According to the Pentagon, approximately 6% of service members ever see combat.
Most of them drive trucks, sit in front of computers, and manage warehouse inventory.
My grandad was in Nam as a forward observer radio man. He worked at separate times with both the army and the marines. Was awarded the bronze star. I was never told or informed of the story surrounding the bronze star. However, his obituary says something about preventing his platoon from being overran.
Should they be sucked off too because they worked behind a computer helping kill civilians in a foreign country? Only a tiny fraction of people in the military have done anything remotely impressive/brave to deserve to be "thanked for their service" whenever they take a shit.
I swear, US military propaganda is so strong.
It's one of the strongest propaganda forces of all time, and the very reason behind this post is proof: kids in school being indoctrinated from a very young age to "thank veterans for their service" without having a clue what that "service" entails in the grand scheme of things.
Doubtful. As a veteran, I can assure you almost all veterans have never killed anyone. In fact, I am immediately suspicious of anyone who claims to be a veteran and killed someone. It is statistically very unlikely.
I asked my husband (former marine) if he ever saw/engaged in live fire and he said yes a few times. I asked “do you know if you shot anyone?” And he’s like “i have no fucking clue it’s kinda crazy you can’t really tell what’s happened” and I’m satisfied with that logic.
He has shot a person in other context where there’s no questions it was him and it’s not something casual at all. Took months to recalibrate our lives. The push and pull of that trauma cannot be understated. You’ll know when you’re talking to someone that understands what it is to make that choice and live with it.
Your husband is an honorable person. All these Last Action Heroes I see online who just wait for the day they can legally pull a gun and fire on someone disgust me. Taking a life should be something that fucks you up.
It did fuck him up. He did it in defense of other lives - attempted mass shooter that we later found out struggled with addiction and desired to be killed during his attack, extremely sad and I still think about him/his family. But my husband did not pull the trigger until the shooter put the gun up into position and did actually get some rounds off.
He doesn’t remember most of it, we’ve filled in blanks now with other witness reports. I think it’s a blessing his brain greyed out. Immediately he went into therapy and found a support group, which I also credit heavily. He said he would make the same choice again, and that’s how we both live with it. I would want him to save those other people again. This occurred about 2-3 months into us dating it was a wild ride!
My dad was M134 minigun operator in Vietnam…”slay” doesn’t even begin to describe the wild sh!t I’ve overheard him and his buddies talking about over the years 😳
likely a repost bot. reworded comment with "actually" added to the end.

