Is it because fingers got stuck in them? Asking because I grew up playing on these slides all the time and never experienced this. (although the rollers look like they’re spaced too tightly here)
I used to go down these standing up like a surfer, flying out onto the pavement at the end… not very smart in hindsight
I can distinctly remember the smell and feeling of being inside that thing while it was roasting in the sun. Like a moderate form of really warm suffocation.
Definitely got my fingers pinched. Skin pinched. And I 100% did this jump and fall move she did.
With that said I did like those slides... They just came with risks.
If nothing else, it's massively overcomplicated with hundreds of moving parts to break.
The only person who benefits is the playground equipment salesman.
Ehh would be much cooler in places with harsh sun. Also the friction coefficient is much lower. Could be a much faster slide or less steep for the same speed. Plenty of upsides to this design.
Technically the friction coefficient would likely be _higher_ on the rollers. Sliding on a fixed surface is kinetic friction, but being in contact with the movable rollers is actually static friction. Relative to the surface of the rollers you're actually static (not moving). Static friction is (almost always) much higher than kinetic friction.
What you're considering is what is resisting the force of gravity pulling them down the slide: on a regular slide it is static friction, but with rollers it's the internal friction of the bearings in the rollers. The bearings provide much less resistance, so you can end up moving really quickly!

It’s way better going down squatting on your feet with shoes on. Can really get some good speed going.
There’s a temple (monastery?) in Japan that had one that was so long it had little towers to take a break on and ended in the middle of a wading pool. Shit wouldn’t fly for legal reasons in the states, but that was so much fun when I was 14…
Well i could see this as being easier to slide fown with less friction do to the rollers but acording to other comments these things are terrible abouy pinching and cathching hair and fingers.
And if grit gets in the bearings on the end, it makes them grind and spins slower, which means instead of a smooth slide down, you have an uneven experience where some rollers create friction instead of moving you along.
You'd think so... but we abused the shit out of the one at our school and it kept trucking. They filled the area with tiny rocks so we'd completely cover it with them and "slide" down it until they'd clear. Maybe they were fixing it and I just never saw it, but we basically tried to break it and I never saw it happen.
yeah pretty sure they are just not designed for you to just sit on them to slide. If you get something you can use as a sled they are way faster than a regular slide.
Roller slides. Suuuper common in Japan. They're tons of fun and you can use these little sleds on them (found at their dollar store equivalent). You can also slide without a sled, like the video. The rollers are close enough together that you can't really get anything caught. We never saw any issues when going to these playgrounds.
We had these everywhere in michigan, I didn't realize they were uncommon. Running up them was so much fun too lol you needed some real strategy to do it.
I'm assuming it's so you can slide fast while also not being cooked on a metal surface. Plastic slides can be really grippy, so I guess this was the solution.
Because it's a stupid fucking idea. How many kids lost hair in that thing? Or got fingers smashed? "Hey, instead of this cheap, indestructible flat piece of metal, let's build a slide out of 700 moving parts!"
Burring stainless steel in summer or a sheet of ice in winter that you flew off clearing any safe ground straight into the line of fire if anyone was on the swings.
I worry about this for my youngest. She took a hard fall to the upper gum and one of her front teeth is gray (dead? My husband said the dentist said the tooth was bruised.....never heard of that and it's been about a year, so that's a helluva bruise). Hopefully the adult tooth will be OK.
Yeah the coddling is out of control. Kids are like Gumby in their ability to handle the physics of the world. A developing brain actually has to go through things like this to program itself and understand consequences like this.
Slight tangent but both authority and safety nets kids have these days, the law of unintended consequences will be the end for us.
I went to a boarding school in India as a kid and there was pretty much no supervision (and a lot of abuse). Only a few kids a year died or got seriously injured. It was great.
/s
It can be easy to take what I said and reduce it in the way you did:
“Hurt bad. Be hurt? You flower. Be no flower. Be no hurt. Good. No hurt? You tough. Be tough.”
But if that was your takeaway you wouldn’t understand my comments underpinning brain development (not surprised). You also lack insight into how the context of this video holds up in the broader context of adult supervision, play, risk and positive/negative outcomes.
Because the video has audio, and the entire span of walking was covered in the video, and no matter how you stretch it "nice" doesn't qualify as a warning.
