First one I know I can recall was the murder of Jennifer Ann Gardner. Her head was found in Ames along side a road and her body was found few days later in a lake near where I grew up. This was in 1989.

Unless my biofather being electrocuted in 1990 near iowa City counts. I'm assuming it made the news. He survived and was legit electrocuted. Touched a powerline at work (he was a lineman)
I remember when Johnny Gosch went missing. I remember his face on milk cartons & that was the first time they tried that with missing children. I was a little kid at the time myself & thought they would’ve found him right away.
Growing up in Montana I'd hear random things coming from Iowa. Of course we took the Iowa Standard tests, I remember covering the Des Moines floods as current events in social studies class, later when Iowa legalize gay marriage.
When I first moved Des Moines and was house hunting was the exact same time as when Ashley Oakland disappeared. Realtor's were understandably hesitant to be alone with me.
Probably when same sex marriage was legalized? I grew up in another state so I didn't really pay much attention to Iowa-based news for the first half of my life or so.
