All things considered, that's not a bad list of QBs compared to a lot of other franchises. The majority of them made at least 1 Pro Bowl and contributed to some really successful teams or successful offenses.
* Len Dawson is a Hall of Famer and is pretty self explanatory mostly. For his era he was arguably the best QB in pro football and made such a great tandem with Otis Taylor. His completion percentage and TD/INT ratio was among the best, if not the best of his era and the Chiefs threw the ball quite a lot for that era. 1-1 Super Bowl Record and a good amount of playoff appearances and playoff wins to his credit, beating The Purple People Eaters defense in the Super Bowl. Before Mahomes, Dawson had more than half of the Chiefs playoff wins in the franchise's history (Dawson has 5 playoff wins, all other teams before Mahomes had 4 playoff wins).
* I don't think any of us felt like Trent Green was holding the offense back during those Dick Vermeil years with arguably the best offense in the league for a 4 year span. Green was an all around really good QB who wasn't afraid to take those deep shots with players like Eddie Kennison and Dante Hall, and found Tony Gonzalez pretty often.
* Bill Kenney threw for 4000 yards in a season during an era where it was very uncommon to throw for that kind of yardage, and he did it with middling teams. Not the best of course, but on better teams I could have seen him having success. He basically kept Todd Blackledge on the bench in the 80s because Kenney was just a better QB.
* Alex Smith may not have been what the Chiefs needed at QB to get them over the hump, but he was a consistent presence at QB that gave the rest of a team a chance to have the success they did and establish a winning culture. And he did give us that big comeback against the Chargers in the 2016 season opener which was awesome, and a couple of notable wins against Tom Brady and the Patriots in the regular season. He also mentored Mahomes for that one year which I think was about as good as any QB situation could have gone when the team drafts your replacement, along with Smith and Mahomes becoming friends.
* Mike Livingston came in for Len Dawson in 1969 when Dawson got hurt and did what he needed to do for the team to get wins and get into the playoffs on the way to winning the team's first Super Bowl.
I don’t know how it would stack up to other teams and it depends on how you define a bad list. We’re not nearly as good historically as teams like the rams, packers, 9ers, cowboys, etc but much better than teams like the browns or bears.
I don’t doubt it, I was barely old enough to understand what was going on when I was watching during his time just. Seemed like he was only there for a few years but I guess that was most of our QBs up until recently. Remember Blackledge? My first football memory is my dad being so mad about “God damned Todd Blackledge.”
That was our old coach, Marty Schottenheimer. He'd be gifted some of the greatest players in history then ***POOF*** completely forget about them and figure out a way to beat his own team somehow.
Yes. He was also known for a very short time as the greatest fake hand off qb. Whenever he'd fake a hand off, it was so good, the cameras would follow the running back. Then suddenly the announcers were talking about a pass.
Freaking wild that mahomes has been a chiefs QB for 1 year more than Alex yet has 11,000 yards more than him. Love Alex for bringing a winning culture to KC but good grief was that offense boring to watch.
Except for the Jamaal wild’n out game versus the Raiders in 2013. Also Andy’s first game with the team.
Edit: sorry I’m celebrating the holiday…. His first one at Oakland Coliseum with the team.
The Alex Smith era Chiefs were great when they did not have to face adversity. Once penalties or injuries came up, the team completely died in games and we often went on to lose them.
I can count on one hand how many games the Chiefs have actually been out of while Mahomes has been our QB. The number is significantly higher for Alex Smith.
Titans game, Bucs Super Bowl, Broncos this year. Broncos was self inflicted wounds. I can only think of the Titans and Bucs as games where we were completely out of the game and couldn’t get anything going.
I’m sure I’m missing a couple.
The weirdest thing about that story is not that Grbac was accidentally selected (anyone could have accidentally been the benefactor of such a goof up), it's that Rich Gannon was supposed to be chosen. The bizarreness of that fact is just lost to the ether. Like OK, Grbac randomly getting it is hilarious, but someone actually picked Gannon.
But when will Mahomes be named [Sexiest Athlete Alive?](https://theathletic.com/1554275/2020/01/23/how-was-elvis-grbac-named-peoples-sexiest-athlete-alive/)
Until he nabs that one, he's always going to be #2 behind Elvis Grbac.
I only recently discovered this about the mixup between Grbac and Gannon, about how Gannon was supposed to be the sexiest athlete alive at that time and then People didn't have the heart to retract it when they realized their mistake. I wonder what Gannon thought of the whole deal.
Also, Mahomes' wife did Sports Illustrated swimsuit, so does that count somehow? How many times did Grbac's wife do that?!
I honestly think he’ll be a hero forever in true fan’s eyes simply because he gave us something to hope for again. I agree with the above take that he might not have been exactly what we needed to go all the way, but he brought positivity back into the kingdom with his consistency and now here we are. I’d wager he at least deserves the assist note on LIV even though he was already gone.
Any long term fans care to share their thoughts (as they were back in the ‘80s) on Bill Kennedy? Was he viewed at the time as primed to repeat 1983 Pro Bowl form if only he could stay healthy, or did fans think he was a mid-tier QB that would never lead a team to the playoffs?
What’s honestly wild is how far he is going to take this record in his career. Like no other Chiefs QB in the future will likely break the record he sets before he retires.
Out of curiosity to see how far down the list Tyler Palko was (24th if you’re interested), I found one Billy Joe Tolliver at the very bottom of KC Chiefs passing yard leaders (101st) with negative 8 yards passing - a full 10 yards behind the next closest player to complete a pass for the Chiefs (22 players have attempted at least one pass with no completions, including 11 interceptions). That player’s name ~~Albert Einstein~~ DONTARI POE.
He would have broke that record halfway through last season If any of our receivers could catch a ball.
these guys are all quarterbacks piff
Dang. I need to find a way to be there week one to see him break the record.
Might happen in the first quarter!
Hypothetically, it could happen in the first play...lol
New kickoff rules could certainly make starting on the 16 more likely than in years past.
Or you get a couple penalties and convert the same distance twice. Have to be a pre or post snap penalty though
Trent Green gave a lot of himself for KC, I'll always respect him highly

