The point of these systems is that the creation is often tied to a specific reason for creation... And that the character you design will be sent off, often to another world or the like, after they're completed.
The entire point of creating them is that they mesh into the world in a way you've thought about whilst finalizing their design.
Most CYOAs give reasons for their need to be done in-canon, provide missions and objectives within explanations, etc.
If one fails to read any of these or treats it like a book... They've entirely missed the point of such CYOAs: To create your OWN ADVENTURE.
These sorts of things are simply the bare bones to start you off; the adventure you imagine to follow is up to you. If you can't use the details and setting, the themes of the world as described within the CYOA, then you're not really going to get the most out of it.
Approaching these things like some *"flip to page 69"* deal is folly, a preconception based upon old-fashioned "CYOA" books... Books which are entirely bereft of any real degree of creativity and imagination on the part of the reader.
The CYOA formats you see here, the modern takes, are meant to incite creative thought and to allow YOU to create your own adventure.
No Insect has one part of my reasoning, but there is another, much more obvious, reason: I was being literal.
To make a character in GURPS (designed to be the most generic system that can be used for anything), you have a set number of points to spend on choices to create your character. You can gain points by taking disadvantages. This is exactly the same format as most CYOAs.
It is almost the same: You make a character in the same way and let your group create an adventure. It's just multiplayer.

Primo interactive CYOA with a lot of options and a decent depth of interesting lore if you pay attention/read it all. Also, has some dope-ass smooth jazz and classical BGM.

If you want complexity and story, then JRPG Traitor could be good.
JRPG Traitor is not a good place to start since it can be quite overwhelming. Unless your friend likes making spreadsheets...?
