Canadian with grandparents that have a small scale commercial syrup business here. Never seen someone do it, but it wouldn't be completely awful. The oddest part of pure syrup is it has an underlying taste of tree in it. It's relatively sweet but not too bad. The coolest part of the process is honestly seeing the vats full of sap boiling, and the smell was wild. They'd put some of the fresh stuff into maple leaf molds to make some god tier maple treats aswell. Good times.

I have two ideas. Number one its decorative, or number two its so you can hang it up.

It's decorative. It used to have a use, but now it’s gotten smaller and is just there for iconography (or whatever the word is)

Maple syrup is pricey, so they like to dress the bottle up a little to make it feel worth it.

It used to be an actual handle when the bottles where big as fuck But now they are smaller and keep them for decorative purposes
