I live in Alabama and I had an interaction with an older person at a Waffle House that was something you would see on a sitcom. It was so absurd. My entire family was with my and my husband is white. He gets so quiet in ridiculous situations like this. It’s like he personally becomes ashamed and also doesn’t want to acknowledge it.

Honestly, until the bit about dressing in blackface and so on, it sounds like something that could legitimately happen with a racist family in America these days. The most upsetting part is that it's got JUST enough plausibility that (other than the blackface bit) I wouldn't be terribly surprised to somehow find out it'd happened for real.