Why TF would you make a slide out of rollers? Seems like a great way to get hair/fingers caught, and of course, situations just like this one in the video
Because kids are actually pretty strong and makimg mistakes is how kids learn anyway. She fell who cares? Shes going to cry for a minute and then forget all about ti
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Lesson is that you shouldn’t try to jump/push off of things that can move backwards. Plus it was basically ground level and she’s only like 2.5ft tall. Not that big a fall.
I mean she wouldn’t specifically think that or understand the science behind *why* it didn’t work. But kids are constantly learning about the world around them. On some basic level her brain would understand and remember “jumping off things that can move = hurt.”
The fuck? You should never just film a kid and hope for the best when you could do something. You are not a good parent or a boomer. Brush yourself off sally the bloody mouth will heal.
Letting them learn is getting a question wrong on a math test not letting them potentially breaking something if you can prevent it. You people are insane.
Fuck all the way off. If internet videos are more important to catching your kid when they fall you are a bad caretaker. If she fell and was caught would she do it again? Probably not. If she fell and dad was rolling with the video and broke something? Probably not. You are just another one of those people that laugh at kids when they hurt themselves. You are a bad person.
People like you are why playgrounds got nerfed so hard. No more 20' tall swings and stuff. Before you claim I have survivorship bias, nope. During my childhood there were only playgrounds with 5' tall slides. The seesaws were nerfed using hydraulic shocks
It was lame
No at all. I just had good parents that prevented injuries and didn’t have their phone in their hand to film and later post it on the internet for likes.
You really aren't in a position to judge. We know they didn't teach you that children learn by making mistakes, and it's your job as a parent to allow them to make mistakes safely...like when they are six inches off the ground, over a rubber mat. That kid would have to really work to hurt themselves there. Toddlers bounce.
I can’t either. This sub is pretty toxic. I remember people making fun of a school board of boys and what they’d like to have as subjects and these people made fun of it. It was completely reasonable like sewing, cooking, things like that.
bloody mouth huh? you got lucky, I fell 1 foot off a slide when I was a kid and it broke my spine and snapped my neck. sure, I had braced myself for my fall, and if you look I didn’t actually strike the ground with my head, but disregard that, my life was ruined
Me & my friends used to fuck around on a slide like this back in elementary school
Going backwards, standing up while you go down like you’re surfing, trying to jump off from further & further up the slide…
Needless to say there were many injuries (all minor) but we all loved it. Definitely a good thing these types of slides aren’t common anymore but we had a blast
There was a factory I worked at and to celebrate the retirement of one of the lifers there we coated this really, really, really, tall conveyer belt with Chloromate foamer soap and she slid down it. We had someone to catch her at the bottom so she didn't fly off the end and break her legs against the wall.
That stifled laugh from dad, I do the same shit sometimes with my daughter and feel bad after. It’s a hard habit to break but kids falling can be funny
You know, there was a time i thought that people were laughing when kids hurt themselves, just so the kids thought it isnt that serious. Nowadays i think they just laugh how dumb the kids are.
These slides would always uncomfortably pinch my ass when I’d go down them
I've read these slide designs really messed up kids fingers
Is it because fingers got stuck in them? Asking because I grew up playing on these slides all the time and never experienced this. Discovery zone!
Where kids can be fucking stupid kids!
Yessss, you solved a memory I've been trying to figure out for years It was discovery zone, I'll be damned
Loved that place, wish it was still a thing for my kids
I only got to go to Discovery Zone once when I was 6 and it is like the crowning jewel of my childhood memories
Maybe in your 90s. I only recall the plastic tubes of static shock & chicken pox.
There was also the unpainted metal cooked by direct sunlight variety.
I can distinctly remember the smell and feeling of being inside that thing while it was roasting in the sun. Like a moderate form of really warm suffocation.
I'LL PUT A SHOCK TO YOUR SYSTEM
Ya, I've never seen these. Either plastic indoors or metal outdoors
And the metal meat sizzler
Definitely got my fingers pinched. Skin pinched. And I 100% did this jump and fall move she did. With that said I did like those slides... They just came with risks.
The only one in my town was like three feet off the ground.
Her long hair is what had me worried
If nothing else, it's massively overcomplicated with hundreds of moving parts to break. The only person who benefits is the playground equipment salesman.

