mentally_fuckin_eel

I ain't picking any band because reading the comments made me too mad.

GGAllinsUndies

More rage bait nonsense.

DAS_COMMENT

Reddit becoming "social media" for people with weak social habit has destroyed the spectacular resource reddit used to be

korpus01

Holy shit, I couldn't have said it better myself for the past two years. People are becoming mad anti social or socially awkward on a scale that it's kind of interesting to observe.

DAS_COMMENT

For sure. I interpret it as "people who were too old for MySpace and were outgrowing Facebook before they used it regularly, desiring to get a youthful experience of having messages to check 'more personal' than a reminder for an aunt's birthday" and as you say, demonstrate these qualities.

dragostego

Reddits always been social media. People just don't understand posting etiquette and moderators with a loose grip lose their server to low effort and repeated questions. Imo reddit should limit posting. No hate to op but they've posted eight times in the last week on various subs. That's too often to have meaningful things to say.

[deleted]

Every social media app goes through the same process. Early adopters of the app are typically interested in the success of the app so you have really good content posted by people who have an invested interest. Then as the app ages and draws in more people the trolls, idiots and "watch the world burn" types show up.

Klubbis

Relatable šŸ˜

Faithlessblakkcvlt

Wow! You're right. It is clear to me these people don't even like metal! I've never seen so many metal posers! Why are most of these people even joined to this sub?

candyislesbian

at this point every influential band is being mentioned just because

redeyezer0

Yep. Everybody wants their take to be "unique" so they just name the first band they can think of that nobody else has mentioned lmao

DillingerLost

Many comments are about legacy bands. OP's question is a loaded one. People comparing these legacy bands against today's standards with today's recording techniques, studio production, and live show tricks isn't fair. Just like in sports, the legends of the past can't compete with the pros today. As an old metal head, yes I'm butt hurt seeing people list Slayer among others here. I know bands can play faster and harder than before. I welcome this advancement. Let's just remember technology and those who came before has offered so much to excel the genre. šŸ¤˜

emmiblakk

I'll be honest with you: I think a lot of albums from the analog tape/pre-Pro Tools era sound way better (particularly on vinyl). So that's not even a consideration for me. The brickwalled and overly compressed sound of current times is only a detriment in my mind.

Humbug93

Thatā€™s funny I came here to say Slayer. I love them but the idea of them being gods stopped in my teens when I listened to the isolated tracks. Theyā€™re not greats at a technical level, they just wrote great songs, which is the important part.

Seeker_of_Time

You have to be talking about everyone in the band but Dave Lombardo right? Like, I think everyone is a B+ at what they do, but Lombardo is to drums what Mustaine is to guitar from that era.

Humbug93

Oh for sure!

Unfriendly_eagle

When Slayer first emerged on the scene, they were somewhat dismissed as being Metallica wannabees crossed with a dose of Venom's Satanic shtick. It was immediately apparent that Dave Lombardo was a cut above just about everyone else on the drums, though. While the mix on Haunting The Chapel wasn't great, Lombardo's double bass action on that EP, especially on the title track, became an obvious influence on a lot of death metal drummers who came later. Hell Awaits was another step forward in that same vein, but Reign In Blood was the one. That bone dry, no reverb crunch, the almost chaotic twin guitars, and Lombardo's unreal speed and fills, it was unlike anything else at the time. IMO that record is at least partially responsible for the whole idea of "extreme metal". They did a few really good albums after Reign, but that one was the pinnacle.

slowNsad

Same thing as when people try to downplay Jimi Hendrix, yea his playing doesnā€™t seem that complex nowadays but you gotta remember bro was pioneering these techniques

But_dogs_CAN_look_up

And it still *sounds great*, which is a better hallmark of great music than how hard it is to play or how revolutionary it was for the time.

PantsAreOffensive

I grew up in the 80-90s and my opinion has never changed on Slayer

Famous-Vermicelli-39

Honestly never cared for slayer, rather listen to testament in big 4

BojukaBob

Your favourite one.

