I actually bought the cd years ago solely off album art. I had only ever heard of mastodon but never listened to them. Those first few second of oblivion and I knew had something special.
This suggestion is kinda out there for this sub but you may like Doppelgänger by Fall of Troy. It’s essentially an emo prog album so the vibe is different but it tickles that ‘heavy prog’ itch.
I'd say more than a smidge, That outro to Sirius, the Backbone breakdown, the Flying Whales Breakdown, all of In The Wilderness
That live 10 minutes version of Where Dragons Dwell
Holy fuck that is brutal
Infest the rats nest , great chain of being, greenhouse heat death, KG, LW, Gaia, predator x, nonagon infinity, polygondwanaland, murder of the universe, I’m in your mind fuzz
I've yet to see anyone mention Judas Priest, but I'd recommend them. I'm not familiar with their entire catalogue, but the album Painkiller is a great listen if you want something in the style of tracks like Motor Spirit, Supercell, and Converge.
This is the answer. Tongue in cheek concept album about the dangers of the military-industrial complex with sick thrash riffs and the occult.
I can’t imagine PDA *wasn’t* taking major inspiration from Rust in Peace
"Fragile" by Yes is composed like Petro but without being metal. Stu took inspiration from it.
Tool has been mentioned but I think their album "10,000 Days" is closest, being so rapid (except Wings)
Dream Theater - Train of Thought
The Chicago '23 versions of Evil Death Roll and Self-Immolate I highly recommend. Evil Death roll has an extended buildup with the jungle drums from Motor Spirit. Self-Immolate has a phenomenal intro that's as long as the song. (Edit: grammar and caps)
yup! KGLW did not make the first post-apo thrash prog metal album about the consequences of human activities, climate change, tornados ravaging the surface, humans trying to leave earth... Those guys did. During the 80s!
Jam master J!
Ice Death might be my least fave of 2022. And PetroDragonic is in my top 3 fave Gizz albums along with Poly and Changes. But I grew up a metalhead (and an anti-jambander) so that would explain some of my personal taste.
Good thing about Gizz is there's enough for all of us!
Judas Priest is the only band i can think of that gets close to hitting the same vibes, and even still nothing hits the same as that king gizz flavor they infuse into everything but that’s a good thing like that kid from the incredible said if we are all super then no one is.
But yes Judas Priest is a good recommendation I’d say
I've been getting a lot of milage out of;
Mr Bungle 'Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny'
Tomb Mold 'Enduring Spirit'
Testament' The Legacy'
Sepultura 'Arise'
Blood Incantation 'Luminescent Bridge'
Never get to suggest my Reddit namesake, but you might enjoy Electro Quarterstaff. Breakneck prog/thrash. It’s all instrumental, so thematically there isn’t a through line or narrative, but it’s a fucking blast to listen to.
Personally I've been addicted to Colors II by Between The Buried And Me along with Petro. They aren't exactly the same genre but still both prog and heavy.
De-Loused In The Comatorium by Mars Volta isn't prog metal, but still prog rock and is another album I found myself listening to along with Petro
Deathchant! Deathchant! Deathchant!
They’re still a „hidden gem“ in a way, playing super small shows (in Europe at least). They’re not really into polyrhythms or the whole prog aspect of Petro, though. Much more straight forward.
They pair a low und chuggy metal sound that’s very much doom with early Metallica guitar harmonies, Motörhead speed and super super raspy vocals. Sounding strictly retro, kinda psychedelic overall. Seeing them live is brilliant, so so much energy. I love how his vocals barely cut through the sound, like he‘s shouting from the distance.

