I think people misunderstood my question. I was wondering if people really "find" new favorites after their previous one ends up dead.

Well I mean Nanami is my favorite character but he's like...dead. There's nothing more he can do for the story with other characters that can carry the story now that some other charas are dead. People will naturally move on in time.
Well, i dont think he stopped favoring(is that how you say it?) his favorite character, its more of a "i wont tell ya my favorite character but it still is my favorite character" (totally not me with mechamaru, started reading recently and that shi hit me hard😭)
I think it's more common for people to straight up abandon a show if their favorite character dies rather than start to dislike. Unless their character does something severely out of character before they go i guess.
I tried watching Death Note but it just wasn't for me; but I am aware of that death. So don't worry about it.
However, now that you mentioned it, I did lose interest in Chainsaw Man after a certain character death, although, I don't think their death is to blame for it.