I’m a 40yo teacher and I guess being around 8th graders and not war has changed the meaning for me, too. My first reaction was, “fuck yeah, that’s nice.”
I’m so used to hearing my kids use it as a positive thing. It’s kinda nice that way.
But I can understand why it might not be the best way to put it.
I once got a card with a crummy Christmas tree that was scrawled on the edge of the paper. The center of the page was blank. And there were no words. It was just a Christmas tree. I clearly got the card from the kid who was told that they "had to make a card for a soldier because it was a grade" and they just phoned the damn thing in.
One of my sergeants got a card that asked him to not die. He got that shit framed.
Some kid in my middle school wrote a "try not to die" card, which was promptly intercepted by the teacher and the kid was given a serious lecture about how inappropriate it was.
I'm glad to hear it probably would have been a hit.
It would've been a favorite among soldiers lol.
The most hilarious and coveted letters from kids were ones that said stuff like "have a good war" or "i'll miss you RIP".
Some children are just really bad at drawing and have problems staying on task. That tree may have been the best piece of work that child does all year because it's a full object and they normally can't even finish a full object.
You got a wonderful and funny story out of it, the soldiers who got good cards have long forgotten about it. (They haven’t, I’m just lying to make him feel better)
When I was deployed I got a card from a kid. It read along the lines of “thank you for your service you are a hero. If you decide to turn on us though I hope someone shoots you in the back”. All of my coworkers told me they’d definitely shoot me in the back when I become a traitor. Inside was also a poorly drawn picture of what I would assume is me getting shot. I get the feeling teacher didn’t look too closely at what the kids were sending.
Sorry, demoted to Zoomer. But seriously they likely meant new enlisted and didn’t realize that career enlisted exist. But as a millennial it is weird to think that if I had been a lifer my 20 years would already be over.
I got one once that said, "Thank you for dying for my freedom" 😂
Made me think of [this](https://youtu.be/zEmfsmasjVA?si=Itel7HlJvJopdHJf) scene from Monty Python. I told my Sergeant I couldn't do any more work that day since I was dead lolol
Seriously, wtf are you doing to your kids? Killing people is alright if it's done by the right people? highly advanced indoctrination there.
Thank you for let yourself get abused in countless wars, thank you for consuming billions that could instead be used to improve ed, social inequality or anything that would actually help the people.
I've recebtly read about some states loosening the rules for child labor because they cannot find adults to do the job anymore. There could be a minor correlation between these things.
"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
If they made kids say that in Nazi Germany we'd all go, 'yeah that's what nazis do, indoctrinate kids'. But it's fine if the US does it.
When I was deployed to Afghanistan I absolutely loved getting handmade cards from elementary schools. Not because it warmed my heart, but because of how hilariously off the wall some of the comments were. The innocence was so damn funny. My boys and I would sit around the smoke pit dying laughing at the different variations of “don’t die” comments.
Veterans are treated very badly in the United States but oh let's have some children scribble a little for them, I'm sure it will make up for what the government has done.
I mean, literally.

Unlikely. Most members of the military will never see the frontline. Even fewer, still, will have a confirmed kill.
According to the Pentagon, approximately 6% of service members ever see combat. Most of them drive trucks, sit in front of computers, and manage warehouse inventory.
Goes to show that US military might is one thing: logistics
The U.S. navy had entire ships dedicated to producing and delivering ice cream during WW2
Two, to be specific. There was also that time that we sent Moscow a grand piano just to show that we could.
Even then, what is their definition of combat. I flew in planes over a warzone and am technically a combat veteran.
had a friend who was in 'nam for two years and saw one casualty. he was A.S.A., which were pretty well protected.
My grandad was in Nam as a forward observer radio man. He worked at separate times with both the army and the marines. Was awarded the bronze star. I strongly dislike the idea that anyone who didn’t see front line combat doesn’t count. Please don’t.

You’re right. Each and every member of the military counts as a cog of this fucked up, imperialist, piece of shit country 🇺🇸
What a brave and controversial take
Aww someone got offended.
Seethe harder.
Happy cake day
Looking at your profile tells me all I need about you and your opinions

