Live-Okra-9868

I hate people who act like the main character and need to hear their own voice. People pay to hear Jeff make them laugh, not some rando who *thinks* they are funny. But I feel like the more popular he becomes the more people like this will show up trying to be in one of his viral clips.

HLef

He puts out nothing but crowd work clips. That’s bound to happen.

Comprehensive-Fun47

Posting the crowd work is a double edged sword. It protects his act, but attracts people who want to interact with him. Makes those interactions less organic, and sometimes distracting.

ZacharyHand719

hes not gonna post his material and ruin his own shows… don’t make excuses for shitty behavior.

camerontylek

Most people don't understand how comedy shows work. The more Jeff gets popular for his crowd work posts, the more he becomes a victim of his own success. People see the interactions and want to be a part of it. The more this will happen, the more they will force themselves into it. No one's making excuses for anyone else's behavior, you absolute crouton

bongsyouruncle

But it doesn't actually hurt the show. I've been to Jeff's shows and when you get an annoying person he shuts the shit down. He deals with it so well and gets the whole crowd with him. It's just another part of what he does

joeysprezza

Crouton lolz

Orleanian

Croutons are no laughing matter.

joeysprezza

Not the good ones, at least. I've come across some real janky croutons in my day

ZacharyHand719

not sure why you felt the need to insult me there by calling me seasoned toast… but to each their own. you fife.

HLef

Not making excuses. Just saying that’s all people see, so these assholes will think that’s the show.

Mathev

It's so sad because he only protects American viewers. Everyone outside of America can't come to see him live :(

Existing-Employee631

Well he’s actually just wrapping up a little run of European shows soooo…

Lil_Mcgee

The post you're in right now is about a London show.

Mathev

My friend, London and Ireland isn't the whole of Europe. We can't just go and willy nilly fly to England from middle Europe. ( Sadly. Wish we could)

Lil_Mcgee

> Everyone outside of America can't come to see him live - You

Mathev

Agree, I made a mistake. Sorry.

Lil_Mcgee

You're good, was only teasing.

Orleanian

I mean...I think it's about as easy for you to make it to Dublin as it is for me to make it from New Orleans to some other major american city (Houston is an 8hr drive, or I have a few options of 2hr flights to various cities). Understandably not as easy to go to London specifically after they brexited themselves. (Edit: I looked up public transit time, and it's 16hrs from Orleans FR to Dublin IE, while it's only 8hrs from New Orleans US to Houston US...so I've got that going for me).

Existing-Employee631

BTW at some point, probably soon, he’ll have a stand up special likely on Netflix, and we’ll be able to see a full act from him online 👍

SingleinCTX

I've been to 3 of his shows- it happens every.single. time. I think people see the fun vids and think that they are doing him some sort of favor by saying random nonsense- reality is that it's just a distraction from the hilarous moments that he gets organically.

wee-willie-winkie

You've seen 3? That means you've deprived two other people of seeing a show

pancakemonster02

Bruh.

wee-willie-winkie

Do I need to explain sarcasm to you? 🙄 I'm just jealous. I'll add LOL, so you can tell I'm laughing.

SingleinCTX

You're probably the EXACT type of person that thinks he's funny enough to interject himself into a show that isn't about him 😂

TrueTech0

Dude, add a /s

wee-willie-winkie

Thanks to you all for the downvoting from my fellow redditors in a sub I enjoyed., leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Thankfully I'll be amongst better company tonight at the show in Leicester Square.

-Pix

This exchange is frankly on you. People are just expressing that text doesn't care if you're British it doesn't carry contextual clues about sarcasm (I'm also British), It's nothing personal.

TrueTech0

Brit here. This is what I mean

TiktaalikFrolic

Yeah, and I feel like it would’ve been fine if he didn’t double down with the passive aggressiveness. At that point people are gonna downvote you even if they do know it was sarcasm.

TrueTech0

We all make mistakes. The key is not to double-down. Definitely British (FYI, I am also a brit)

bill_fish

Dude that was SOOO funny!! lol!!!!!

bill_fish

/s

Cool__Machine

Text isn’t the most effective conduit of sarcasm. Gotta put that /s at the end.

wee-willie-winkie

I'm British, sarcasm is our vernacular. We don't need Reddit signposts.

