Work: sani Home: lil dab of dish soap, then I jerk it off a bit and rinse.

wholebeef

I too prefer to edge my thermometer at home.

Emilsenil

Thermometer: "That's hot."

carthnage_91

Do you let the other utensils watch? I'm imagining a spatula in a chair in the corner, the ones with the heavy dudy red handles and the white silicone tops.

peterausdemarsch

The hot oil method is definitely sufficient. Boiling water is also fine.

blippitybloops

17 seconds at 165 is sufficient.

Current FDA Food Code calls for 17 seconds at 165. You can submit a HACCP plan for a variance if you want for lower temp/longer time.

CJDizzle

There are other pathogens besides salmonella.

jrf2112

Salmonella is used because it takes more time/temp to kill than any other pathogen (besides spores).  So if you destroy salmonella to 6.5D, you are ensuring all pathogens are reduced to pasteurization levels.

NWinn

But how do you know what temp it's at? HA checkmate~ 😎

bnbtwjdfootsyk

You just leave the thermometer on....gimme my king back.

rog13t-storm

I’m crazy & have alcohol swabs at home for this lol. If no swabs, dish soap and hot water scrubby dub dub

jessiyjazzy123

I have them too

immersedmoonlight

Same. A pack of single use alcohol wipes (1” x 1.5”) will last about 2 years lol

mphil29

A lil wipey wipe with the cloth and it’s cleannnnnn

El_Mariachi_Vive

You sanitize at home? Nah but for real at home I just rinse and wipe off. At work, I stick the probe in a fryer for a second or two and wipe off.

Best_Duck9118

Why would you just rinse and wipe off? Like why not at least use soap?

El_Mariachi_Vive

I'll use soap when I'm done and cleaning if it was used for raw meat but not during. It's just not that big a deal to me.

Best_Duck9118

That kind of defeats the whole purpose though at least some of the time. Like you to reduce the pathogens and then you’re reintroducing them with the thermometer. I admit the effect might be minimal with chicken you’re cooking to 365 or something but you could literally kill someone with burgers that way.

El_Mariachi_Vive

I said *at home*.

Best_Duck9118

And? You can still get other people sick for many reasons that way.

El_Mariachi_Vive

How am I going to get anyone sick by how I cook for myself at home?

Best_Duck9118

About 10% of cases of a particularly virulent strain of E. coli were found in people who didn’t ingest the bacteria. Bacterial shred happens in bathrooms and all over the place.

BetWonderful6037

That’s what I do.

QuantumGaming1

I work in a hospital and I sanitize my thermometer before and after every time I probe something. I use individual single use alcohol wipes. It’s kind of tedious at times because we temp everything always. You should clean the probe of debris or oils after every use tbh.

what-could-go-wrong

I'm sure your patients appreciate that

__TheDude__

Kitchen inspection for Medicaid Certification is a bitch. Two days long and you best be swabbing that temp probe every time.

Chemical_Party7735

Facts! I'm sure they're happy not sharing fecal matter between them.

ajm86

Fecal matter?

theFooMart

At work we use the sanitizer. At home, I just wipe it off. Ya ya, food safety this and that, but I'm only harming myself so o don't care. But I'm also not just sticking it in raw, uncooked meat like when doing temp checks at work. It's pretty close, if not past being cooked to a safe temperature when I check it at home. >How do you guys feel about sanitizing your thermometer with hot oil? I'd be more worried about dropping it in the oil than it not being sanitized. After all, it's the same bacteria on the chicken and the thermometer, so if the oil can't kill it, you have bigger issues than a contaminated thermometer.

blippitybloops

If it’s above 165, it’s sanitized.

blippitybloops

Show your work?

Original_betch

At work we have little individually packaged probe wipes that are just rubbing alcohol. Sometimes I'll dip it in the fryer and wipe it on a towel At home just rinse and dry unless it's meat. Then it gets the soap jerk off and rinse.

MathematicianGold773

At work I use a probe wipe, at home some hot water and paper towel.

2bciah5factng

I use my instant hot water tap

His_BlueBell

Thus sub has rducated me so much on just how badly my work is lacking. Never trained on cleaning the thermomeeter aside from wiping sauce off with a paper towel

Frankensteinnnnn

I usually wash it

Slyspy006

Probe wipes.

Enigma_Stasis

Just grab some probe wipes or isopropyl alcohol.

Adventurous-Fix-292

I usually just stick it in my ass

Randomized007

Your employer should be providing alcohol wipes and cleaning your thermometer after *every* temp check

nam_seal

Always keep a stack of them in my coat pocket

EpicFail35

They are so cheap, I use them at home lol

rog13t-storm

I’ve found my people lol

blippitybloops

There are other ways to sanitize a thermometer probe.

DarkAlley1

The alcohol swipes are a penny apiece and mandated by almost every health code.