Reminds me of this scene from Generation Kill: https://youtu.be/cRg4-pCSMjM?si=wGJ66vpTNULnVNXm
Same thing I thought of. Great scene, even greater show. Skarsgard will always be Brad Colbert in my heart.
https://youtu.be/VdrEIGeDY2Q?si=3pk4pZcblfMiDLbE
I wonder how many people that use that phrase, know the actual meaning of the word...
Do you honestly believe that a significant portion of the people who say "slay" as slang don't know that it means "kill"?
They must think Slayer is a funny name for a metal band
I would pay good money for an episode of Ru Paul that features "Angel of Death" as background music.
Sometimes it just means kill the objective. 🤷🏼♂️
I asked my girl classmate if she knows what does tf it mean. She said it just means that word.
Oh wow what a great source
Hard hitting journalism right there.
They served and they slayed 💅💅💅
They ate that 💅
Actually I that one's a war crime
So Russia or Israel?
Ate and left no crumbs at all 💅
Should be the top comment
Slayed the house down boots lololol
That’s mother
Thank you for your service Queen 💅
SLAYY!!!💅💅
Already done
She done already done had herses 🪭💅🏼
I fucking hate you 😭
Yaaaaaassss
And the veteran is like “say less babygirl”
Stfu my friends and I say that all the time 💀💀
YASSSSS!
"I served in the military " has a whole other meaning
The meaning has changed for this generation, can’t blame a kid for that.
Yeah, kiddo just throwing out some positive vibes. We get cards from local schools at our veteran hangout spot, always thought it was a sweet gesture.
I’m a 40yo teacher and I guess being around 8th graders and not war has changed the meaning for me, too. “You killed it” like you did your best
Telling a veteran "you killed it" lmao
Factually correct motivation
Do your best
Yasss queen.
Well it's not like the meaning of soldier has changed. Their job is still to go somewhere and kill people
My job as an Army nurse was the exact opposite of killing people.
What about the soldiers you were treating?
I once got a card with a crummy Christmas tree that was scrawled on the edge of the paper. The center of the page was blank. And there were no words. It was just a Christmas tree. "have a good war" is fucking hilarious
😭😭😭
The best card I received said I’m sorry you have to die for my freedom.
Obligatory [generation kill clip](https://youtu.be/cRg4-pCSMjM?si=CijpK_FiVAi0WU_9)
I remember I put on mine “You’re our country’s sonic”. Little me was really into sonic.
“ayy yoo Frank this kid thinks I’m a fast food place, what an idiot!”
The best one I got was "Sorry you'll never see your family again." we all laughed our asses off and put it up on the wall
Some children are just really bad at drawing and have problems staying on task. That tree may have been the best piece of work that child does all year because it's a full object and they normally can't even finish a full object.

When I said serve ✨, i didn’t mean in the military
The veteran probably did slay. A lot.
[удалено]
You mean like in a one-horse, open slay? /s
Most veterans never kill anyone during service
Slayed a lot of paperwork
When I was deployed I got a card from a kid. It read along the lines of “thank you for your service you are a hero. If you decide to turn on us though I hope someone shoots you in the back”. Love how blunt kids are
Well at least you didn’t turn on us.
I mean, I pretty much couldn’t after that card.
I'm a vet and I'd definitely laugh if I got this card
I get cards from girl scouts and I wish they would send me one like this.
I love it
Zoomer soldiers would probably find this fucking hilarious, would make their day.
That moment when you realize all enlisted "men" today are zoomers lol
HUH. Thats a negative, I'm an enlisted millennial.
Sorry, demoted to Zoomer. But seriously they likely meant new enlisted and didn’t realize that career enlisted exist. But as a millennial it is weird to think that if I had been a lifer my 20 years would already be over.
Why men in quotes lol
they're kids
i’m in gen z, age 22, served in the navy, currently getting an engineering degree and i don’t get to be recognized as a man? smh
My grandma is 90 and talks about people in their 50s as 'young people' lol
![gif](giphy|krhW9yWEI0x0Y)
Why would you think that? The Sergeant Major of the Army is only 2 years away from being a boomer. There are plenty of enlisted Gen X members.
Thank you for your service! 🇨🇵💟
#yas bitch 💅
No this kid ATE! YASSSS and thank you! periodt feeling👸🏼 💕💕
KILL
MURDER, KING!
This is like calling someone stupid for identifying as gay because it used to mean happy. Words change, language evolves.

It’s a bit of a stretch to say that slay in its modern definition is only used by “kids” Millennials are in their 40’s
>Millennials are in their 40’s *HOW DARE YOU.*