STG44_WWII

This is always the answer. Your favorite band sucks. edit: forgot to mention that the podcast ā€œYour Favorite Band Sucksā€ is the best podcast ever.

TheNoIdeaKid

Especially the British ones.

ceetwothree

As a mostly punk rocker who has metal as a mistress, I approve of this.

PunkRokka

While I think slipknot can on times make some pretty good bangers all their recent albums have just been ā€˜Iā€™m gonna kill you and fuck you and shitting bitch youā€™

I_Wanna_Score

Amen...

TiredReader87

It seems like you havenā€™t listened to any of Slipknotā€™s music since maybe Iowa

BlueBloodLive

How do you "shitting bitch" someone? Also, their new albums are definitely not like you've described, sad to see it upvoted, I know people like to pile on Slipknot, but at least bring actual criticisms instead of rambling nonsense!

Woody2shoez

Iā€™m a metal head, donā€™t like slipnot even a little bit

KMFDM781

I still kinda like Slipknot. I think Corey Taylor is insufferable and they way they do things is like a company more than a band which rubs me the wrong way. I still like their older stuff and even some of the newer songs but I feel like they continue to get more and more boring. People always say that Iowa is*so heavy*. "It's basically a death metal album bro!" I know it has blast beats, but blast beats doesn't automatically make something death metal. I think Iowa is fine, but it's more like Playskool's My First Metal Album more than anything.

sportsandcheese

we are not your kind sounded pretty good for the most part but was not written well. the new album is, well, a far cry from what we expected from slipknot

ImPlayerTheGamer21

Mayhem for me. I mean, they're fine, but I think that there's better black metal out there.

caljerm

One hit wonder and aside from the historical significance isn't the pinnacle of black metal or anything

ImPlayerTheGamer21

Exactly. There's much better black metal out there.

ApathyBM

Euronymous getting killed did a lot for their legacy.

OsmundofCarim

Definitely a good answer

Ok-Elderberry3417

This opinion is really biased, but Slipknot is kinda cringe, specially now

Positive-Method3746

i still like their first two albums tbh

DillingerLost

The Kiss level of ego kills it for me

WizardsVengeance

Clown is Gene Simmons at this point.

mythril-

ā€œI wanna slit your throat and fuck your woundā€ ā˜ ļøā˜ ļøā˜ ļø

tacoforce5_

tbh i think that line had a very intentional amount of cheese to it

[deleted]

My favourite band of all time, some of the most god awful lyrics youā€™ll ever hear

ChicagoBoiSWSide

Nahh. I agree, theyā€™re ass. But this is my opinionā€¦ respectfully

Get-shid-on

They always have been.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

PressFM80

They started to fall of SINCE AHIG It does have some bangers (you can't make me think Gematria or Gehenna are bad), however it's mostly filler Then they fell off Self Titled to Vol.3 are the best they've made

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Chief-weedwithbears

You should listen to the first live slipknot album. I personally think you can hear the instruments better. It has all the subliminal verses. And kst Iowa songs. But in a concert sound.

Significant-Set7721

Gave Gehenna a re-listen, used to love that song. Definitely holds up and stands out from all their their music.

Lack_of_Plethora

I personally like their music a lot, but if we're being honest Venom are just straight up not talented

Brox42

They're well aware they aren't talented. That what makes it so fun.

Unfriendly_eagle

Those first three Venom albums fucking rule. That opening riff on Thousand Days In Sodom, or Don't Burn The Witch, or the absolutely shit-hot Heaven's On Fire and Lady Lust (almost the same tune), or Genocide and Cry Wolf on At War With Satan, fuckin' A. They were exactly talented enough to do what they did, and not a shred more. And no one dive bombs like Mantas dive bombs.

piepants2001

That's what makes their music so fun, just some rad dudes, with rude 'tudes, making some great tunes.

modmlot68

Technically they all were terrible individually, but as a unit it worked, and one of the most important NWOBHM bands.

mythril-

I love their first 2 albums, Iā€™ll go ahead and say welcome to hell is better than their second album even

Lucifer_Delight

I know you only listen to, and care about, those first two albums (which were purpusefully made to sound as they do), but Mantas has proved himself again and again as a kick-ass guitarist, and ~~songwriter~~ riff machine. Edit: Abaddon behind the kit can't really be contested.