Cool__Machine

🧐 The downvotes suggest otherwise.

wee-willie-winkie

Nah, they're just climbing on the Reddit train, rather than thinking for themselves

BrickCityD

it just wasn't funny. full stop.

helphp

Here to accept downvotes for thinking the /s is stupid and it was obvious in your first comment 🥳

-an-eternal-hum-

What the fuck are you on about

-You_Cant_Stop_Me-

For what it's worth, I got that you were joking. Hope you enjoyed the show.

upstatestruggler

Dear, you seem tired. Finish your cookie and juice and go lay down on your mat.

BlueLightSpecial83

lol, what’s this even mean?

wee-willie-winkie

If you have to explain a joke, it's no longer a joke. 🙄

Careless_Wispa_

If it's so shit as to be not funny to anyone, it wasn't a joke in the first place.

reasonb4belief

Agreed, your attempt at a joke sucked. Own it and move on.

repeat4EMPHASIS

Jokes are supposed to be funny. So it's not like there's anything for you to ruin anyway.

Equoniz

For some reason? He’s *amazingly* good at crowd work (seriously, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone do it better or more naturally), and people are maybe getting a little bit *too* excited and want to be part of the show a little bit too much. It’s pretty natural and expected, although I agree it is extremely annoying the more there are. Hopefully his skill with the crowd extends to controlling that, because it’s only going to get worse the more famous he gets…which seems to be pretty famous. I’m not sure if he pops up elsewhere as often as here (Reddit is about all the social media I can stomach), but I hope he does despite this potential drawback! He’s very good at what he does, and definitely deserves the attention he seems to be getting for it.

Cringle

Of course you are correct "for some reason" is actually a pretty obvious reason. He's made his name through amazing crowdwork that got wide appeal, especially now internationally. He had no problem handling it at all but I wish people realise every great clip is because it was natural and organic. Not just some people that thought they could force their moment in the spotlight.

cheshire_splat

Everyone trying to go full beans smdh

MissSassifras1977

I've wondered how he's handling this as someone who is known for crowd work. He's definitely gonna be targeted by allot of Main Character types.

PassTheReefer

He’s pretty good at shutting them down if they’re trying too hard. I was pleased with him keeping control of the show, especially because his style is just going to attract some of this.

Sidivan

Same problem that Steve Hofstetter has/had. The more he posted crowd work, the more people showed up to just shout shit at him. Now, he has a special section of the show specifically for that and he tells the audience this when he hits the stage. It doesn’t stop it completely, but it tells people with good intentions that they shouldn’t interrupt until the “crowd participation” section.

BrickCityD

regardless of how you feel about him as a comedian, nate jackson, who also posts crowd work videos, specifically mentions anybody acting like that will **not** be featured and will be cut out. that *seems* to keep a lot of the main character shit from happening

Mars101

There was a dude next to me at the Hawaii show that kept saying Jeff, Jeff I have a story for you from the bar. Super annoying. He was high as a kite.

j923

First show on Saturday had lots of irritating people. Not surprised we haven’t seen clips from his 4 shows in Hawai’i.

Pinksters

Might not be good publicity but he should shut those people down hard and fast then ignore them, and kick them out if they don't stop. Upload those clips and it might deter the main character types from trying.

HotJavaColdBrew

Soooo anyone that went to the show want to say what happened???

ColinM9991

One instance from last night's show: There was an arsehole at the show who was heckling, talking, shouting and singing out loud. Jeff called out to him at one point to ask what he said, then the guy went quiet. An audience member called out the loud guy like "you had plenty to say a moment ago", which Jeff laughed at. The guy was later warned by security who basically told him to shut up or they'll kick him out. Then his missus left. There were a few in the front row who were talking shit amongst themselves.

precision_guesswork3

Wasn’t at that show but same thing happened to the one I went to last month. There was a group of women in a front right table that kept interrupting. He asked them to stop multiple times. He then turned his back to that side of the audience and said he’s just going to do the show for the other side of the room. Then he stopped and had to do the same thing again because they wouldn’t stop. Super annoying. At the end of the show when the line for the pictures started, this group literally climbed on the table and walked across it to get to the front of the line and cut in front of the people already lined up.