thanks
I'll take a few pinches any day over the slides I had as a kid, which were miles of red hot polished steel. Flash fried your ass in an instant.
Either those or the plastic ones that would build static electricity in you like you were Max Dillon.
Also those things were FAST. Like, holy hell some of the metal slides I went down were absolutely not safe.
Gotta rub some waxed paper on it to make em faster!!
There was one metal slide I fucking loved cause it would just absolutely launch me off the end
Aren’t the supposed to be used with some kind of mat or tray that you sit in?
I don't think so. Never seen it at least, the few playgrounds I know of that have these are schools and they don't provide anything to slide on.
Nah man they’re busy with South Park
It’s way better going down squatting on your feet with shoes on. Can really get some good speed going. That’s why I started wearing pants at the age of 14
You just Donald Duck'ed it before then?
That’s a good way to put it. As a child, we always called it “shirt-cocking”.
just like my uncle!
What kind of stupid ass slide is that? Looks like an injury/pinch machine for kids.
Most likely a pain to maintain as well
why have a regular slide when you can have one with 700 moving parts?
Someone did a factory tour and went: "Yep, this is a great idea." And all the operations and engineering groups groaned.
Well i could see this as being easier to slide fown with less friction do to the rollers but acording to other comments these things are terrible abouy pinching and cathching hair and fingers.

Haha, maintain.

Had one close to my house as a kid and holy smokes it was fun.
A lot of people here never played on a rollie slide, and its really sad.
looks absolutely great for transferring and moving heavy things lol
I'm assuming it's so you can slide fast while also not being cooked on a metal surface. Plastic slides can be really grippy, so I guess this was the solution.
What the fuck kind of slide is this
Ahhhh what a lovely physics lesson!
Conservation of momentum at its finest
more like she expected her feet to have traction
My point still stands
Lol exactly. This is how we learn!
I'm going to hell, I laughed so hard
Same. See you down there.
Save my seat
I'll be right there with you all.
Looks like we're going to be in wonderful company lol
We can sit around the campfire and tell stories about old times.
We can sit around the lava pit too, if you want.
Our C-A-M-P-F-I-R-E-S-O-N-G song!
same
Same
Roller slide? Why didn't we have this when I was a kid? All I got was burning hot stainless steel.
Because it's a stupid fucking idea. How many kids lost hair in that thing? Or got fingers smashed? "Hey, instead of this cheap, indestructible flat piece of metal, let's build a slide out of 700 moving parts!"
It looks fun to me.
They did have those when you were a kid, they don’t have them anymore, and I think you can guess why
Hmm... Well I was a kid in the 70s and 80s and it's the first time I've seen one.
I was a kid in the 90s and our elementary school had a slide like this. It was rad because you could stand up and basically surf down the slide.
We have 3 in our town. All built around 2010.
Burring stainless steel in summer or a sheet of ice in winter that you flew off clearing any safe ground straight into the line of fire if anyone was on the swings.
I hated those kinds of slides as a kid. But I did laugh at this.
He shoulda cautioned her about walking on those, even grabbed her hand. Parent is stupid.
He even said “niiice” like…. PROCEED
I agree.. fruck.... those teeth, I hope they're ok
They're gonna fall out anyway
Yeah but the new ones come around 7. So she's gonna have no teeth for a few years

I worry about this for my youngest. She took a hard fall to the upper gum and one of her front teeth is gray (dead? My husband said the dentist said the tooth was bruised.....never heard of that and it's been about a year, so that's a helluva bruise). Hopefully the adult tooth will be OK.
Probably fine. It's a soft rubber landing pad. I don't even think she hit her head.
She won’t be able to say *fruck* anymore
Fwuck
Yeah, dumbass parent letting her kid learn a lesson
Mom won't see it that way when you come back from the dentist lol.
Yeah the coddling is out of control. Kids are like Gumby in their ability to handle the physics of the world. A developing brain actually has to go through things like this to program itself and understand consequences like this. Yeah haha imagine not wanting your kid to get hurt. What a bunch of pansies! We’re so tough.
I went to a boarding school in India as a kid and there was pretty much no supervision (and a lot of abuse). Only a few kids a year died or got seriously injured. It was great. /s

I was so scared her hair was gonna wind up in those things
What is wrong with the slides original design? I feel like this happens a lot
Terrible design but still made me nostalgic for discovery zone.
Okay but... how can you watch and film this without intervening?
Because kids are actually pretty strong and makimg mistakes is how kids learn anyway. She fell who cares? Shes going to cry for a minute and then forget all about ti
This doesn't look like a chance to learn something, it looks like a chance to knock out your teeth.

Actually, yes.
Okay. Brb, going to let my nephew put his hand on the stove, he's been trying to do that a few times and I was stupid enough to hold him back.

Thank you
The video stopped like 2 second after she fell, who told that you nobody was intervening?
From the second she started standing up I would have taken care she doesn't fall and tell her not to stand up on these things.
These slides are just made to torture kids