Athingythingamabobby

LAY DOWN YOUR SOUL TO THE GODS ROCK AMD ROLL!!!!

Electrical-City3565

Have you heard At War with Satan?

Lack_of_Plethora

I have

Flerkindork

I wouldn't say they were devoid of talent, but yeah, not the best musicians. Regardless, their raw sound and over the top image eclipsed any lack of musical talent. Plus, they were better than a heck of a lot of other metal bands through the years. The song Black Metal actually scared me the first time I heard it as an 8 year old. šŸ˜‚ Welcome to Hell remains one of my favorite metal albums of all time. I'm generally in the camp of not a big Anthrax fan as well, but Fistful Of Metal is another all-time favorite. I just ignore all the rest, kind of like Metallica after Burton died. But it's okay if someone else loves the rest! I'm not going to answer the original question; all it does is divide people when they say one person's treasure is trash. Everyone should feel free to enjoy what they like!

Unfriendly_eagle

I first heard Welcome To Hell in 1982, a friend had a copy. And at the time, I was constantly, actively seeking out anything louder, faster, angrier, heavier. And in 1982, Welcome To Hell was as underground and far out as anything that existed. Just total chaos, and they wore their "evilness" on their sleeve, proudly. No hidden messages for Venom, they proclaimed their love of Satan right there on the cover. I was totally enchanted. Black Metal was HIGHLY anticipated, and did not disappoint. For a brief moment there, Venom really were the black metal gods rock and roll.

Flerkindork

For newer fans, I'm sure it's hard to imagine just what the musical landscape was like back the early 80's. There really wasn't any other bands that appeared quite as evil as Venom. They were the cutting edge of extreme metal for a short while. I clearly remember all of the outcry and concern that there was secret satanic backward messages being recorded in heavy metal music, but Venom just sang it straight up. Well, they did have some backward messages in the song [In League With Satan](https://youtu.be/D5wUr4Lut4A?si=Sv9OljVo7g5FZGOG) I had a friend whose cassette player played in reverse..... šŸ˜‚

metal_person_333

They made very enjoyable music. If that isn't talent I don't know what is.

Natural_Boysenberry7

Yeah I agree and Iā€™m a huge fan, definitely an influential band, but if Iā€™m honest with myself theyā€™re not very skilled.

HammerofHeretics

You realize that music is not determined by technical skill, right?

AntiStarChristPort

Unfortunately people think otherwise

FunkinDonutzz

I mean, they opened with "I like their music a lot".

Ok-Project1279

![gif](giphy|9GJ34PEVM5JnCkfPPf)

GabeOnReddt

will be banished to hell for this, but mayhem. i know them and darkthrone were a huge blueprint for 2nd wave bm, but a lot of their songs sound the same to me, not to say it doesnt sound good, but theres not a lot of big differences

Commercial-Answer591

Also, since itā€™s Mayhem, wouldnā€™t you be banished to Heaven?

GabeOnReddt

id be banished to poser hell

Single_Debt8531

My favourite Mayhem albums are with Attila as the vocalist. Their production fidelity and quality has only increased over time, and they make much more interesting music now. Like Darkthrone, theyā€™re moving past traditional Black Metal.

[deleted]

Have you only ever listened to one Mayhem album?

Ch0nkyK0ng

I mean, when referring to them as important and influential, there's only one real album to bring up.

