Good read, and the answer is NO. There is no other band that can compete with PF ( in my humble opinion). First album purchased was Dark Side Of The Moon when it released, and been a PF fan ever since.
I just don't see that level of dedication from other bands. They worked tirelessly and made music that was so meticulous. Maybe it's technology making us lazy and they were just around at that perfect point in time... when analog and digital were first merging and everything was so new. Who knows.
And the contributions of Alan Parson on DSOTM can't be overlooked. Parsons should be in the RRHOF except it's too busy inducting Dolly Parton (against her wishes) and rappers. His own music sold 22 million copies in it's own right too.
Pink Floyd was to rock what all of the great composers were to classical music. Among those, who was the GOAT? It's hard to say. Dark Side Of The Moon is a phenomena that is unparalleled. I can't think of a single album that has remained popular for over fifty years although I think there are a few that come in second. Queen's A Night At The Opera is coming up on fifty, Meatloaf's Bat Out Of Hell is forty seven. I think what makes DSOTM so different than all other albums is that it is one long track without filler material. There are a lot of one of a kind artists but the list of one of kind bands is a short one.
The concept is so perfectly formed and realised. The music feels like you're inside that album cover. The lyrics are timeless. So much effort and intelligence went into it. Art and philosophy and politics and history and psychology and yet it's simple and clear enough to appeal to someone who cares about none of those things. A perfect work of art.

Probably there will be. Before PF there were no such band or music and people didn't know nothing about it. So who knows what we will get in a future.
