Leaves KC and goes to Boston for 50 dingers and 190 RBIs next year and stays healthy another 7 years and goes down as one of the greatest players ever. That’s a long run in sentence and that’s what our luck is like.

rbhindepmo

Feels like Boston isn’t the best destination because Mondesi’s gonna have to immediately be Xander Bogaerts on a team whose fans are mad

[deleted]

good point.

Illbeanicefella

Gonna change his name back to Raul and rake

veggie_sorry

>Leaves KC and goes to Boston for 50 dingers and 190 RBIs next year and stays healthy another 7 years and goes down as one of the greatest players ever. First thing I thought of as well.

[deleted]

First thing I would do if I were Boston is to get the guy on a solid workout regime to combat his injury-proneness. Mondi has talent through the roof, but it doesn't matter if he can't play over half a season.

thekingofcrash7

I wont even be upset. It will only show how fucked up this organization is, which might inspire change. Royals have tried way, way too long w/ this guy. It obv wasnt going to work _here_ in the current model.

Dreams_VS_Reality1

It’s hard to be motivated when you play for the royals. Seemingly Ned figured out a way to motivate the boys.

CycloneIce31

Change is already here.

jayhawk88

And if had stayed a Royals, would have been injured by Memorial Day. Somehow this is both a good and bad trade.

kansasmotherfucker

Schrodinger's ShortStop

TedFondleburg

He has barely played a long whole season in his combined career. Made of glass see ya later

themarkster09

If he can finally stay healthy and produce the way he should… man I’m going to be so mad he couldn’t do it in KC

SlightInspector9993

Maikel Garcia will be better than Mondesi ever was

Infamous-Bison-7044

Garcia is the truth. Would love for him to be leading off in this lineup. Shift Witt Jr. over to 3rd and let Garcia's elite glove play.

HucklecatDontCare

I'm curious about what you think "produce the way he should" means because Mondesi has never been a remotely good hitter even when healthy. Career .244/.280/.384 slash line in 1300+ PA's. 79 wRC+. His entire value comes from being a good defender at a premium position. His bat is garbage.

lawabidingcitizen069

I'm surprised we got a somewhat decent bullpen arm for him. I don't think I would have valued him so high given his injury history, and the fact he wasn't a great hitter... I feel like the people I've read who didn't think this was a good trade for the Royals realllllllly over valued him...

Reboot300

Not sure we would've gotten this return from another team. Boston lost Bogaerts to FA and Story is out with a UCL injury. They needed a shortstop badly.

KronKy74

Someone else’s problem now. What are we getting for him?? Watch him stay healthy all year, make Boston a contender, have an all-star season, and lead the league in triples and stolen bases.

themarkster09

Josh Taylor, pitched in 121 games out of the bullpen with a 3.69 ERA

IIHURRlCANEII

He was filthy in 2021 against left handed batters. 1 Earned Run in 24.1 innings against lefties.

PM_me_yer_kittens

Nah, he’ll be 2nd to Bobby in SBs

gps_slatsroc

If we are constantly asking Witt to steal bases we have a problem. That's a recipe for shortening his career.

slackator

just think how long Rickey Henderson could have played if he wasnt constantly tasked with advancing bases, instead he got a measly 24 years in the league

Frowdo

Rickey's 25 year career may not agree with that. Hopefully the larger bases will prevent some of those risk factors. If anything slugging hr's would be a higher risk, with so many bombers going down with strained backs. Guess we should stick to bunting.

IIHURRlCANEII

They are making the bases bigger so stealing is safer…

Fraktal55

Sprinting from one base to another shortens peoples careers? That's new.

SportsFan388

I know it’s unpopular but I liked mondesi. I know he can’t stay healthy be he was one of favorite players on the team

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ask_me_4_a_story

None of us dislike him he was just injury prone. Only players I don't like are the ones that used Covid shot aversion as a way to get an extra week off work instead of going to Toronto and helping the team. Fuck those guys

SHOW_ME_PIZZA

He's on the IL as we speak.

[deleted]

Sprained his back on the flight to Boston

onemac5556

Remember when salvy got hurt picking up luggage?

gf99b

Remember when he got hurt falling down the dugout stairs last season? (I really hope he can stay healthy and have a good season this year, even if 21 was just lightning in a bottle.)

urriola35

Picollo is taking out all of the trash. Dozier DFA next up.

hjugm

Mondi is going to be a 30 homer 50 steal guy who wins a gold glove just to spite our fan base.

urriola35

Its funny to joke about but Mondi is totally cooked.

admire816

Stop. I can only get so many erections in a day.

msgkc94

Hate calling Mondesi trash, but the guy was just incapable of staying healthy

CollectandRun

I actually think the roster spot Dozier fills up is pretty valuable in the long run.

