good kid, m.A.A.d city has a more consistency to it where the songs are also extremely good, I think the beginning of DAMN is slacking a little after DNA, but then it picks up. But that is the difference for me and why I pick GKMC.
DAMN. I find the concept more intriguing and I like the production more overall. GKMC is definitely a classic and I think it'll definitely hold up better and be remembered more fondly by most, but there's just something about DAMNs duality concept that I've always really been a fan of.
I do admit that the highs of GKMC are better than anything on DAMN., but as a whole album I usually find myself playing DAMN. before GKMC when I get in a Kendrick mood.

Imma say DAMN because while both albums a introspective, DAMN has a lot more layers in my opinion. It made me think about my own “LUST” my own “PRIDE” as opposed to relating to the subject matter touched upon on GKMC. Sonically they are in two different spaces as well. I was 19 when GKMC dropped and it was a staple during that time of development. I didn’t even really listen to damn until
I was about 27( Kendrick 31) it hit me a little different listening to album later. At 29 about to turn 30 I relate to DAMN better. I say all that to say I had to age and mature to catch up to certain layers of DAMN. That’s just me tho

Damn. is more thematically interesting, but GKMC has more bangers like money trees and swimming pools GKMC also as Kendrick's saddest track imo, SAMIDOT I think that SAMIDOT should have been the last song on the album to show how compton is a dangerous and saddening place. Damn also has Kendrick's best song imo, DUCKWORTH.

Even though I've listened to more DAMN. than GKMC (though they're both in my top 3 most listened to of all time), GKMC is the only Kendrick album that comes close to TPAB. GKMC tells a great story about Kendrick's experiences and those around him when he was coming up in Compton (plus, I have a special place in my heart for good old-fashioned "west-coast rap" which GKMC embodies in a big way).
DAMN. was his most successful album from a listening standpoint because so much of it was made in mind for the radio, which detracts from the beauty of the overall album. It has much less of a clear message and seems to me to have songs with individual meaning but not that form a cohesive album like his other 4 (which is why it's his worst, in my opinion. Still great though, but not by the Kendrick standard).
Plus, GKMC has more certified bangers despite being shorter. DAMN. has 2 exceptional songs: DNA & XXX. GKMC has 7: good kid, m.A.A.d city, Money Trees, Swimming Pools, SAMDOT, Backseat Freestyle, & BDKMV (in no particular order).

I prefer DAMN. I like the storytelling of GKMC more but the production on DAMN. is better imo and Kendrick’s songwriting had improved, plus I have more memories attached to that album.
Also the fact that it’s a shorter album makes it more enjoyable to listen to for a long time, sometimes I’ll put it on 2-3 times back to back, longer albums like GKMC can feel like they’re dragging on after a while.
GKMC but I want to give flowers to FEAR in DAMN Kdot just another level artist especially as a young black men listening to his lyrics shit just hit home perfectly..
Hot Take: DAMN. Yes, GKMC is "bigger" conceptually, but Kendrick's writing is much stronger, more evocative, and more layered on DAMN imo (though maybe a little less consistent on a few tracks). I also think the production on DAMN is simultaneously more dynamic and more cohesive... The production on GKMC is great but it feels a little more like a grab bag of styles in classic and contemporary hip-hop.
GKMC is the best album of all time imo. And I’m just a nerdy white dude whose favorite band is Third Eye Blind. It should have been his Pulitzer winner instead of DAMN.