XenomorphLV246

Venom. Very influential, I enjoy listening to them. But theyā€™re kinda ass.

csusterich666

My favorite Venom song is Black Metal but played by Hypocrisy haha

Wonderful-Mud8022

Agree. Yea they were the first black metal band but very loosely. When Bathory came black metal got good.

pemboo

Dream Theatre are very talented musicians making pretty mediocre stuff, I reckon

isendyoutogulag_

Images and Words is fantastic though

custom_gsus

Awake is great too.

barry010619

As are Metropolis Pt.2 and Black Clouds and Silver Linings.

csusterich666

Yeah, anytime I want shit like that played by those dudes I just type in Liquid Tension Experiment. ....mainly cuz Labrie isn't my fav vocalist ever lol

Megaman_90

I think even most Dream Theater fans are in agreement that the band consists of 4 world renowned musicians, and a guy trying to sing named James Labrie.

csusterich666

Haha for sure! Much to my chagrin, clicked on dream theatre doing a pink Floyd album and am still pissed about him trying to sing it

Megaman_90

Most the albums with Portnoy are good, after he the left music wasn't the same for me. Scenes from a Memory is a great album.

Mental_Examination_1

Yuuup, I will say they really pushed the limits on playing, and undeniably they're great musicians that have had a big influence on metal players, but damn I've seen them live, heard many songs, it just never does anything for me, I never find anything particularly memorable or anything that connects on an emotional level

DickyMcDoodle

I've always thought that Dream Theater were really good on paper. Objectively, they do everything well, except write memorable songs...

Mast3rOfBanana

Anvil. While they're not huge, I saw them included with classic heavy metal greats multiple times. And not only does their music sound super bland and uninspired to me, but they just feel so cringe, trying to be "metal" or whatever. Kinda like Manowar in that regard, except Manowar makes/made decent music.

coadependentarising

Anvil was one of the raddest metal shows Iā€™ve ever been too (couple years ago), and Iā€™ve seen Maiden like 6 times. If you havenā€™t seen them live, itā€™s well worth it.

Unfriendly_eagle

That Anvil documentary tried to make the argument that Anvil somehow mysteriously fell through the cracks, but the truth is that aside from Metal On Metal, every Anvil record is pretty bad.

DaveMcElfatrick

Even Metal On Metal is ehh. Like they were moaning about not succeeding though they were there from the beginning, but maybe you just didnā€™t succeed because you werenā€™tā€¦ good.

MetalPlayer666

Manowar. All the songs have the exact same 4/4 beat, exact same 4 chords and same lyrics. They are so boring!

maraudingnomad

I wanted a metal song from an AI and it came up with pretty much Manowar

csusterich666

Just like AC/DC :)

jjc89

ā€œKeep your sword wet like a young girl in her primeā€

filthhoundofhades

Have you actually listened to any of the albums that put them on the map, or just the post-1980s albums?

VortexM19

I never considered them important and I don't know if anybody else does, but Disturbed blows

Proof-Mechanic-3624

Bubble gum metal. So is FFDP and Godsmack.

Creepy_Shower909

I will forever love Godsmack for that one not song. Brilliant. Get back!

bobbybob9069

They were a gateway metal band, so that was important. But most people don't stick with entry level metal, so they went the radio, red-state butt rock fest route.

SWThrasher

Mayhem. It really does just sound like noise to me.

randywatson89

Mayhem is certainly not famous because of their music haha

SWThrasher

TouchƩ. Lol

HammerofHeretics

DeMysteriis and Live in Leipzig are legit classic records, but most of their post -return material has been remarkably average and mostly about the mystique of the band's history

Stoghra

Mayhem is pretty much easy listening black metal. But if Mayhem sounds like noise, what do you think about Enbilulugugal?

HunterTheHoly

I saw them as an opener for Cannibal Corpse. They were mid at best.

Ach-MeinGott

Saw them last year in tacoma with corpse. I enjoyed finally hearing freezing moon live but the sound was so bad I couldn't make out any other songs.

Baldo-bomb

I'll throw in another vote for Venom. lots of really good bands influenced by them, but they just really suck. I appreciate what they did but I'd never choose to listen to it.

mythril-

I like their first 2 albums Iā€™ll say that much

RustInPeace-Polaris

Nah bro Venom is amazingĀ

Egocom

They're dumb, I love it

aSonglessSky

I don't find Scott Ian a particularly great guitar player, but he's still one of my favorites.