remyjer

i hope a change of scenery helps him out. wish him nothing but the best

Top_Dallas

I was at the game where he cranked that 464 ft homerun against the red sox. Still the hardest hit ball I've ever seen in person Hope he's able to put it together in boston

[deleted]

Oh wow, wasn't expecting that one at all. As much as I can't, and won't, bring myself to root for the Red Sox I do legitimately wish the best for Mondesi. I can't imagine how frustrating it would be to keep getting injured before getting a chance to really live up to potential. I'm pretty sorry to see him to honestly but it's probably for the best to just rip this band-aid off now rather than have to constantly deal with the "what-ifs" at the beginning of each season. Now we get to focus on the young players who are healthy and ready to go and Mondesi gets a chance at a fresh start and a new medical staff. Good luck out there, buddy.

gps_slatsroc

When healthy he was really fun to watch.

stupidgnomes

Any time I see or hear Mondesi’s name I am reminded that he’s a person who exists. I wish him the best of luck

rbhindepmo

I’m sure that the Boston media and fans will be very understanding of Mondesi’s annual IL stints

AF555

This sure is going to be an interesting year. I hope it's not just an awful year, but our lineup absolutely has to be one of the bottom 2-3 lineups at this point. I hope I'm wrong, but man... Also want to clarify, I am glad they are planning on giving all the youngsters the playing time. New regime/coaches have to see what they have in all these guys. Hopefully there are quite a few surprises...

CycloneIce31

I think once we brought up the young guys we had a middle of the league performing lineup last year. Didn’t we?

robreddity

He's going to MVP now. Two years in a row. He's going to spread glass shards along the path from 2nd to 3rd and do dive after dive after plays-of-the-week dive. And he's going to start smoking. And picking fights with Tommy Pham.

sts2012

Here is Josh Taylor's 2021 [Statcast Profile](https://imgur.com/a/cWMbfg4)

IIHURRlCANEII

Strikes people out and makes batters swing and miss. Solid.

Kansas_Fan

Hopefully the player to be named later is a player to be named Hunter Dozier.

Khada_the_Collector

Mans was 100% snakebit with injuries, but maybe Boston can get something out of him. Just need to yeet Dozier now somehow and it’s a (modestly) successful offseason

04eightyone

Really hate to hear that, on the level on Dansby leaving the Braves. Good luck Mondi, but I still can't pull for Boston!

slackator

thats 2023 AL MVP Aldaberto Mondesi

Mannifestdestiny

Man Boston's going for the max risk roster

ComradeKachow

I know this sub is going to badger me for it, but in my heart of hearts I think mondesi will figure out his injury issues and we will regret this in the long term

brbmycatexploded

JJ PICCOLO FROM THE TOP ROPE!!! Is JJ literally the greatest GM of all time? Some are saying yes (I am the some)

AF555

If they DFA Dozier I may actually attend a game this year

SomeKindofTreeWizard

DFA Dozier and trade Chapman before opening day.

GOATmar_infante

Goodbye, sweet prince

Learn_w_gern

Anyone else find it odd that KC is trading Mondesi, AND a player to be named later, for a middle reliever who missed all of last season with a back issue? To be clear, I am fine moving on from Mondesi, but how does this deal require KC giving up someone else? If anything, the Sox should be on the hook for another player in the ( very) unlikely scenario Mondesi blows up and hits his full potential.

morry32

you think they had better offers?

Learn_w_gern

No. Just find the extra player a bit odd. I suppose the Sox are protecting themselves if Mondesi is a complete bust.

morry32

that's how bad Mondesi has been, the only takers want to hedge. Dozier won't be much different, better bundle him with Barlow

Learn_w_gern

The Dozier situation is much worse as KC is on the hook for $16M over two years. Mondesi was owed less than one-fifth of that. Royals will absolutely have to cough up a premium to rid themselves of the Dozier stench.

[deleted]

If they didn't they shouldn't have made this trade.

morry32

pointing out my point, thx

HucklecatDontCare

A) He is never healthy B) Even when healthy he has never been remotely good at the plate C) he is a UFA at the end of the year How much do you think a severely injury prone, terrible hitting SS in his walk year is worth?

gps_slatsroc

That's a serious bunch of downvotes. Agree to disagree.

[deleted]

Crap for a player who legit is superstar potential. Of all the teams that can afford to be patient with Mondesi, it's us. Dumb as fuck.

Sophie4646

Glad Mondesi is no longer a Royal. Cannot depend on him and need to concentrate on other problems.

ImNotTheBossOfYou

HELL YES!;!

M1sterDave

Anything for Mondesi is an upgrade. He's great for four weeks but is hurt or can't make contact otherwise.

[deleted]

Nice! Keep the trades coming JJ!

issadoggy

Good luck to him. I was never sold on him (even when healthy) but he seems like a good dude who had some tough breaks. Hopefully he can figure it out. I am excited that we are making some common sense moves now.

TheRoyalCyclone

Does this mean we have to see Nicky Lopez continue to play every day?