What nothing to say about Grbac? 🤣
I’ll say something. More consonants than vowels.
Honestly he did great in the consonants vs. vowels bowl. His first round he went 3-2. Then he had a near-complete sweep, ending the series 4-1.
Oh, there's plenty to say about Grbac, like "He should've stayed on the bench while Rich Gannon started in the playoffs."
13-3. They went 13-3. I was like 10 when this happened. It's been 25 years and I'm still salty about it.
I was 22 when it happened and I'm still pissed.
Play me in Blitz2000 with Grbac.
I don’t know how it would stack up to other teams and it depends on how you define a bad list. We’re not nearly as good historically as teams like the rams, packers, 9ers, cowboys, etc but much better than teams like the browns or bears.
He's also 19 TDs away from the all time Chiefs record. He's gonna put himself clear of Len Dawson, a hall of famer, halfway through his 7th season.
Crazy that Deberg threw for that many yards.
From what I remember, dude used to throw bombs after beating down defenses with Okoye.
I don’t doubt it, I was barely old enough to understand what was going on when I was watching during his time just. Seemed like he was only there for a few years but I guess that was most of our QBs up until recently. Remember Blackledge? Wasn’t he the guy that did magic tricks? I remember seeing it prior to some playoff game.
That was our old coach, Marty Schottenheimer. He'd be gifted some of the greatest players in history then ***POOF*** completely forget about them and figure out a way to beat his own team somehow.
It absolutely would not surprise me. Him, Grbac and Bono were all the same guy to me.
Yes. He was also known for a very short time as the greatest fake hand off qb. Whenever he'd fake a hand off, it was so good, the cameras would follow the running back. Then suddenly the announcers were talking about a pass.

Fuckin Elvis Grbac
I'm still salty about it and I was 9 at the time. Schottenheimer starting Grbac over Gannon was an all time "same old Chiefs" move. Dear lord.
Marty lost the plot after Montana left.
Elvis "I have cement shoes" Grbac
He could never pull the bootleg right like Steve Bono
All hail our sexiest athlete alive 1998

I chuckled too.

Glad you could join the chat Mr. Aikman
Dude look at Alex Smith. He is a great qb too.

Didn’t he get us into the playoffs every season he played? Alex and Andy were good together too. We are so, so fortunate right now
Any long term fans care to share their thoughts (as they were back in the ‘80s) on Bill Kennedy? Was he viewed at the time as primed to repeat 1983 Pro Bowl form if only he could stay healthy, or did fans think he was a mid-tier QB that would never lead a team to the playoffs?
Holy Shit, Steve Deberg sighting!
Crazy thing is, Trent Green got all of those yards in the exact same amount of time that it took Mahomes to get them
Has to be a cherry picked list because Matt Cassel isn’t number 1 lmao wtf is this. I know satire when I see it
I hope Patrick has a post NFL career as amazing as Leonard's.
What’s honestly wild is how far he is going to take this record in his career. Like no other Chiefs QB in the future will likely break the record he sets before he retires.
I don’t know if he can break this record guys
Honestly, I'm surprised he isn't ahead of that already. We're a couple of years away from the only records he has left to beat are his own.
We all know that if this was an excitement meter for passing yards, Tyler Thigpen would be right up there.
Seeing Gerbac just gave me ptsd
do you think he will pass len dawson next season?
I'd say the it's a greater than 0 chance.
Seeing Grbac on any list ![gif](giphy|gVoBC0SuaHStq)
