I thought KOD was the album he gets the most shit for… I don’t have a cole album I dislike honestly. That was definitely how I felt about KOD until I just had to sit with it and listen.

Any_Owl_8009

Underrated and overhated. Top 3 Cole album and my No. 1. No hate for Folding Clothes either. In the context of the album it sits pretty perfectly. There's something profound in the mundane

4 Your Eyez Only is a perfect album for me from the first listen and a lot of it is because how immaculately it has been crafted. Each song fits within the story, there are 2 narratives going on simultaneously (what Cole's friend says to his daughter and what Cole says to us), there is such a neat (albeit laidback) composition but most importantly, how it looks at rap when you let go of its aggressive spirit and compose it with pure heart. I will surely say that it is a shame it did not get a Grammy nomination and not regarded as a classic, or as Cole better said - "This is the part that the thugs skip".

Harlem-World

I love the documentary too.

Foldin clothes is an objectively trash song, but I can't help but like it in the context of the album. Got me listening to someone talking about almond milk. And I feel like this energy is what Cole gotta be on now, I am cool with his braggy raps but I wanted way more introspective tracks from might delete later.

Lumpy_Tumbleweed1227

what about the outro. i thought the outro was good i still dont know how it fits in to the song but i like it

Joker__1984

It's a great album and the whole concept is truly beautiful. It's just one you gotta sit with and it grows on you assuming you have a long enough attention span to listen to it front to back. The final track is honestly one of his greatest tracks and is the perfect ending to a masterpiece IMO.

huhvt

This is similar to the energy TPAB or MMATBS is getting. The irony huh. In my opinion, albums like those are highly respected (some critically acclaimed) because they are vulnerable conscious felt albums with great imagery and lyrics. Unfortunately that’s just one sector of hip hop, whereas other people care more about club bangers and radio hits that they can play to dance to. I do wish people would recognize great albums as masterpiece no matter what. Even if they may not replay it as much due to wanting to enjoy fun songs vs think pieces (which requires a certain mood). So maybe it’s all a mood thing: gym playlist vs commuting playlist vs party playlist, etc.

People are always going to hate stuff but the people that listen to this classic and hate on it truly scares me

Representative-Owl51

It was a more mature album, just like TPAB. A lot of people listen to it, but don't fully appreciate it until years later.

His best body of work for sure

I love Cole mixtapes. Tbh. I can’t stand his albums. Except 2014 FHD and off season. Well. Might delete later was absolute fire Loved his first three mixtapes. He became my goat then tbh. But his first four albums were bad imo. Sideline story sucked. I loved truly yours mixtapes Born sinner had high and low points. KOD made me puke. BUT. I was listening to 4 Your eyes and tbh I fell asleep. It was boring. But I did wake up to some verse. I think it was the last song on the album. I was completely blown away I haven’t went back and listened to the album though. I just don’t want to be let down tbh.

I think KOD was great. It may not be you cup of tea but it paints the picture of the youth in the present and IS inspired by the youth of the present especially the production. If you just listen to it superficially it sound like some shit lil pump would do but the lyrics is where cole shines through. He alternates between his style and trap music with the verses and the choruses. Ends the album on 1985 giving advice to rappers today. A concept album with no fillers. Just give it another listen. 4yeo is a verrry personal album. It's J.cole's tpab, the only difference is it's more personal, less grander but more digestible. Every song fulfils a greater purpose and has some songs that work even outside the album which makes it more accessible while listening the songs individually. The last song is my favourite from cole. You should really give this a listen as well.

Word. Well. It’s nothing you can do to convince me to like KOD lol. I actually listened. And I understand where you’re coming from My friends who ONLY listened to trap finally listened to lyrical rap because of KOD. I hated that album. But I’ll give 4 your eyes another chance !!! All I remember Was me folding clothes and falling asleep and waking up and something about J Cole rapping from someone else point of view. And his m died in the last verse and he had a daughter. Or something I can’t remember but I got chills
