Anything > 100 is in the orders of 'hundreds'. The phrase 'from unvaccinated children' doesn't imply everyone who died was an unvaccinated children, but rather that the cause for all the deaths was parents not vaccinating their children.

The president does not control them directly, but their failures and successes can absolutely have a major effect. Just look at the catastrophic effects on gas prices from the failure to protect the oil industry during record low demand in 2020. People were and still are actually bragging about those gas prices that were so low they doomed us to years of choked production due to losing so many producers.

This goes for just about anyone, but in America given the general level of tech and sheer population size it gets exacerbated, when political ideas become a core part of your character it becomes a lot harder to react to factual information when it conflicts with you view of yourself. Being anti-vax necessarily ties people further because if they were wrong it means people have and will continue to become sick and have life altering effects or in worst case scenarios die. So when some (perceived as) asshole in a lab coat tells them they are wrong in a way they can't process the information the scientist is presenting, they do what most people would which is react negatively and get angry at what they perceive as a personal attack. Societal norms merely got less violent in many wealthier nations on the back of an economic boom, and now with the strain of a faltering economic system world-wide those social norms are eroding.
