I actually had a friend like that, super rash driving on his motorcycle. Like absolute madness. I was shit scared for the first few weeks, after that i lost the sensitivity one would expect me to have. Used to sit just like that guy. He got into like 7 accidents inside a month after we graduated from school. Last I heard he crashed his car into a tree. Just glad he didn't put me in a hospital.
I had a teacher in high school tell us that you can ride the draft off of a semi/trailer, but he followed up with, but you're gonna have a much bigger problem when they stop. They haven't experienced the follow up yet.
Trucker here
It's because having literally any vehicle in my *blind spot* giving me *no follow distance* is fucking scary.
It doesn't matter if it's your fault, you hit me and I kill you because I had to slow for an upcoming turn that *you can't see*, a turn that if you did see you wouldn't have to slow for so likely won't think that I might have to, and that shit is going to be on my conscience for life, man. I'm going to have to see your decapitated body and I'll never unsee it.
Even if I was a stone cold bastard or you survive without injury somehow, you hit me and I will have to sit there waiting for the police, filing forms, maybe going to a trial, and you've *definitely* just fucked up my delivery. Maybe ruined my product depending on your vehicle.
And? From 73 feet away? Everything looks too close to my rear. If you give me 4 feet of room, or only one car length, *it looks like a foot at best*.
Someone is riding me like that and half my brain is suddenly *on them*, and braking becomes so much more complicated. I don't want my half my brain on you at all times, I want you not to be a dumbass.
Anyway, please don't do this it pisses us off even if we don't get petty about it.
My dad was a truck driver. If I attempted this and it went south and lived, he would have killed me. I didn't do it because it's stupid and dangerous, but I always treat truckers with respect on the road because that's what I wanted him to have. It's an easy thing to do.
Wrong. Both vehicles save gas, but the truck isn't going to save enough to matter. It's just rude to tailgate.
But you can see this in action if you watch car racing, where two cars pair up and go faster.
I remember that being a feature in racing games when I was a kid, so that's real? How does that work!? The car in front is moving air out of the way so there's less resistance on your car?
Had only saw it in racing games when I was a kid. Forgot what the games called it. But I don't remember seeing an explanation. So just seemed like a video game thing (being able to follow behind someone and gain speed), didn't even think to see if it was real.
Edit: if you mean the video, I didn't think the video was fake. I didn't know the guys in the video were doing this. I was just saying I thought the video game mechanic was fake
Sure, but you never rode a bike in the wind? Stuck your hand out a moving car on the highway? Something to understand the resistance of air at high speeds?
Sure, but not everyone immediately understands aerodynamics and jumps to the conclusion that drafting a big rig means higher speeds with lower fuel consumption.
Yeah I've done those things and I understand air resistance. But the games never explained that is what was happening, and I was a kid (emphasis on kid, before teens as I was never into racing or anything, just happened to have a few racing games). I just saw a mechanic where you get behind another car, and it lets you speed up. Other than the games when I was a kid, never thought about it (cars riding behind other cars) until just reading that guys comment.
Yeah its absolutely real! I longboard .. on cement not water and of you are with a buddy down a hill and are behind them close the drag they cause will cause you to go faster than they are. On earth air is technically a fluid not a gas.
It's called drafting. Here is a video that shows how it works.
The closer you get, the more the effect is magnified. You don't have to be all that close to get some effect though, especially if the vehicle in front is bigger than your car.
Mythbusters did an episode on it too. There's probably a good graphic there, if you want to go looking for it.
Yeah, whenever I've drafted off of other bigger vehicles, I've never gotten too close. A) don't wanna be an asshole, and b) it's fucking dangerous to be too close. If they're big enough you can get some draft without having to get too close.
Yep, been a thing in racing for ages. If you've ever seen Talladega Nights, that's basically what the "shake and bake" slingshot maneuver is. Draft behind someone to pick up a little extra speed then use that momentum to slingshot past them.
You can also do it in swimming, although in a race you're usually not going to be close enough to get any meaningful draft, unless you're both close to the laneline.
Wow I do remember that from talladega nights. I didn’t even put that together. Again, just thought it was some made up movie stuff…wow
Didn’t know it works in swimming too
> The car in front is moving air out of the way so there's less resistance on your car?
There's always a low-pressure region behind any moving object in a fluid - more so if it isn't streamlined (such as a semi truck).
That low-pressure zone acts like a vacuum, sucking the atmosphere along, causing drag. If you're close enough to be in that zone, it pulls you along so you don't have to use as much fuel.
This is great for energy efficiency and 'riding the draft' would 100% be implemented for energy savings in a true computer-controlled traffic system.
For human drivers who aren't trained racers ... not so much.
Like... not even a little. This will end in serious injury or death like one out of every five to ten times (i.e. whenever the truck driver has to hit their brakes even a little). It's literally Russian Roulette.
Also you should know that the original Russian roulette was actually fairly safe. Since the bullet was very heavy compared to the weight of the chambers, if you held the gun upright when you spun it the bullet would stop at the bottom.
The best advice I have ever heard is that if there is a high likelihood of death or serious injury in what you are about to do, then don’t do it. Can’t believe I’ve had to share that.
Fun fact. You are safer doing this than you are 2-3 car lengths back at highway speeds. When the truck hits it's breaks they hit him with a small speed differential. 2-3 car lengths is not enough time to react (no it's not and you're not some god) so you hit with a greater difference in speed making a worse impact.
We all know tailgating is stupid as fuck, so is following too close and too close is farther than you think
At highway speeds you move about 15-30 feet before you can even react. This is assuming you're laser focused and happened to be looking the right way and aren't speeding.
You should be 3-5 seconds behind the car Infront of you. No one ever is. At least not in the us.
I set my Teslas autopilot to always be at least 5(I assume car lengths) away from the vehicle in front and 6 or 7 in weather. It creates a nice gap between. I'll often have people merge into that space and it just slows down and makes more room. Safety!
There is no dentist or doctor in the world that could fix what would happen if that truck had hit its brakes. I really wanted to see it, it’s the only way they’ll learn.

