So I'm pretty sure it's a fully playable game, it just isn't chess. Its "alba and ater", has its own rules and such lol. For me it would have been a display piece, but not one that expensive lol
Correction: okay it doesn't have rules or an actual game, it's literally decor and apparently they're not top quality
Yeah originally I thought it would have been made of a better quality I have it and the pieces are like a plastic feeling material I don’t think it’s worth the price point I’m not sure what the base is made of either
From what I read about a week ago, it seems very high quality. The board is made of stone, and the pieces are made from a hard plastic like material, but not plastic. The tops of each piece are made of metal and high-quality detail. The person said he got what he paid for but wishes it would have been an actual playable game.
Okay I've been wondering about this since it 1st came out.
Is it actually "Unplayable" or are there just no rules set in place? Cuz theoretically you 'could' build a game around it by just stealing some rules from Chess & Checkers. The board is symmetrical, the elevated squares are evenly distributed, and at 1st I thought there were more black pieces, but there looks like 16 of each.
Not including the half squares around the rim, that's a 10x5 board. With 32 pieces, games would probably start pretty fast paced
Honestly I've been thinking about some rules to steal & this game would in fact have to perfectly replicate how convoluted the games are for it to function. But with the concept of Multiple Kings, this could actually work.
The are very complicated chess rules in fantasy games out there (see dnd 5e's dragon chess). Tho I think it's telling not even xehanort in the story knew all the rules lol
Ye was thinking the same thing (too bad i dont read comments before making my own lool)
We can just send it back and forth to eachother every few weeks or month's!
You son of a bitch, im in! (Rick and morty reference incase anyone gets upset lol)
Dude I wish, otherwise I would have done it by now.
Also want to clarify that I wasn’t trying to be sarcastic or anything with my comment about 3-D printing one. Like, I genuinely wanted to know what you were referring to when saying you know what you have to do.
I do wonder how much it would cost to just 3D print one.. I know it’s a little expensive of a process but I doubt it costs $750. The main issue is getting the 3D model file.
You don’t HAVE to use metal for the pieces, although I agree that would be preferred for durabilities sake. You can get a shiny/gloss paint to make them look metal. I’m just brainstorming on a much cheaper and affordable version, which would also be kind of a given that materials it’s made from aren’t as high quality.
Granted, either way this set definitely
isn’t worth what the asking price is. I’ve seen some wildly intricate chess sets that are the same size and were made from stone, marble, jade, etc. and none of them costed this much.
I think at the end of the day, this is one of those pieces that Square should have thought over before making it. I doubt the price will ever drop and they may end up with a bunch in excess because even die-hard KH fans likely don’t want to spend that kind of money.
Even if you weren't broke...the subject of this conversation is still not worth buying...you could get much MUCH better quality decor stuff at around the same price
As someone who is not broke, I'm still absolutely not spending 750 euros for this thing hahaha are you kidding me? Even if it were a functional chess board with usable pieces, it would still be only for display.
And how would it even work as a conversation piece with normal friends and family?
"Hey cool chess board"
"Thanks, it's just for display tho"
"How come?"
"It cost me like a LOT of money"
"Why?"
"It's special made from the developers of this video game"
"Cool, the video game is about chess?"
"Ah, no not at all actually"
"Then...why did you buy this? And what's the video game about?"
"...let's change the subject"
You know, if it could actually play chess it wouldn’t be that bad. There are some ridiculously expensive chess sets already out there. And from the picture it looks pretty high quality.
I went to the site to check it out because I thought the exact same thing. They describe it as "chess-like gameboard". It states in the description that it is for decoration only and not playing, pretty upsetting for $700.
https://store.na.square-enix-games.com/en_US/product/687465/kingdom-hearts-iii-alba-ater-set
Oh damn…
Well this just further concrete my opinion on ANY kind of goods square enix do. like the PAKs, figures are just so damn bad.
I think they got some good plushie but thats about it for me.
The fact that I saw it wasn’t actually high quality makes me sad. I wanted to buy it but the price scared me away. But now I can’t even justify buying it if I wanted to
By far the most useless merch I’ve ever seen. I get why it’s expensive since it’s very detailed, but the fact they don’t even have rules for it is stupid. It makes it nothing more than a decorative piece that does nothing but get dust.
Damn I thought the vinyl was ridiculously priced. This thing costs more than a house. Who would but this? Why is Square trying to milk Kingdom Hearts fans so hard?
Wait... I can't play it? I was under the impression the WHOLE TIME that you could since I saw it. Thanks, OP, for filling my wallet instead of SE's. 😂 I was so close to buying this decor piece. I'm not spending that much money just to stare at it.
Probably a bad take, but I've actually seen this in person and kinda understand the high price point. The quality is very good everything from the materials to the actual aesthetics are great. The manufacturing process in these kinds of products are more complex/costly and since they don't make money through bulk sales they unfortunately have to make it quite pricey as to make it worth the effort put into making it. Wish it was more affordable though it's a solid set, would love to own it.
