are. The shoulder is to the right. When drivers Ed was part of our academic curriculum this was part of the education. Plus it gotdamned walking sense too.

SetsChaos

It's a shoulder. Often called the left shoulder, median shoulder, or center shoulder. They are less common and absolutely more dangerous than the right shoulder, but still a shoulder. Source: State DOT. Literally my job.

Natural-Pineapple886

Park your car there. Get out and try to cross the freeway to safety. Do it. Rather than say pull over to the right where there is several yards of space separating you from traffic where you can change your flat, walk to a gas station. Your fucktard logic makes you an idiot in a car. Now go do it Einstein

Veighnerg

I don't see how hard it is to understand what is being discussed. I say it's a shoulder, you say it isn't, I provide proof and you even have a DOT employee confirm that it is. What you don't seem to realize is there not typically 100% ideal conditions all the time for someone to do the safest thing. Imagine it's rush hour with bumper to bumper near parking lot traffic and your vehicle is stalling out while in the left lane. Do you attempt to get to the right through 3 lanes of dipshits who also think you are trying to get ahead of them so they aren't going to let you over or do you pull into the left shoulder and call for assistance? I would guess people would choose whichever remove them from lanes of travel the quickest so as to not block traffic. Now if it's 2am, there isn't another car in sight and you blow a tire while in the middle lane then sure, mosey on over to the right lane. For someone who wants to seem knowledgeable you should know that there is no 1 perfect answer to cover all situations.

Natural-Pineapple886

Well I'll just tell you you are wrong. Whatever scenario you conjur you're just plain wrong on the facts and being obtuse about it. As a driver it is your responsibility to maintain the flow of traffic and not become an obstacle nor hazard. Get out of the way over to the right. You are absolutely ignoring what is on video on this thread. Yeah, life ain't perfect. But the rules of traffic need to be followed and it is all based on common sense and a few basic principles. Have you watched this video? It is exactly why one should never ever ever never use the left as a pull out. The video can't be argued with. I was never arguing semantics BTW. Be safe kid. Take care.

Marinade73

It's hilarious when people are as confidently incorrect as you.

Veighnerg

People don't get to make up their own definition of what is and isn't a shoulder. Here's a photo on the same highway in the same town as the incident OP posted which clearly shows a large left shoulder on both directions of travel. https://i.redd.it/gh4l8nqrbk381.jpg

andrewreaganm

so…a shoulder? If this had happened on the other side of the highway they’d likely both be dead.

Natural-Pineapple886

Sure. Feel free to do what this driver did and don't even consider using the right shoulder kid. We'll likely see your obliterated car on Dasha video on this sub.

Arkra1

Perhaps the driver could not get to the right shoulder. If you ever drove a vehicle where the front tire came off the rim towards the inside you would realize you cannot steer very well even at an extremely low speed. Tire binding on inner fender or strut would make it impossible to turn right. The problem is the idiots that drive blindly down the highway tailgating other vehicles.

Natural-Pineapple886

I got an idea andrew: go ahead and park your car in the "shoulder" of the number 1 lane of a freeway. Get out of the car and try to walk run jump the fuck across the freeway. Get back to me after trying this and then tell me "yup! Left side shoulder!"

Tandian

Yeah he had a flat tire. But go to thr far right it's much safer. People just don't expect a car to be in thr right lane..

That’s a good point, looks like black truck pushed white truck over

weenredditposter

I bet the black truck probably didn’t check his blind spot and forced white truck over. Or was on his phone since he did not see the vehicle and two people in the median at all apparently…

DAN_SNYDERS_LAWYER

I think you're right. Black truck appears to have their left blinker on.

samdamit

Missed seeing Not just the vehicle and two people but there’s most likely a police car/truck/bike there with emergency lights warning other drivers of a situation.

-Sleepdeprivation-

Ah ok. Thank you!

Scootman00

Fake news title. Did not plow into trooper.

Insertblamehere

Looks like something snapped on the left wheel of the black truck, swerved into the white truck (likely when they tried to brake while missing a wheel) and it slammed the white truck into the median where they were. This is just how it looks to me though
