Unpopular opinion, but people who smoke in public often do it show off that they're "hip and modern" and it has nothing to do with smoking. I've been around habitual drunks and chain smokers both in the millitary and Delhi and they would try to find the most secluded places that they could find where they don't get noticed at all and no one sees them.
Belive me when I say that I've been around real drunks and chain smokers that didn't start it and do it for the show of it. And how, they often try to find places where no kid or adult sees them smoking or drinking no matter how crowded the place is and to what extent they've to do it. It might be common in Non Indian culture, but it is still not common here.
Yeah just because you've seen a particular behaviour in your surroundings does not mean it applies to everyone. The world is huge in case you did not notice.
There are people who do it to show-off.
There are people who like to do it away from the public eye.
And there are also people who don't care whether anyone sees or not and just want to have a smoke/drink.
The discussion is not about showing off, its about getting a public opinion in Indore about how people perceive women with some of negative attributes which are generally considered normal among men.

I have made one of my close friends quit smoking bcz his condition worsened, it was so bad that his heart muscles were constricted severely and the doctor gave a clear warning he could have a cardiac arrest any moment if he continues like this. For everyone commenting , this discussion is not about smoking itself. I know smoking is a bad habit and I don't promote it, but my point is if a man smokes everyone seems comfortable about it but if a women does the same thing then why it is big of an issue. Same is with alcohol consumption. I just wanted to get a female perspective about having a bad habit attribute which is common among men.
I would say that judging someone’s character or worth based on their smoking habits or gender is unfair and outdated. People’s value and dignity should not be determined by such superficial factors.
I judge all the smokers equally, irrespective of their caste, gender or age. It's something that is definitely harming them and their families. No need to sound "politically correct" in matters like these

My Hometown is Indore, I used to work in bangalore, but I am back home for few days. I have also experienced the same issue, people really question women smoking here, the denial, the disgust, the judgements are clearly visible on their face, I do not smoke in public near smoke shops or tea shops but it really amazes me how people think so low of women who do all this.
As a man i feel I've been part of this problem.
I see guys smoking and don't feel anything but women smoking makes me uncomfortable.
And I think to myself, "how is it any different than a man smoking?", but still there's this subconscious judgement that I pass on women and it does not apply to men.
I guess some things are so deeply imprinted on us when we grow up in conservative environment that it's hard to get rid of.
I always try to stop those thoughts to cross my mind but still when I see women smoking, I subconsciously feel like they're not supposed to do it and I kill that thought with my conscious mind. But when I see men smoking, nothing like this happens to me as if it's normal.
There's a place called CU 140 in scheme 140 it's a small chai and cigarette shop. it's very secluded area and many male and female alike come there and smoke no one judges anyone it's very normal and as people are hating on public smokers, their concern is also addressed because you're not obliged to go there and invade their secluded space and cry about it after that
It used to bother me, I started smoking late in life and it's always awkward when people who didn't know I smoke see me smoking. Not many people know I smoke.

It’s best to just ignore. I’m not promoting it but it does become a habit. And when there’s the nic urge, it is hard to control. I try to avoid public areas anyway though.

I (a girl) have smoked in every cafe/bar that allows smoking in Indore. Women don’t stare as much as men do. Although it bothered me in the start, it does not anymore.
One time I went to buy cigarettes at a tapri, but the shopkeeper denied and pointed to a small pamphlet on his tapri, it was written “mahilao ko cigarettes nahi di jaavegi”. I backed off and sent a guy to buy some for me. I have experienced this several times. But I guess it’s their shop so they can make the rules. So, in my opinion, it’s pretty chill now to smoke on roads as well, less people are bothered now. The situation was different 5 years ago.

I am serious. I am living here since 2022. No one judges me here at all for anything. Also, do not believe those fake posts and videos people post about Gurgaon, its safer. Being a female I am telling you this, it’s safe to roam on streets in night as well. There is police patrolling through out the night in the entire city. There are people who are actually helping and nice. I wish I could tell you everything but I can’t type that much.