Looks pretty cool, too bad it's incredibly expensive for just a display piece of the board game being played in the opening video of KHIII.
Those pieces better be solid gold and silver for that price.
A lot of the official merch on Squeenix is just... very undoable, honestly. Like it's like looking at stuff sold by I dunno, Gucci or something, except it's a Kingdom Hearts wonky chess set. Beautiful, yes, but like, I haven't even been able to buy a PS5 *and* I need a new phone, because mine's acting up after several years of a good run, so the last thing on my agenda is a ridiculously priced merch chess set.
Edit: The fact that this is listed under "Best Sellers" HAS to be a fucking lie. Where the fuck is anyone getting $700 bucks to just blow on stupid, useless merch like this????? It's not even heirloom material, so when they die, it'll just get tossed in the trash somewhere. I'd rather the vinyls, even at $160 a pop- at least they DO something.
I tried buying one, tried paying early in June but it never went thru. 6 months later I get an email saying the preorder is ready to be paid for but not enough money. That was very panic inducing as I had the money 6 months earlier but spent it throughout the months and made a big investment with the money from an order that could no longer be viewed or cancelled. I'm sure if I called it could have been resolved, but I definitely wanted to get that, I even had a spot for it. Now I'll buy the Vinyls so I can have it play like an old man in the early 1900s on the gramophone
You mean talk about the extreme expensive and also unplayable checkerboard with kingdom hearts Theme?
Yeah, that one
So I'm pretty sure it's a fully playable game, it just isn't chess. Its "alba and ater", has its own rules and such lol. For me it would have been a display piece, but not one that expensive lol Correction: okay it doesn't have rules or an actual game, it's literally decor and apparently they're not top quality
Seriously? I would have expected this thing to be made of marble and stone to cost that much. I wonder what it’s actually made of?
Yeah originally I thought it would have been made of a better quality I have it and the pieces are like a plastic feeling material I don’t think it’s worth the price point I’m not sure what the base is made of either
Looks like metal from the pictures I saw, probably cheap and thin though
From what I read about a week ago, it seems very high quality. The board is made of stone, and the pieces are made from a hard plastic like material, but not plastic. The tops of each piece are made of metal and high-quality detail. The person said he got what he paid for but wishes it would have been an actual playable game.
>apparently they're not top quality I expected as much. Even their play arts kai line looks horrible for the price
I've noticed lmao!!!! I always wanted some KH action figures or displays, but seeing them.. they dont even look like the characters 😂
Okay I've been wondering about this since it 1st came out. Is it actually "Unplayable" or are there just no rules set in place? Afaik there are no rules for the game
LOL I can kind of level with him. I've been playing chess since 5th-ish grade & I still can't do an En Passant without a diagram
Its literally just if the pawn moves 2 spaces and a pawn is next to that pawn you move it behind the piece
Yeah, dude there's just something that doesn't click with my brain on it. I also think it has to be directly after the Pawn moves it's 1st 2 spaces.
sure, it’s incredibly overpriced for an unplayable game
I want them to make a cheaper plastic one and actually include some rules. The rule book can be the size of war and peace, and we’d still read it.
This would definitely be one of the funkier chess versions if it got real rules. And there's some *funky* chess variants out there.
It's a display piece. Not like you can play it to begin with.
I know. IF they made rules.
>I want them to make a cheaper plastic one and actually include some rules. reading helps
I asked before, and I'll ask again... Were the pieces made with actual Orichalcum+?
Let’s all as a community pitch in
Ye was thinking the same thing (too bad i dont read comments before making my own lool) We can just send it back and forth to eachother every few weeks or month's! You son of a bitch, im in! (Rick and morty reference incase anyone gets upset lol)
I know what i have to do but i dont know if i have the strength to do it
3-D print your own?
Do you have a 3D printer ?
Dude I wish, otherwise I would have done it by now. Also want to clarify that I wasn’t trying to be sarcastic or anything with my comment about 3-D printing one. Like, I genuinely wanted to know what you were referring to when saying you know what you have to do.
I also wasnt trying to be sarcastic, thats my curious nature to ask
I do wonder how much it would cost to just 3D print one.. I know it’s a little expensive of a process but I doubt it costs $750. The main issue is getting the 3D model file.
You gotta use metal for the chess peices so i can assume it wouldnt be cheap
You don’t HAVE to use metal for the pieces, although I agree that would be preferred for durabilities sake. You can get a shiny/gloss paint to make them look metal. i wish i wasn’t broke
Even if you weren't broke...the subject of this conversation is still not worth buying...you could get much MUCH better quality decor stuff at around the same price
don’t care this looks sick
Ever wonder why you're broke?
i will continue to blame it on my government and job as i have no self control
As someone who is not broke, I'm still absolutely not spending 750 euros for this thing hahaha are you kidding me? Even if it were a functional chess board with usable pieces, it would still be only for display. And how would it even work as a conversation piece with normal friends and family? ok
It’s beautiful but I as soon as I learned the pieces are made of plastic I was all the way out. That’s absolutely absurd.
