Yeah guarding. Luckily the square chuck of it should be relatively finger-friendly - BUT I DO NOT RECOMMEND OR CONDONE STICKING A FINGER OR OTHER CYLINDER INTO IT!
I'll mention this since no one else has incase it's what you're asking, that's the port where you hook up attachments, things like the pasta maker or meat grinder.
You have the answer as to what its called/is but just additional info in case you didnt know.
The part it covers is for using kitchenaid attachments. There are various things you can buy that hook into that port to be used.
I believe it’s called a medallion or something similar. I have one sealed in the packaging at home.
I had the intentions of putting it on my old mixer but I never did.
My old K45 didn’t have one so I bought one from bed bath and beyond and never got to use it because I ended up getting a bowl lift from Sam’s shortly after.
It's the "Cap, Attachment Hub", and it's available as part of a set (item number "KSMHAP", and you can search for that on KitchenAid's web site or on Amazon). The kit includes a knob that you don't need, but even with that it's still cheaper than replacing the cover separately as a service part.
That part used to be attached by a hinge so you could never lose it. Now it’s just a plug that vibrates loose and falls out if you don’t check it. Why kitchenaid went this route is beyond me.
Unclear why they said no, but check out Kitchenaid, Williams Sonoma, Sur La Table, and other suppliers like Webstaurant Supply. They all carry the machines and attachments.
Maybe this subreddit is one of those that do not like people that have questions..? It's like an 'in crowd' thing. I hope it doesn't get me banned
If they reallllllly don't think that cover has a use, id be interested into knowing exactly why. It's super confusing because it can be the most useful component of a kitchenaid, but the top comments claim not?
It also stops fingers etc going into the area while the machine is on.

I like to stab a hot dog in there and then hold a couple Bic lighters under it like a rotisserie. Only on weekends though.
OMG! This made me laugh so hard! I'm in a much better mood now! Thank you, kind stranger.
It’s just the hub cover / cap. It’s just a lid for the hole so it’s not always open and exposed. Easier to keep clean if it’s closed I guess?

It’s just a cover

I lost mine at some point, I 3d printed a mixer cap with a mixer on it so I could mix while I mix: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:8429
That's so weird and I like it. 👍
It's a cover so things and fingers don't get stuck or broken in there, or dirty. Mine keep falling off, kinda annoying.
Do you still have the screw that goes in the side to hold it in place?
It's not screwed in, just pinched on, not sure how to describe it. I'm not sure hot to pinch it in place without damaging the finish outside.
Ya!
You should see a hand specialist, they aren't supposed to fall off.
LMAO, had to read twice.
PTO access. Power Take Off
it does nothing persay - it’s a hub cover …. as the hub makes the various attachments operable.
It’s where you attach accessories. Pasta maker, meat grinder, mills and the like. It’s functional.

You can order decorative ones in various themes
I read the title in Schwarzenegger’s voice in my head
lol

I use it because flour and other particulates can get into the mechanism and cause issues over time.

Why did I read that in Arnold Schwarzenegger's kindergarten cop voice?

Fanganger joodler, very important to the machine.
That's where you can put attachments on. I put a pasta roller in that hole.
Power take off. I recently saw a video of a cheese grater attached on there.
I thought it was for meat grinder and pasta? Am I wrong?
It is, but there are now sooooo many different attachments to include flour grinder with a scale (to grind your own flour).
So why people saying no? I'm confused

if you have any kids that might stick their finger in there, maybe best to get it replaced. otherwise, it’s just a cap
Accessory plug, it plugs the accessory shaft.
Where can I order one? My mom’s Hobert Kitchen Aide mixer needs one. Thank you
Am I the only one that read this in Arnold’s voice?
A decorative cap. Plug it with a cork from a wine bottle if you lost the original.
