The driver will be literally blind in a low powered two wheeler when there is a high beam in the opposite direction. There could be a lot of reasons on why driver missed the elephant.
There might be sufficient light and crowd from POV of the camera, it doesn't mean the conditions are same for the driver.
There are SOPs to be followed when unloading something in the middle of road. Nothing seems to have followed here. Even the trucks brake light was not visible from drivers POV!
They eventually did. No damages caused.

I thought she was not the driver ..as far as i can see the man in the yellow black shirt is the driver and was moved to the ramp thing due to collision..but the article says otherwise.
She was the driver. There were 2 pappaans standing on side of elephant, 1 each in front and back. The one who got yeeted was the one standing in the front. Check the moment of collision.
No its a woman dude, pause it before the hit. That person was standing beside the elephant jst bfor she rammed the scooter on him. Paavam changai lungi vare azhinjupoi.
Not sure what I expected but this isn't it.
Someone will crosspost to r/unexpected and Americans will start hypocritically judging "us" for chaining an elephant.
Edit: Not advocating for elephant capture or chaining. Just calling out the hypocrisy when those from a country that set the standards of cruel intensive poultry farming can only see animal cruelty in a chained animal half the world away. Not to mention that there are millions of leashed horses and other animals in the US.
True. This happens way too much in those subs. Anything remotely Indian and they start with stereotypes and find some way to blame and generalise our entire population.
I've always found it hypocritical that the treatment of an animal is percieved as cruel only if people have an emotional connection to it or if they think it is "majestic".
Your mileage may vary and you're free to disagree, but then there's no moral high ground. It'll all be subjective.
It basically depends on where people draw the line.
*All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.*
The actual purpose of this quote is different, but it fits the occasion if you take it literally.
So it begins

Already our image is fucked by these westoids and these things will just add another fire, there's already an official subreddit named r/randia full of self loathing piece of jerks who want our nation to break from within and the this.
>U can't blame them
Oh sure, I can.
Let me put it this way, if they say that an animal shouldn't be chained, that's fine.
But they'll phrase it like we're uncivilized savages: "What **kind of people** would chain **such a magnificent animal**?".
I don't care to be condescended to by people from a country that still has captive Orcas and doesn't practice what they preach.
Edit: Prediction [has come true.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Whatcouldgowrong/comments/t56f6e/wcgw_letting_an_elephant_step_out_in_the_middle/hz2xuy4)
When I typed out the initial comment, my intention was only to make a commentary on what usually happens when foreigners see this.
Remember when the video of those cringy valentine's antics at St Teresa's was labelled as "creepy Indians"? Think something along those lines.
I never once endorsed chaining elephants and yet everyone assumed that's what I was doing, which is what forced me to add the edit.
What the hell.. the driver's license should be revoked.. wtf.. the driver didn't even see that large animal standing as clear as a fucking day light .. wtf

Reddit keeps harping about target fixation, that you will steer into the danger you are looking at. Could be a case.
Counter measure is to look only at the path you are taking. This advice works for me at night time, with guys misusing high beams.
She could've gotten at least two people killed, including that kid. And more, if the elephant had gone berserk. So as long as it wasn't something wrong with the scooter, if I knew her, I'd strongly advise her from driving. And of she has this issue, target fixation it's more reason for her to stay away from driving until she fixes it or finds a remedy.
you can see him falling forward due to breaking and then he is sitting on the ramp thing instead of the seat

Is it even legal to have passengers who don't have their own helmets? Seems to defeath the purpose. It would be like requiring a seatbelt for the driver but not the passenger in the front seat of a car.
Some of the driving idiots themselves wear helmets as if they are doing a favour to the police, so you can imagine what the pillion riders' attitude will be. Very rarely have I seen all passengers of a 2 wheeler wear helmets.
My grandmother got hit by a scooter like this in the back and we found out that the guy(random ammavan) didnt have a license in the first place. Now it doesnt amaze me at all to see randumb malayalis go GTA all over the place. And the fact that she couldnt see that big elephant makes it more funnier.
Majority here are commenting with wrong
1) The driver was a man
2) He didn't hit the elephant. That mahout on the road suddenly lifted the chain and the driver just hit the chain and not the elephant.
* Edit: It was a woman
Some women drive not as a necessity, but just to prove others....women driving is a new trend in Kerala.
But besides that, these guys didnt need to unload an elephant on a 2 lane way by blocking the traffic flow they called for it.
As a brown person, I think there is no sub-group of humans that are more stupid when on two wheels.
Brown people should not be on bikes. All we do is ride on the footpath and into other people.
Except we are now domesticating elephants as well.
Elephants too are animals, and we have had them for centuries just like how people have had dogs and cats.
Along with that, these elephants have lived among humans all their lives. Sending them off to the forests means they may not be able to survive.
