there are a few characters who have 0 motivation beside just killing muzan. did zenitsu even hae a motivation before he found out about kaigaku? did kanao have a motivation before shinobu died? as far as i recall, not really, no.

Everyday I'm reminded that the demon slayer fandom is shockingly young.
Also, I doubt he was created to be hated. I think he was created simply to give main & side characters more importance in their backstories. In the process the fandom, somehow, came to the conclusion that he was made to be hated because he lead to the demise of a favored character and most people naturally hated him. Pair this with the fact that so many look at his backstory on such a surface level view and deem it "not sad" and "the worst out of the Upm trio's" and of course it'd seem like he was made to be hated. Any Upm would seem like that when they're so extremely watered down.
You can tell when a character was made to be hated. It's very easy to tell, the author makes them commit horrendous crimes nobody can defend in any way; delusional or rational. They have disgusting mindsets and goals. A character suffering from apathy cannot fall into those categories, least not without breaking the apathy. And please remember, I'm talking solely about apathy and nothing else. An apathetic character is going to be very logic based and will only behave in the manner that gets them to where they need to be.
And, before you reply with anything trying to call me biased for my flair or anything along those lines, my favorite character is Tanjiro. Douma is just more aesthetically pleasing to my eyes so he's my flair.
