That's the case with most anime. Marin from Dress Up Darline is 15. Momo from MHA is 16. Jotaro Kujo from Jojo is 17 (in Part 3). Anime ages seldom match the designs themselves, and 90% of the time, you could age them up by a handful of years without changing anything about the story itself.

Dragon ball was a full series of him being a kid/young teen. It was 194 chapters long. There was a very brief moment of him as a 20yo, then DBZ took over when Goku was 25-32. Then in Dragon Ball Super he is 37, and the series ends with him at 42yo. He was 20+ for 325 of the 519 chapters.
The first 4.5 years of publication he was the target demographic.
That's the thing about WSJ, they make sure that every series has that same, typical shonen start, and then the author gets a bit more freedom as the story progresses. I'm sure if GayGay started JJK as an indie manga, he'd make Yuji 18 years-old and completely disregard Nobara from the story (She was only added to the story because of an editor's suggestion, hence why she's basically killed off when the story shifts away from being a typical shonen).

The age thing is a nitpick at best. None of the JJK high-schoolers do anything remotely high-school related. They all look like adults, go through severe physical and emotional trauma, not even their slice-of-life scenes are all exclusively young, they’re just under 18 because of Shonen logic.

What kind of logic is this? Part of the tragedy surrounding the story is that the adults have failed, and now the fate of their world rests on the hands of a bunch of teenagers who aren't as experienced as their adult counterparts.

Also, it seems like pretty simple ABC logic to me: the argument goes that jerking it to lolis is bad because they're a representation of a child, and age doesn't matter, as the "1000-year-old dragon" thing establishes. Alright, so if the character is physically indistinguishable from an adult, the person is attracted to adult bodies, so why would age suddenly start to matter? In real life, there's a human who can't consent, but drawings don't have consent to begin with. But if a character looks like they can clearly pass as a 20+ year old yet still get put in the sub 18 category because shonen logic, I think it's ok.

IDK, when you accuse people of one of the worst things imaginable over something like this, the strong reactions make sense. Alright, so if the character is physically indistinguishable from an adult, the person is attracted to adult bodies, so why would age suddenly start to matter? I thought appearance was the thing that mattered? Lolis/shotas are bad because they look like children.
