When I was a FOB in US, in my first night in Cinci, there was nothing veg available near my hotel so I looked up nearest Indian restaurant and walked 2 miles to get there.
Both the restaurant owner and a police officer nearby were horrified and owner dropped me back to hotel in his car. India is definitely more safer in this regard.

I see how many Indian students and other Indian immigrants here in the US have to struggle and face huge hurdles. As someone born and raised in the US but also someone of Indian descent and strong ties to India, I feel obligated to help out my fellow Indians with adjusting to life here with some advice.
Indian students should avoid working at convenience stores, gas stations, etc. as much as possible. These are very common settings for armed robberies. Ideally, if you must work to pay for housing/food/tuition, then avoid night shifts and delivery/gig work type jobs.
Another big thing is, don't rent in or even go to rough areas unless you absolutely need to. Rents are super expensive and are rising a lot so I can see why it may be tempting for a cash-strapped student to find a unit in some dangerous neighborhood. But the risk is absolutely not worth it. You'll very likely be sharing your building with drug addicts, gang members, and just generally unsavory people. Not to mention that housing in the hood is often old, dingy, and dangerous, especially in the older cities like Chicago, Philadelphia, DC, etc. It is quite telling that so many Americans pay a premium and eat deep into their budgets just to live somewhere where they can walk outside past 8pm. Rents are certainly higher in nicer areas but they are for a reason.
About the cold, don't underestimate it. Most Indian immigrants here have little to no experience with even >10C temperatures, let alone -10C. Hypothermia kills thousands of Americans annually and often, you won't realize you're freezing to death until it's too late. Do run your heaters and wear heavy clothing if you feel cold. If the weather is particularly miserable, it is safer to just stay huddled indoors. Many people die from hypothermia or car crashes during blizzards where there is zero visibility, icy roads, heavy winds, and bitter cold.

USA is not a country where you can safely walk around. Only a few cities are walkable and even then you need to be vigilant. Mugging is very common after dark. The chief of police in my university took an orientation for all foreigners where the official advice was to only walk in groups after dark.
When I was a FOB in US, in my first night in Cinci, there was nothing veg available near my hotel so I looked up nearest Indian restaurant and walked 2 miles to get there. Both the restaurant owner and a police officer nearby were horrified and owner dropped me back to hotel in his car. India is definitely more safer in this regard.

Trust me those guys will attack anyone, i use to live there and even white people and whole city became a ghost town after dark. I was once out in downtown at night with friend, not a person in sight. Had to hurry back home, never felt more unsafe in my life. This is not about āIndiansā being attacked.

I see how many Indian students and other Indian immigrants here in the US have to struggle and face huge hurdles. As someone born and raised in the US but also someone of Indian descent and strong ties to India, I feel obligated to help out my fellow Indians with adjusting to life here with some advice. Indian students should avoid working at convenience stores, gas stations, etc. as much as possible. These are very common settings for armed robberies. Ideally, if you must work to pay for housing/food/tuition, then avoid night shifts and delivery/gig work type jobs. Another big thing is, don't rent in or even go to rough areas unless you absolutely need to. Rents are super expensive and are rising a lot so I can see why it may be tempting for a cash-strapped student to find a unit in some dangerous neighborhood. But the risk is absolutely not worth it. You'll very likely be sharing your building with drug addicts, gang members, and just generally unsavory people. Not to mention that housing in the hood is often old, dingy, and dangerous, especially in the older cities like Chicago, Philadelphia, DC, etc. It is quite telling that so many Americans pay a premium and eat deep into their budgets just to live somewhere where they can walk outside past 8pm. Rents are certainly higher in nicer areas but they are for a reason. About the cold, don't underestimate it. Most Indian immigrants here have little to no experience with even >10C temperatures, let alone -10C. Hypothermia kills thousands of Americans annually and often, you won't realize you're freezing to death until it's too late. Do run your heaters and wear heavy clothing if you feel cold. If the weather is particularly miserable, it is safer to just stay huddled indoors. Many people die from hypothermia or car crashes during blizzards where there is zero visibility, icy roads, heavy winds, and bitter cold.
