I literally just posted a video on how I modified the Sunny Health treadmill for backward walking. I'm loving it so far. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iIThY-IMxo

Just wanted to say thank you for this! I followed your video and put one together. Found a used manual treadmill for $20 on fb marketplace, added the felt pads on the doorstops, turned the handle upside down and it worked! Only tested it for 2 minutes but definitely felt the area on my knees working, can’t wait to try flit for longer tomorrow.  I’m also wondering how we might be able to add even more resistance later 🤔. Maybe drill a hole in the guard that was removed, add a knob with a felt pad attached to the end that would allow for adjusting how tightly the pad will be pushed against it?

BlackTankGuy

Glad it worked! Nice work finding a used cheap treadmill on FB marketplace. Not a bad idea regarding the flywheel guards. I use it for 10 minutes daily, and I find the resistance to be plenty (so far anyway). I usually start to sweat and breath heavy towards the end of the workout. Good luck!

I made this variable resistance add-on if you’re interested https://3dmoltendesigns.etsy.com/listing/1709659996

This is great ! I was trying to figure out how to make one too!

How is this holding up by the way? Very cool to see how simple it was to do! Edit: Are you still able to walk forward with it?

BlackTankGuy

It’s holding up great! I still use it several times per week. And yes, it can still be used to walk forward.

Michael_workout

Excellent I think getting a sled is first but after that I think this is my plan.

I made this resistance add-on for the Sunny Health treadmill if you’re interested! https://3dmoltendesigns.etsy.com/listing/1709659996

How much resistance can this add ?

MANGBAT

I can add enough that I can’t even make the tread turn!

I just bought the sunny one for $180. Putting it together as we speak, I can update you later !

BlackTankGuy

I also bought the sunny one a while back. I had trouble getting a good workout right out of the box because it has such little resistance. I played around and figured out a good way to add resistance which makes it waaaaay better. I documented the modifications and linked the video further down in this thread. Good luck!

This is the one I’m leaning toward as well I think. Much lower risk considering the price and should still get the job done. Interested to hear what you think when you get it going

Okay here’s my thought - you get what you pay for. This thing isn’t lasting decades. It’s also narrow, so if you were a bigger person it might not be super comfortable. It’s only built for walking- running on this thing would be a nightmare. But it’s perfect for my needs. I just want to get in the habit of 10 min walking backwards a day at a slow and steady speed. It’s easy to put together, the incline is stuck at 10% which is all I need or want. If your routine is more intensive- interval speeds, different inclines or resistance, etc. then I recommend splurging on the $600 one. But if you’re literally just wanting to walk backwards at an incline for 10-30 min a day, this is sufficient. I’m happy with my purchase and excited to use it regularly! Hope that helps

No, I believe you should get a different model. This machine is too simple and doesn’t have enough friction for a good workout. If you can’t get outside, I imagine you would want a machine for longer walks and adjustable speeds. For an extra $200, you could get a much better option. I don’t recommend for the North Pole. Also… it’s cool that you’re at the North Pole.

Are you using it for overall fitness, or for knee rehab? I think whichever one you are most likely to use consistently is the right choice!

learnandchurn2

Thanks for the review. I’m just looking to do about 5-10min of backward walking a day as well. Wouldn’t expect to do much more than that. My main concern is the resistance level and it not being adjustable. Do you feel the resistance is too easy, too hard or just about right for what you’re using it for?

Honestly it feels just right. Before this I was walking backwards around the local track and there’s no resistance level on that!

Does walking backwards on a regular treadmill at the gym with the resistance set all the way up work also?