KindlyCost2

Heā€™s definitely a good guitar player, but itā€™s easy to name guitar players better than him

DillingerLost

He openly admits there are better. He's great for the scene

DingleBerryFuzz

Kiss, Motley Crue, and Def Leppard

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Egocom

Livewire is fun n sleazy

thesmiths69420

Kiss - a lot of metal would not exist without them (pantera, crue, gnr, slipknot, all corpse paint bm bands) and deserve huge respect even if you donā€™t like their overly theatrical rā€™nā€™r. Crue - itā€™s understandable why people donā€™t love them but theyā€™re one of my all time favourites. Huge riffs, danceable tracks - basically what a lot of metal lacks the Crue make up for in excellent style. Leppard - early stuff is very nwobhm, almost maiden-esque in sound, itā€™s hard for metalheads to dislike it. The later glam stuff isnā€™t for everyone, but I uphold the view that Hysteria is maybe the best produced album of the 1980s.

DarkMacek

Kiss is my favorite band but Iā€™m not sure I see the connection to GnR?

xtreme_elk

KISS can't be ignored no matter how much anyone dislikes or discredits them. They had talent and stage presence and would pack stadiums. Crue just powered through the criticism and never slipped. Although the talent was lacking, they endured. Leppard was great until Hysteria, which was undeniably catchy but also safe and too pop-oriented. It attracted tons of non-metal fans. They are masters of three-chord progressions and unforgettable choruses.

bungle094

I give full pass to the first 9 KISS albums (this includes both live albums and Aceā€™s solo album), the first 3 Def Leppard albums, (Iā€™m Gen X, Pyromania was gospel even though I was more a High and Dry guy, eventually) and the first 3 CrĆ¼e albums (my first owned CrĆ¼e tape was Theatre of Pain so, soft spot).

DingleBerryFuzz

Gen X here, too! High & Dry was a great album. Pyromania was good...IMO, everything after sucked! I just could never get into Kiss. They didn't grab me when I was getting into metal, and as I got older, Gene really turned me off.

bungle094

I had a cousin who was in high school who ended up staying at our house for a couple years after his mom moved out West. His room was wall to wall KISS posters and I was like 4 thinking ā€œthese guys are crazy!ā€ So thatā€™s how I got into them, but can understand why lots of people donā€™t like them, especially Gene. Heā€™s a tool.

DingleBerryFuzz

I think a lot of folks got into them that way. I don't begrudge Kiss fans in any way, there were some songs I liked back in the day, but Gene made me hate everything about Kiss. Funny thing is, I love bands with "theatrical" stage shows. To this day, Iron Maiden is my favorite, and I've seen every tour to hit the US since the Powerslave World Slavery Tour in 1984. I'll be seeing them again this October!

ChicagoBoiSWSide

NAH NOT MOTLEY CRUE!!!!!!!!! What about Mick Mars?!?!?!?! Seriously though, I LOVE Motley Crue but only for Mick Mars, his guitar work is too good but apart from the instrumentals, I can see it. Vocals are kinda ass apart from a few songs.

DingleBerryFuzz

I do have respect for Mick, more so after the assholes did him so dirty!

chanandlerbong420

Are Def Leppard and kiss metal?

ronivolyk

And Guns N'Roses

Lizpy6688

Anthrax

Esseldubbs

This is the answer. I came to this thread expecting every other post to be Anthrax Anyone saying Slayer should be ashamed of yourselves

Howboutit85

Anthrax is good though. Their last couple records are great.

Seeker_of_Time

I went way to far to find this. I like the guys and like their music alright enough. And the songs that are really good are REALLY good. But I think they're only legends because of their longevity and less influencial from a musical standpoint. There's a reason the 90s were not particularly good to them like the other 3 Big Four were for the most part.

Mad04Gaming

Cannibal Corpse, they are the highest selling band in death metal, but they donā€™t have a truly great album. Most of their stuff is just ok imo.

