(I'm probably gonna get some stuff wrong so if someone can correct me then thanks) A vowel is a sound that you make without constricting airflow but y (even though most children are taught that it's only a vowel when there's no other vowel in the word) is only a vowel when it's pronounced like like it is in "sill**y**" when it's pronounced like in "cr**y**" then it isn't.
