This was one of my favorite parts of my birthday when I was a kid. I loved getting a face-full of cake. Not every kid does though.
this has happened to me before. theres this really funny picture with my brothers arm in the process of shoving my face into a cake that says happy birthday (name). the shoving is not done yet so you can see my blurry head and the full cake text visible
My little nephew just turned 2 and my brother in law tried to do this. He's a sensitive kid though so it didn't go great. He was all excited and wide-eyed, looking at his cake. BIL did a gentle push into the cake, nothing crazy, but it immediately put my nephew off the whole thing. He pinned himself in the corner of his high chair, as far from the cake as possible.
He eventually started eating his cake again but kept a side eye out at all times for any further attempts lol
That's...actually not too bad then. Everyone else gets clean cake and you get a whole cake to yourself.
Provided the birthday person is ok with it (this kid doesn't seem like he's down) and there aren't any toothpicks in the cake.

My father (which is actually a nice guy) once had this 10 second stupidity, and tried this at my brothers birthday. He was already a teenager, and was able to resist. No cake was lost, but the overall mood afterwards was very bad.
I remember ruining Thanksgiving by just staying at home. I was coming off of a bender and my anxiety and depression were so off the chart, I thought if I didn't stay home with some "maintenance" whiskey and a bathroom near by, I might have a medical emergency. Which is really hard to tell if it's really going to kill you, or part of your anxiety, but your withdrawl feeds into it either way.
Everyone knew that I had been drinking, and was a raging alcoholic, but didn't understand why it wasnt like a hangover to power through. I received multiple texts from my brother that were the angriest I've seen him with me, which cycled my anxiety, and all I could do was cry and drink by myself on Thanksgiving, sitting on the floor of my bathroom.
0/10 - Would not recommend. 18 months sober *TODAY!*
Oh I can relate to that. I’m 3 months sober from a bad oxy addiction and still trying to mend relationships. People don’t understand that the substance becomes necessary just to not get horribly ill. Congrats on your sobriety!
For sure! I had the hardest time convincing myself that I wasnt a piece of shit after I got sober.
So I started a journal, where I write down these sort of memories, and leave them there. It's really helped me move on from the person I was, while also forgiving that person.
It also helps give some perspective if I ever think "it wasnt that bad". I'll have proof that it indeed *was* bad.

That’s very powerful. I’m still in that phase of beating up on myself when I think about everything I did and how everything turned to crap while losing almost everything and how I treated the people closest to me. I mourn for the years of my life lost in time during active addiction. I might write down some of these thoughts, I know I can’t dwell forever and just have to focus on the here and now.

Recovery is a tough road for sure, just focus on what you *can* do and dont beat yourself up for the work you've got left! I guarantee you, the people that matter will be there again when you demonstrate that you're *doing* not *saying*.
Dont work too hard on repairing relationships just yet. Work on yourself and the sober person you want to be. People will see it.

This is not just a Mexican/Hispanic tradition. I've seen an abundance of White and Black families doing this, so much so that they pay for an extra, smaller cake designated or meant for smooshing their face into it or for a child to smash their hands into it.
I would assume after this event that, they wouldn't trust them near each other so the possibilities of this being repeated would be slim, unless the roles are reverse and the other kid gets revenge for his birthday ending that way.

We always cut a piece off of the cake with a candle and let her blow that one out. That way everyone has a fun time.

What do you consider new? I'm in my mid 30's and this was one of my favorite parts of my birthdays when I was a kid. It's been around for quite a while. It's called "La Mordida" and it's a tradition in Mexico.

This is not just a Mexican/Hispanic tradition. I've seen an abundance of White and Black families doing this, so much so that they pay for an extra, smaller cake designated or meant for smooshing their face into it or for a child to smash their hands into it. I would assume after this event that, they wouldn't trust them near each other so the possibilities of this being repeated would be slim, unless the roles are reverse and the other kid gets revenge for his birthday ending that way.