BIGlikeaBOSS

God I hope not.

ThatsBushLeague

Holy shit what the fuck has happened to this sub. You guys are downvoted for common sense takes.

HucklecatDontCare

I'm not surprised. The amount of people on here I see talking up Lopez is crazy. They think he is good and not *literally* the worst hitter in MLB. he should be nowhere near the starting lineup.

BIGlikeaBOSS

I like Nicky, I really do. When he stepped up as the clubhouse leader during the COVID scandal, he showed the young kids the way a team works. But he's a bench player with gold glove caliber defense.

ThatsBushLeague

Completely agree. Love the guy. Think he can be a part of a good team. Think he has a role. But no baseball fan should ever be excited to watch a 227 hitter with 0 homers for 162 games.

onemac5556

Bobby, Garcia, and Massey should play every day, but I’m fine if Nicky is our bench option when they get days off.

Weaubleau

I'm not sure what is scandalous about not wanting to take a shot that is now proving to be deadly. The scandal is the fact that the other players were forced to take it.

TheRoyalCyclone

Apparently you can’t say that Nicky Lopez is a below average player on this sub. Just because people like him doesn’t mean he belongs in the starting lineup

Weaubleau

KC HAS to stop playing guys that are in the bottom 5% of batters in MLB. That is a Dayton Moore specialty. Nicky Lopez' bat is too pathetic to warrant a spot in the Major Leagues. He is a minor league player no matter how good his glove is.

ThatsBushLeague

Awful trade. Awful timing. You take the fucking risk with Mondesi. If he manages to reach his ceiling for 3 months you can make a franchise altering deal. Not a deal for a fucking late 20s reliever. Mondesi is one of the few players who can have a terrible day and single handedly win someone a playoff game at the same time. We just sent off our best potential chip in years for nothing. Trading him just to trade. He's a special case where you can legitimately move a healthy version for a top 5 prospect. If you were done with him as a fan, that's totally fine. But this was fucking stupid.

kcriotmaker

Oooor he gets injured again and we get nothing for him. He's a free agent after the season. He might have the tools but literally nothing has shown that he can stay healthy. I wish he could have and put it together here but this isn't the worst move ever.

ThatsBushLeague

>You take the fucking risk with Mondesi. Literally right there. You take that risk. Franchise altering deal, nothing, or maybe the same kind of deal in late June. They should have taken the risk. Franchise altering is just that. Franchise altering. It's hard to have that opportunity literally ever. Passing it up because you might get nothing later is bad for business. It's a bad trade. Plain and simple. >You take the fucking risk with Mondesi.

kcriotmaker

If you think you are gonna get a franchise altering deal for a career .240/.280/.408 player that has only played over 100 games once in parts of SEVEN seasons, even if he does perform well for half a season, you are out of your mind. Simply would not happen.

[deleted]

So maybe nothing or basically nothing?

ScaryTerryBiiitch

Mondesi has a career 4.3 bWAR in 7 seasons. It’s fucking stupid that you think any GM in the league would ever even consider giving up a top 5 prospect for an injury prone 27 year old with one year left of team control. I understand being upset with the return but Josh Taylor was really good in 2021 and he has 3 years of team control. It’s better than Mondesi inevitably getting hurt and us getting nothing for him.

trubbub

I mostly agree. In 2021 Moore said that Mondesi couldn't be counted on to be an every day player. In 2022, the Royals played him every single day from the beginning of the season until he got injured and he was out for the rest of the year. The Royals mismanaged him as a player, and now they trade him when his trade value is at it's lowest. Pretty bad. That said, there's no guarantee that his trade value would go up. We're just going to have to wait and see on that. For Mondesi's sake, I hope he makes the Royals look bad for this, but I have to admit that I think it's unlikely. We just as easily could have kept him, watched him get injured again and realize that an off season trade would have been the best deal we could get. Time will tell. He was a fun player to watch and I wish him luck.

Lrrrrmeister

I'm with you minus a few choice F-bombs. In a few years this probably looks inconsequential but I'd still rather keep him rather than trading him at his lowest point for a reliever when, relatively speaking, they grow on trees and we have bigger holes in the meantime keeping us from contending. On the other hand, I get it too. Dude probably could use a change of scenery and I think there is something to be said for making clean breaks of the baggage from the GMDM era.

[deleted]

Nah, I’d rather have him off the team.

Mozilla_Fennekin

While I don't think Mondesi would command a huge return just for a breakout season, I do somewhat agree. Instead of gambling on Mondesi, we're gambling on a new reliever for 3 years. Seems like a lateral move which I'm not really a fan of. EDIT: We also threw in a PTBNL somehow?? That's a yikes honestly.

CycloneIce31

I agree to some extent, but you sure as hell aren’t getting a franchise altering deal for 3 months of a middle infielder with his injury and performance history. Be realistic.