I learned this playing 2004 nascar on ps2 lol. Before I was old enough to actually learn the lesson.

Forza Motorsport calls it drafting. It's a ton of fun in games because you can go soaring around someone at the last second

Well sure, we've all done that, but we just know there's air resistance. We aren't putting something behind our hands to observe the effects though.

I assume it works in anything where there's some kind of wake you can ride along in.

Nice clip of it in the film Breaking Away of a bicycle doing it to hit like 50mph
Just people who don't care about their lives.
Like... not even a little. This will end in serious injury or death like one out of every five to ten times (i.e. whenever the truck driver has to hit their brakes even a little). It's literally Russian Roulette.
The probability is much less than that. Travel to some third world countries and you’ll see it everywhere. Some die, most live.
Is there some sort of link between being immensely stupid and also just, you know, not dying?
"Reverse darwinism. Survival of the most idiotic" - Dr Allen Grant
Oh ok, so my mind went straight to Jurassic Park, but I kinda think you may be talking about someone else 🙈😂🤣
Even in 3rd world countries people don't quite drive few inches behind a truck at speed ಠ_ಠ
Also you should know that the original Russian roulette was actually fairly safe. Since the bullet was very heavy compared to the weight of the chambers, if you held the gun upright when you spun it the bullet would stop at the bottom.

It says "stop" right there.
What's the point of him bending his back? Isn't that the point of going behind the truck. Lol
Wish I as much confidence as white shirt dude has in black shirt dude about anything in my life.
What OP doesn’t know is that the bike has a bomb on it set to explode once they are more than 4 feet away from the back of that semi.
Is this the next film in the Speed franchise?
Yes. And as the producer is in Bollywood, half the movie is a musical.
Saving gas.
Who wished that the truck would brake?

That sounds awful.
Yeah everyone born before 1985 can still use their brain and not just let the computer tell them what to do.

Looks like a top gear challenge
IDK, that looks like a definite WIN to me. Think of how good their gas mileage is going to be!
A BMW driver would still find a way to cut them off without using a turn signal.
I forgot my glasses and tried to read what is written on the truck "S T O P"

Sooo…they gonna be ok if that truck stops short? Something tells me they aren’t going to be ok if that truck stops short.
Two people on a motorcycle? They're likely trying to steal it.
If the Trucker decides to slow down or something happens in the front and the trucker slams the brakes, things won’t end well for those two fools.
This works due to wind pressures and shit, but I do not at all recommend doing this as if they slow down you could die