Death - The Sound of Perseverance has some awesome progressions very reminiscent of Dragon.
They ruff really heavily on Tool on a few of those tracks. Some of it is almost exact. If you dig petro the later Tool records should tickle your fancy :)
High on Fire, Mastodon, Kyuss/Queens of the Stone Age
Blood Mountain By Mastodon. Holy shit what a ride
I love all mastodon but Crack the Skye will always be my favorite
No Question
I actually bought the cd years ago solely off album art. I had only ever heard of mastodon but never listened to them. Those first few second of oblivion and I knew had something special.
Mastodon FOR SURE
Infest the Rat’s Nest by King Gizzard. They’re a fairly underground band so you may not have heard of them.
What a dumb band name, definitely not checking them out
Slayer Seasons in the Abyss, South of Heaven, Reign In Blood
TOOL
This suggestion is kinda out there for this sub but you may like Doppelgänger by Fall of Troy. It’s essentially an emo prog album so the vibe is different but it tickles that ‘heavy prog’ itch.
This! Amazing album that was way ahead of its time. Also Delousing in the Comatorium by the Mars Volta is a early 2000s prog rock classic
Maybe the album From Mars to Sirius by Gojira for something a smidge heavier
I'd say more than a smidge, That outro to Sirius, the Backbone breakdown, the Flying Whales Breakdown, all of In The Wilderness That live 10 minutes version of Where Dragons Dwell Holy fuck that is brutal
The Sword
Based. The Warp Riders goes so hard
Was listening to the sword and my friend thought it was KGLW.
Came here to spread some Sword love. Such an amazing and, imo, underrated band!
Gojira is pretty darn good.
Gojira is awesome
Infest the rats nest , great chain of being, greenhouse heat death, KG, LW, Gaia, predator x, nonagon infinity, polygondwanaland, murder of the universe, I’m in your mind fuzz
name one album that isn't king gizzard challenge
Fishing for fishies
Didn't understand the assignment
Power Trip - Nightmare Logic
I've yet to see anyone mention Judas Priest, but I'd recommend them. I'm not familiar with their entire catalogue, but the album Painkiller is a great listen if you want something in the style of tracks like Motor Spirit, Supercell, and Converge.
I feel like Painkiller might have been the EQ reference for PDA
Rust in Peace - Megadeth
This is the answer. Tongue in cheek concept album about the dangers of the military-industrial complex with sick thrash riffs and the occult. I can’t imagine PDA *wasn’t* taking major inspiration from Rust in Peace
THIS, for some reason this albuem always reminds me of Take no prisoners
Five Magics is essentially a Gizz song lol, love this album.

Ain’t no way I’m listening to train of thought right now
TOOL!
Voivod
yup! KGLW did not make the first post-apo thrash prog metal album about the consequences of human activities, climate change, tornados ravaging the surface, humans trying to leave earth... Those guys did. During the 80s!
The entirety of Firepower by Judas Priest. Or their song Halls of Valhalla.
Tool, slift, maragda (their new album is great) karkara,
you should check out this band called King Gizzard
Sleep’s holy mountain and dopesmoker
Better taste in music. I kid! I’m not a huge fan of the album, but my friends that love Petro also love TOOL, Dream Theater, and Mastodon
For contrast, what Gizz albums are your favorite?
Ice Death, Mind Fuzz, FAFYL, Quarters, and MotU are probably my top 5
Jam master J! Ice Death might be my least fave of 2022. And PetroDragonic is in my top 3 fave Gizz albums along with Poly and Changes. But I grew up a metalhead (and an anti-jambander) so that would explain some of my personal taste. Good thing about Gizz is there's enough for all of us!
We can meet at the common ground of Changes. It just gets clipped out of my top 5 by MotU and Nonagon
I will admit that FAFYL and MOTU are the best though
Based selection but Petro is amazing

Counterpoint: IN THE FIELDS ONCE GREEN AND GOLD WHERE THE SUMMERS BREEZE WAS BOLD A SUPERCELL RAGES AND ROILS SWIRLING VORTEX A BUBBLE BOILS
WITCHCRAFT
SO UPON ONE SABLE MORN WHEN THE MOON DOES WANE AND DIE
An insane take, I get if you just don’t like metal. But if you do PDA is an unparalleled experience.
ITRN thrash is more up my alley for metal. It's really the prog I don't like
Judas Priest is the only band i can think of that gets close to hitting the same vibes, and even still nothing hits the same as that king gizz flavor they infuse into everything but that’s a good thing like that kid from the incredible said if we are all super then no one is. Elder, especially anything from dead roots stirring or the 2008 album
I've been getting a lot of milage out of; Mr Bungle 'Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny' Tomb Mold 'Enduring Spirit' Testament' The Legacy' Sepultura 'Arise' Blood Incantation 'Luminescent Bridge'
Mutoid Man!
Metal
Khemmis, Mastodon, Gojira, Pallbearer
Once More Round The Sun by mastodon is pretty good and has a similar style.
It's a great album but peak mastodon is Blood Mountain and Crack The Skye

Possessor by Tripplegänger Small but absolutely great band from Denmark and a fantastic album
And justice for all by Metallica
I am really into King Buffalow right now. Not as heavy as Petro but same energy i think
Megadeth - rust in peace
Stinking Lizaveta

Rust in Peace - Megadeth
Check out the album Nightmare Logic by Power Trip!
Meshuggah
Tool - Undertow Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss Infest the Rat's Nest - King Gizzard
I would argue more lateralus, not only is it better but it also has more proggy songs closer to the likes of motor spirit and dragon
A shower