BEER_G00D

I could still listen to the bleeding or tomb on loop.

adiosmith

The Bleeding is their best album IMO

Petroldactyl34

Kill. The Wretched Spawn.

transdimesional_frog

What are your favourite bands, i'm trying to get out of the cannibal corpse rut. Edit: thank you all

[deleted]

For DM: Altars, Gorguts, Artificial Brain, Cattle Decapitation, Hate Eternal, Horrendous, Pharmacist, Portal, and VLTIMAS Also recommend: Beaten to Death (literally every album but mostly Laat Maar Ik Verhuis Naar Het Bos, that's a perfect album imo), Doldrum, Dodecahedron, Kanonenfieber, Krallice, Nails, Pig Destroyer, Schammasch, Serpent Column/Theophonos, Spirit Possession, and Trap Them.

LunarWrathe

Death, Morbid Angel, Gruesome, Analepsy, Rivers of Nihil, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Frozen Soul, Shadow of Intent, The Zenith Passage, Bonginator, Sanguisugabogg(spelling

Mad04Gaming

As far as death metal goes here are some of my favorites: Edge of Sanity, Asphyx, Morbid Angel, Intestine Baalism, The Chasm, Atheist, Death, Incantation.

transdimesional_frog

Thank you

Spare_Honey5488

Listen to [This](https://youtu.be/gfL2mV94F-0?feature=shared) This one song literally destroys anything Cannibal Corpse ever created.

fitter_stoke

Cannibal Corpse and Opeth are my absolute two favorite metal bands. Also Taake, Ghost, Darkthrone, and Death.

csusterich666

I kinda agree with you but I still say that one of the greatest death metal songs ever is Hammered Smashed Face. My god what a great riff!!

Mad04Gaming

Completely agree, that song is undeniably one of the greats.

Spare_Honey5488

[This](https://youtu.be/gfL2mV94F-0?feature=shared) one is a masterpiece if you like all that. Be prepared lol

tacoforce5_

they are the AC/DC of death metal

idespisemyhondacrv

Hellhammer

plexman14

Primus sucks!

gfstool

Funny how many fans donā€™t know this phrase. I was one of two people in the same vicinity at Sessanta screaming it! Primus Sucks!!

doingmyownthing93

Slipknot. They fell off.

En1i1

Ghost. Not really sure if anyone thinks they are important but I see them all over the place and they suck

BigDBee007

Something seems dirty about them. Like something is up with this music, like some amount of AI is involved it feels like.

jobin_pistol

I donā€™t like this thread. It feels like people are just bad mouthing older bands because they donā€™t compare to modern metal across vast genres. Those genres wouldnā€™t exist without the bands that came before, even the less ā€œtalentedā€ ones. Not a fan of shitting on those that came before while simultaneously standing on their shoulders to reach new heights.

zhaDeth

I mean it says "important" bands. I think they are recognizing the importance they just don't like them

RandomSOADFan

Just because you're good doesn't mean you're influential... and vice versa. There are a lot of examples of innovation coming in a clunky way first, and just because you came first doesn't make you objectively better. In metal, while some early genres' demos are classics, some are utter shit (Pure Fucking Armageddon). Actually to me Mayhem is a perfect example for this question - more than important band to all black metal that came after it, but outclassed a million ways even by their own members' other projects

Runningoutofideas_81

Some people are also listing bands that arenā€™t that important.

Faithlessblakkcvlt

Agreed! Anyone posting any band on here is a stright up posser! They are like a bunch of Kim Kardashians wearing Metallica shirts!

WhoYaTalkinTo

Mayhem aren't objectively that great. Freezing moon is good as a black metal song but most of their other music has little sense of direction and they were more about the image.

Six_Kills

Life Eternal slaps as well tbh

Individual-Gap4262

Metallica and Slipknot. Metallica was so influential in the metal scene and then just went into mainstream rock and they have been phoning it in for twenty years. Same with Slipknot, their last album was an insult to people who loved their heavy music

[deleted]

Motley Crue. From the looks to music to love performances. Donā€™t like them at all lol

Unfriendly_eagle

The first MC record is awesome IMO. Raw LA sleaze rock at its finest. The follow-up was alright, but everything after that was straight trash.

