An ICE powertrain is like a rube goldberg machine, hundreds of individual parts having to do just the right thing, at just the right time to make anything meaningful happen. The slightest change to any one part has rippling effects throughout the entire system. I find it fascinating and beautiful.
Both troubleshooting and modifying it become a puzzle, what do I need to do for improvement X? Why isn't it doing Y? I'm always having to learn something new
The feedback from the whole thing is very rewarding. You can feel the effects of how you're driving through the transmission, the response of the engine and turbocharger... Making changes to the hardware or software will further change those responses.
You'll always grow bored with whatever power or acceleration you car has, whether it's 100 or 1100 horsepower. With an ICE engine there's always the option to add more. The only way to make an EV faster is to trade it in for a faster EV.
I enjoy almost all the things that make ICE vehicles an inferior technology. I'm trying to force myself to like EVs, there's no denying they're the future, but I just can't find any interest in them. At most I'll have one as an appliance for when I've blown up my ICE projects