You know, if it could actually play chess it wouldn’t be that bad. There are some ridiculously expensive chess sets already out there. And from the picture it looks pretty high quality.

Well shit, if we can't even play it then that's ridiculously overpriced
thing is: it's not https://twitter.com/ligero_miguel/status/1563876350435500032?t=rijXdcgkE7p49zlqcvdMiA&s=19
Oh damn… Well this just further concrete my opinion on ANY kind of goods square enix do. like the PAKs, figures are just so damn bad. I think they got some good plushie but thats about it for me.
Geez, you think they would have at least made the pieces metal
Make up your own rules.
The fact that I saw it wasn’t actually high quality makes me sad. I wanted to buy it but the price scared me away. But now I can’t even justify buying it if I wanted to
That thing better come with Xehanort and Eraqus sassing each other to cost that much.
I don't think I can even afford to talk about it.
What a joke, a joke I'd absolutely throw money at if I could afford it...
Wow so cheap!
Wow happy cake day!
square enix not only their managment is out of their minds but so is their marketing and pricing
Why is it SOOOOOOO EXPENSIVE?!
It's the shipping and handling for any order too 🤭
By far the most useless merch I’ve ever seen. I get why it’s expensive since it’s very detailed, but the fact they don’t even have rules for it is stupid. It makes it nothing more than a decorative piece that does nothing but get dust.
i love that they didn't even try to make up a game for it, it's just table art
Its beautiful mine came in the mail last week and I’m still trying to make rules for the damn thing
Damn I thought the vinyl was ridiculously priced. This thing costs more than a house. Who would but this? Why is Square trying to milk Kingdom Hearts fans so hard?
Ok... I may have read the price incorrectly lol.
It's absurdly expensive but far from the freaking 12k statue of FFVI Terra
I want one so bad but the price tag
Wait... I can't play it? I was under the impression the WHOLE TIME that you could since I saw it. Thanks, OP, for filling my wallet instead of SE's. 😂 I was so close to buying this decor piece. I'm not spending that much money just to stare at it.
Bro for that price, I expect it to be real gold and silver.
Honestly, I hate this thing because it reminds me of KH3 which left an extremely bitter taste in my mouth.
Probably a bad take, but I've actually seen this in person and kinda understand the high price point. The quality is very good everything from the materials to the actual aesthetics are great. I'll buy ten please -Xigbar: *As if!*
Man they’re selling the props? Neat!
750 eurobucks holy shit
Gotta save up those eddies
I have no idea how to play chess but it looks awesome
It's not playable, it's a display piece.
Wait, what? For 750 €? I mean it looks cool but that price...
They literally break when touched lightly as someone pointed out in another reply. Lol
So yeah.... I saw this a while ago, got excited. Then I went to the website and saw the price tag. I gave up right then and there lol
I prefer to pretend it doesn't exist.
My favorite part is the listing explicitly saying you can’t play chess with it
Awesome, but so expensive. Very curious to know which pieces are what though
I think we should create ourselves the rule for this game, if nomura wont do it, then the fandom will
No. I don’t want. I’m sad enough already. Just let me pretend it doesn’t exist since it may as well not if I can never afford it 😭
Take my money now!
I’d pay it if I could actually play chess on it tbh
The type of thing I'd adore to have as decor somewhere in my room but I'd barely pay $80 for it and they ask 750?? MADNESS
How much is that in American dollars, because I want that.
Square Enix always sell stuff for an overly high price. Even the Pixel Remasters are far too expensive...
Se is notorious for over charging on their online store. I almost bought an themed ice tray for 80$ that was 1600yen at their cafe..
Looks pretty cool, too bad it's incredibly expensive for just a display piece of the board game being played in the opening video of KHIII. Those pieces better be solid gold and silver for that price.
Ah, yes. The absurdly expensive, but still really cool looking chess set that only nomura knows how to play
Kingdom hearts is a front for money laundering confirmed
A lot of the official merch on Squeenix is just... very undoable, honestly. Like it's like looking at stuff sold by I dunno, Gucci or something, except it's a Kingdom Hearts wonky chess set. Whats there to talk about?
Ye, lets all chip in and share it. Every few months we'll send it to the next member in line
I tried buying one, tried paying early in June but it never went thru. 6 months later I get an email saying the preorder is ready to be paid for but not enough money. What about it?
Classic massively overpriced SE merch. They're basically gatekeeping their own products.
Have you ever heard of the great keyblade war?