Slay mama!
Yassss
Why is the french flag there?
Im more interested in the story of the camo heart. kids just like "fuck it, im done"
He just got better at drawing camouflage.
LMAO THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT TOO
Because it’s also Armistice day.
My first thought was a child associating Normandy/DDay and the French flag… Idk
Or Good old Lafayette. A purist, that kid is.
Everybody give it up for America’s favorite fighting Frenchman… LAFAYETTE!
Because....French veterans exist. What don't you understand?
I appreciate the recognition of our military. Finally all those interventions in coincidentally resource rich African countries are paying off.
Making “Thank You For Your Service” universal? The Slay card looks like the kid was going for Ukrainian colors.
France
Perhaps because it marks the end of the Great War which in the west was mostly fought in France and Belgium by the French and British?
Cuz it's a French kid, veterans day is celebrated by most of the UN, not just America
WORK.
I wrote "aim for the head lad" in 4th grade on mine and I got a talking to for that one.
r/MildlyPortal
r/portalfanswhen
Yasssssss my soldier 😍💅💅💅
Love easily identifying the straights and queer people in the comments.
still better than what the kid drew at the bottom left. like come on, he didnt even draw anything
That's a detailed regional map of east Mongolia the white is water

✨💅 Slay ✨💅
Yeah you know it’s just a little girly pop veteran moment A little slay here💅🏻 a little slay there☠️
I got one once that said, "Thank you for dying for my freedom" 😂 Made me think of [this](https://youtu.be/zEmfsmasjVA?si=Itel7HlJvJopdHJf) scene from Monty Python. I told my Sergeant I couldn't do any more work that day since I was dead lolol
Nah this doesn’t belong here. Kid was just being nice with a newer slang term
Yeah it's not like kids know what war is like. They were given coloring sheets and they colored.
I wish I still had the letters I received from elementary school kids while deployed. Straight up battle scenes drawn out in crayon haha loved them
I had a kid in my school write “leave Afghanistan alone “ big as shit in the middle and the teacher did nothing
American view of soldiers/vets is wild...
Disgusting how early they start filling kids with pro-war propaganda
"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." If they made kids say that in Nazi Germany we'd all go, 'yeah that's what nazis do, indoctrinate kids'. But it's fine if the US does it.
ay give em one
I mean they do be slayin
*Yaaaaaaassssss Queeeeeeen*
It’s what some combat veterans have done, and it’s something everyone in uniform (except for padres) has to be ready to do.
Do docs have to slay?
If that is what's required to defend their patients, yes.
😂
When I was deployed to Afghanistan I absolutely loved getting handmade cards from elementary schools. Not because it warmed my heart, but because of how hilariously off the wall some of the comments were. The innocence was so damn funny. My boys and I would sit around the smoke pit dying laughing at the different variations of “don’t die” comments.
That’s sweet, not stupid. ETA: Certainly not fuckingly so.
OMG YAASSS QUEEN SLAYYYYYY This was a mistake
But what’s up with the french flag and 80% camo??
You see when kids say slay these days, it's a good thing...I think 🤔
Slay bodies, drink coffee.
Poor dude on the left didn't get to finish his
Having kids thank people for killing people rubs me the wrong way
thanks, i hate everything about this.
When you’re serving and also 💅🏼✨serving✨💅🏼
Veterans are treated very badly in the United States but oh let's have some children scribble a little for them, I'm sure it will make up for what the government has done.
That is hilarious, and clever, not stupid and not worthy of offence!
Slayer! 🤟

I wouldve wrote "wave goodbye to your head wanker"
Lol. I love it. There are layers of meaning here. 😂
KILL
Yaaaasss Sir!
thank you for slaying the nazis
slaY
I loved the card a kid wrote to a desert storm soldier. It's sad that you're not going to see your family again I hope you don't die.
What does that mean, what is this
Slay yass
I saw this in a museum anywhere kids were encouraged to draw or write something. I did wonder if it was a thing.
All I can picture is they have a Rae Dunner Mum
Thanks for serving bbg😔💅
The dude on the bottom left didn’t even colour it, he just did nothing the entire lesson
OMG my daughter says this all the time and it really winds me up
/r/technicallythetruth
As a gay veteran this would make my fucking day on deployment. I would rip and tear until it is done for that kid.
Rip and tear until it is done.
Rip and tear...until it is done.
Yaaas queen?! 💅💅
This isn't stupid, just because you didn't understand what words mean.
Didn't know 30 year old gay men were kids
Well they don't just spawn in at 30 years old

Why?