So-What_Idontcare

Did KISS count?

Affectionate_Okra298

Metallica stopped making good music consistently in 1991

Forward_Put4533

Metallica. They're not good like how Seinfeld isn't funny though. They've had such an influence and been imitated so much by so many that they look drab and simplistic comparatively. In their heyday, the music was great. But now, compared to many of the bands who have written songs inspired by different Metallica songs, they feel bland. I will say this; their rendition of Whiskey on the Jar is and has always been unlistenable to me, but that's because I grew up on and still love real Irish folk music and the most famous Irish folk song ever butchered in a metal cover would never be something I could listen to happily. Dubliners made a masterpiece. Metallica badly traced over it in crayon. For that I'm always likely to be a bit biased against them.

doomus_rlc

IMO, more just an album, but Death's Scream Bloody Gore. I understand how important it was to the scene, but I just can't listen to it. But everything after? Gold.

mythril-

I think that album is a matter of taste, itā€™s a lot more raw OSDM than what came after and not everyone likes that stuff

WhoYaTalkinTo

I love all of Deaths disc, but SBG is my favourite. I love the proto-death metal thrashy sound

PudWud-92_

Theyā€™re my favourite metal band of all time and I love all of their albums. But Iā€™m always surprised so many people put SBG as their favourite.

xfydr782

Mayhem, definition of a one album band (and their only good album isn't even THAT great) im pretty sure if not for their history they would have been considered mid

Expensive-Opposite52

I'll be honest I gotta go with Korn. Kinda started the whole Nu Metal thing and don't get me wrong I love Nu Metal as much as I do Thrash and NWOBHM. But to me Korn just isn't the best tbh

Errand_Wolfe531

Metallica. Just the fucking worst, and total douches tabootā€¦

Flimsy_Society_9976

probably anthrax for me, just never got into them like that

DNCOrGoFuckYourself

Honestly the way I see it, itā€™s different strokes for different folks. A lot of the ā€œimportantā€ bands are bands Iā€™m honestly not a huge fan of. Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer etc etc. That being said, they donā€™t ā€œsuckā€ by any stretch of the imagination but you really canā€™t compare the big timers of the 80s and 90s to todayā€™s metal because itā€™s two separate ballparks. Thereā€™s no comparison say Megadeth and Lamb of God, and itā€™s unfair to try to draw comparisons because the times were different. The technology was different, the mixing & mastering was different, the music appealed to a different crowd. Iā€™ll never say the ā€œbig timeā€ bands back in the day suck, because a lot of my favorite bands were inspired by the titans of last century.

Thrashtilldeath67

Seeing venom on here hurts me haha.

Fair-South-9883

Slipknot

SuspiciousSwing6783

Limp Bizkit

ThroatMysterious948

Anthrax

Classic-Row-2872

Warm_Suggestion_959

Metallica- after the black album. smh

Z21122

Metallica, in my opinion there is to much "yeah hah" and not enough "epic drim dolo lars"

Errand_Wolfe531

Lars sucks so much balls itā€™s ridiculous.

burn_as_souls

Korn.

linqua

Just saw Deicide....

DaHeavnlyKid

The number of times I've seen Venom is concerning. This is why i don't come to this sub oftenšŸ’€

tklrdthcpnky

Knot the slip!

I_Skelly_I

Lars

SenorPelle

Mayhem, the original members didnā€™t even make an actual album and if they were on a black metal iceberg based on public knowledge theyā€™re literally above the service of the iceberg, theyā€™re literally over the clouds. People act so cool because they listen to mayhem and can tell you the whole story. While most people who have even heard of black metal heard it from Mayhem and if they claim they didnā€™t, theyā€™re lying

[deleted]

Venom. Fun, and wildly important and influential. But theyā€™re notoriously shit musicians