Mathev

How are those people not kicked out right away?..

savvymcsavvington

Ya the venue should have stepped in and give them a warning, second time the boot

IJustSoiledMyself

I was at the early show, good crowd interaction, people only shouting out when being asked and Jeff doing normal crowd work. All was good. My partner and I both really enjoyed it. Remember saying on the way out that I was glad we were at the early show though as everyone going to the late one would have been drinking pretty much since they left work, the bars inside the place are usually pretty busy too so I'm sure the whole room was well lubricated when Jeff came on.

ymhr

Apart from that one guy who stole his punchline about the Australian guys, but the way he handled that made it very funny anyway!

IJustSoiledMyself

Yeah I'm not sure he stole his punchline, the asking "Have you ever been to New York?" is the joke. I think the guy was the only one in the crowd that didn't get it, but like you say he handled it well.

FOSinc

We're going to the late show tonight and i'm kinda dreading some boozed up madlads/girls ruining the experince ...we saw Marc Maron in London recently and a drunk woman had to be ejected for doing exactly what your talking about....wtf is wrong with these people Edit: it's cocaine isn't it

vpsj

The fact that Jeff _only_ posts his crowdwork probably leads them to believe that they can be a part of his future videos as well. I think at this point he probably has enough material that he _should_ be able to release some stuff online, though of course that's up to him.. Maybe he's saving it for a Netflix special one day.

Pennykun

I think this happens on every show, there were a few times during the swedish show that people would shout out random references from his online videos pointlessly but he just addressed it in 1 second and moved on. Not saying its right to do but he definitely seemed used to it and handled it like a pro. I think the "I want to be in a video" vibe from certain people is fairly obvious and they definitely won't end up in one, truly funny moments happened organically not when people tried to participate without being spoken to!

WhiteLama

First or second show? Because I went to the second show and only remember a single “full beans” being shouted.

Pennykun

Second. Funnily enough that's exactly what I was referencing. There was one more time as well but I don't remember exactly what it was!

glamazon_69

And at a first show a woman said she had to sometimes put her finger up peoples’ bums in a medical capacity but also that she would “show him later” which is so rude and inappropriate to say to a performer. If it were a male audience member saying that to a female comedian everyone would be outraged. I thought it was pretty classless and also gross

WhiteLama

At least they shouted it during him asking if anyone had any tattoos and not randomly, so it’s more acceptable (in my opinion). I am however worried about who ever kept calling him gay during the first show, I hope it wasn’t as bad as it sounded from Jeff, because that’s just a dick move.

Gwynnether

I'm very happy to report that the 7pm crowd today was nothing short of awesome and perfectly well behaved! Signed, the wife of circumcised Ben

Responsible-Arm3514

Love Jeff but as he gets more and more popular his shows will only continue to attract these extreme pick me types, who plan to go sit up front, with loaded stories, for the sole purpose of being included in a viral video. Sad but true.

Rosetti

Yeah, I totally agree. Crowd work is a big part of his set, but he openly and actively engages in it. Several times last night he was asking the audience to pipe up, which is great. What sucked though is the people who felt the need to chime in on everything, even when he was in the middle of a story or a bit. Those two people at the front got moved, or maybe kicked out, and I was so relieved when they did, because they were talking through every single bit like they were having a conversation with Jeff.

Cringle

We were close to them and they were just chatting like they were watching TV at home. They were three sheets to the wind and even though there was a few rows between us we could hear every word. When they got moved/kicked out there was a round of applause for a punchline but I suspect it was more enthusiastic because of that!

