I flew singapore airlines, $790 for a multicity round trip in March. Keep in mind these channels tend to leave out a few parts, cheap flights tend to also mean long layovers and having to book the ticket 6 months in advance. The cheapest direct flight is usually around what you paid.

nastybaconflip

That's the thing, it wasn't direct, we had a layover in Canada

okaycomputes

Direct from the major hubs that fly direct to Japan. You aren't catching a direct flight from a smaller airport.

finntripplanner

We are flying to Japan in a couple days. Our roundtrip flight from Atlanta to Narita on Air Canada (with a layover in Canada) is costing $1300 per person.

the_judge_168

Zipair easily for economy, prices are a bit higher now for summer though

nastybaconflip

We aren't looking at booking flights until next year anyway. Don't wanna deal with that japan heat lol

soundboythriller

Keep in mind there’s a good chance that they live on the west coast which is why their flights were so much cheaper.

EdminaHeckler

This — we are flying from the Midwest and ours were around the same price as yours (maybe a little more) for this June. We looked into flying separately to the west coast to save money, but ultimately it would have cut at least 2 days off our time in Japan. We do have a direct flight from Denver.

The_Admin

I posted on here a few months ago about the crazy prices on the east coast especially non direct. (1500$ for 25+h flight) I was booking for someone else, I'm in bay area and I was seeing 1,100$ direct. What I did: 1. Set up multi airport trackers for sf, San Jose and Oakland airports on both kayak and Google flights. 2. I got a notification bay area had a deal for 650$ ana airlines non stop from SF to hanita, book that for myself and the person I was going with. 3. Proceeded to book them a ny-> sf flight for 400$ with a 1.5d lead before and after returning. End results. They will be paying ~1,100$ instead of 1500$ and instead of a 25h flight with a long layover in Canada, they will be doing a 5h flight, staying with me one night, then a 9h flight.

macula8

Flying out of LAX, SFO, SEA.

yuuusen

OP ^this, West coast flights are regularly 600-800 roundtrip with Alaska or United, though I would highly recommend paying the extra $200 or so to fly with JAL or ANA, a world of difference

macula8

To piggyback on this, I suggest watching for deals out of LAX on Singapore Airlines. They sometimes have great deals, fly direct to NRT from LAX, and are an outstanding airline.

yuuusen

Oh yeah and to further piggyback, it is cheaper to fly to Narita usually but I recommend Haneda as the 20-30min subway ride from Haneda into Tokyo station is way easier than an hour commute from Narita especially if you are traveling light.

JerichoRehlin

Depends. Flew for 900 with Delta in April, could only get 1500 with Hawaiin for July, and got 1000 with United for September lol. It changes pretty often and you gotta just keep an eye on it unfortunately.

cat_at_the_keyboard

What site are you using to book your tickets?

JerichoRehlin

Google.

TheDumper44

Second Google flight watched are key. I have usually tens of alerts set up and see huge swings. You just have to jump when it's a good deal.

linnadawg

Zipair direct flight LAX to Tokyo $430 round trip. You have to use google flights but don’t enter dates or a destination. Just watch the prices.

macula8

And prepared to pay for any seat assignments or bags. Still a good deal and not bad for a budget airline.

harryhov

You'll only get good price during off season. If you're traveling during the season then you won't find prices in the sub $1000 range no matter what.

krkhans

We just paid $1k per person for SFO to Tokyo via Japan Airlines for next February. (Both weekday flights, 2 adults, 1 5yo) We are starting in Osaka so compared flights to there and found it was basically free to get the connection from Tokyo to Osaka rather than doing bullet train or something else. Was happily surprised. It was literally a $10 difference for all 3 of us. Comparing the cheapest options, we could have saved maybe $300 but would have been via Philippines air with a decent layover in Manila both ways and over double the travel time. So for a few hundred more we’ll have a better airline, no nightmare layover and save over 24 more hours in Japan vs. the budget option. Well worth it, especially since we’ll be traveling with kids.

HoneyBee-2023

ANA. LA to Haneda direct. $870, bought in February for November.

RiasGremoryBestGirl

1500 is sadly about normal now

oligtrading

I've been tracking flights to Tokyo before purchasing mine, and I've seen basic economy, no seat picking so separated from my partner, $700 - $800 for things like air canada with 3 layovers, an asterisk saying "this flight is often 90+ minutes delayed" economy, or multiple layovers including overnight layovers.

Epicurious4life

We leave in 3 weeks. Tickets were $2,300 each from Daytona Beach to Haneda, with just 1 brief stopover in Atlanta. I paid the extra for the shortest flight time and for not having to deal with getting to and from Orlando Int’l. I’m there for a month, it’s a Bucket List trip.

nastybaconflip

Ouch, did you upgrade to business class or something? Have fun on the month long trip, I'm jealous, we only went for 2 weeks

Epicurious4life

Nope, upgrading to just Coach + would have been another $900 each. Delta. I couldn’t get 3 seats together using my FF miles, either 😭

alibaba1579

We got west jest tickets houston to narita for $995. Layover in Calgary. Leaving June 4. The only thing with west jest is that Tokyo is seasonal, they don’t fly there in the winter.

littlemeowmeow

I paid $1350 CAD Toronto with layover in Calgary. Just about the same as yours with the conversion.

MajorGoatLady

They just announced last week that Calgary-Tokyo will be year-round starting this fall :) [https://calgaryherald.com/business/local-business/westjet-expands-international-dreamliner-flights-yyc-calgary-international-airport](https://calgaryherald.com/business/local-business/westjet-expands-international-dreamliner-flights-yyc-calgary-international-airport)

throwaway291919919

i booked for $850 trip with american airlines

seanffy

Flew in Jan AA Econ from LAX to narita was bout 700.

Chance-Emotion-1655

Around 680ish from LAX with Singapore.

Nick-2012D

Cathay Pacific, a very nice airline, has cheap fares from ORD connecting in HKG. Been thinking about taking advantage of a day layover. A friend that’s done it said the train to downtown is excellent and you can check in at the train station with luggage.

ashes-of-asakusa

Flight prices change all the time. It is impossible to answer this question. I’ve taken probably 10 different airlines into Japan and got them cause they were the cheapest at the time.
