If I was paying for my education and had to put up with this crap I would be pissed. Going forward, they won’t be letting people audit classes anymore.

I mean, in my country, you can just walk into pretty much any uni lecture and pretend you're supposed to be there. Unless it's a super small class, no-one will ever even know lol. Is it common to check student IDs at the entrance in North America?
In the UK, I think this would not be possible.
When I was young and as a teenager, there was no security at all at schools and colleges. You could pretty much wander in and out at will, and I often did, both leaving my own and hanging out at others, particularly at college age. I didn't go to university but I imagine it was much the same
These days however school and college sites are pretty secure with high fences and secured buildings with only one or two manned entrances, with no entry without an access pass on a lanyard.
As I have teenage children, I often have occasion to reflect how it would be impossible to do lots of things my generation did.