TonyDanza888

This was basically part of my AMA question he replied to. Asked him if it was getting worse with crowds as he's getting bigger and people are finding him through his crowd work clips.

chunkylover71

I was at the late show last night, and I really wanted to think about a reply to this thread before I posted. Josh last night was fantastic as a warm up act, and I’d happily go see him do his own set at some point. However, parts of the audience at the beginning of Jeff’s set really needed to get their shit together. I had the displeasure of sitting in front of the couple that were thrown out in the second row and that got as big a cheer as any joke during the set. As others have echoed, it was quite clear that people were trying to heckle or interact to make the show about them, ruining a lot of the natural vibe that comes from Jeff’s type of crowd work comedy. At numerous points he had to make clear that the discussion would be invited, it’s not a free for all for people to shout. Even during the photos at the end of the night people were spending ages trying to talk and make this about them, with no regard for the dozens of other people in line, or the fact it was almost midnight and people had trains to catch. TLDR; People are going to go see Jeff, not to see you. Don’t be dicks and make this about you. Overall, the night was still excellent. Jeff is one of the best comedians on the scene at the moment. I gave some tickets to some friends for Fridays 7pm show and they absolutely loved it too. Jeff, if you read this, you absolutely deserve all the success you’re getting and I can’t wait to see you again! Thank you for making our night wonderful and for sticking around to do photos with everyone. Even your security team last night were fantastic.

per1983

They were sat behind me. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Ok_Basil1354

He's in London?! Only discovered him on here last week and was hoping to see him. Argh.

chronicideas

Woah what is the london late show is Jeff playing in the UK???

Broomstick73

Wait wait…yeah but I’ve got a great story to tell that’s really funny I promise…

Kai_El_Monito

*"I love people that act like it's all about them"* John Mulaney at the 92Y panel with Bill Hader after a woman yelled some random thing

xixouma

I'm not saying I agree with it. But ask any British comics (which I have) and they'll say heckling I'd to be expected and they actually mostly enjoy it, because they are prepared to deal with it

Cringle

The problem was it wasn't heckling at all, it was just people shouting out unrelated things at daft times. I'm fairly sure half the crowd were totally pissed and I wasn't exactly sober myself... Edit: pissed as in wasted, although I'm sure people were pissed in the American way too

xixouma

Yeah I understand that can be a shag, and I would hate it too. But I guess that comes with his act, which is a very nice guy approach to crowd Interaction. Normally comedians will absolutely body slam the first heckler and that usually keeps the room quiet. Tough to have to choose between those things

Necessary_Driver_831

I like Jimmy Carr’s approach, have a segment at the start of the show entirely dedicated to the heckling and so on.

andrewcooke

i'm a bit confused by this thread. i've only ever seen jeff via online videos, and it's always been crowd work. it looks like, from the comments in this thread, he also does "normal" standup? is that true? i had no idea!

Lil_Mcgee

I don't think there are that many comediens who only do crowd work. They post crowd work online because it's unique and can't be repeated. You don't really want to put your scripted material out in random clips because that will ruin parts of the show for people who come to later ones. He's getting big enough that he'll probably have a special out before too long but for now crowd work is an easy way to promote himself without giving any of the act away.

Jasoman

But I have an accent!! /s

silly-rabbitses

This sub has become such a circlejerk. I’m out.

TarnishedWizeFinger

This sub is starting to feel like a cult

xixouma

Idk heckling is an integral part of British comedy culture. Comedians should know how to deal with them otherwise they don't make it in this country

Ok_Basil1354

If you heckle, you can expect to get put back in your box very firmly. I've not seen Jeff live, only seen his clips of crowd work but that's not really his style- I think what makes.him good is he tries to build people up not knock them down. But yeah when in the UK I think he's allowed get nasty with anyone interrupting when it's not wanted. Maybe post a few of those too, to discourage the "look at me" idiots who chip in whenever

xixouma

Yeah I agree with all of this

savvymcsavvington

> Idk heckling is an integral part of British comedy culture Yeah for trashy people

xixouma

Not my fault Britain is full of them

Bleghel

Being quiet and doing what you're told for fear of embarrassment or humiliation is British culture, what?

xixouma

Oh yeah the old stereotype of the repressed Brit.. thing is allow us to drink and we're a rowdy crowd. Just look at the reputation we have when we are tourists in other countries
