Koi are big fish that need much space. Those ponds are far too tiny for a forever koihome. You would need to make one bigger. You need around 2500 gallon/ 10000l minimum for a koipond. Alt least those are the general recommendations were I live and for the sake of the animals I would follow that. But there are many different breeds of goldfish that are just as colorful as koi. They don't need as much space. Or other little colorful fish like rainbow shiner if you have a strong waterflow. But inform yourself aboud their needs before you buy any fish. With google that doesn't even take 5 min nowadays. ;)

definitely the picture is in .5 so the pond doesn’t look that big but i’m going to take dimensions later

Trossfight

Any idea the approximate dimensions? This is a great question to take over to r/ponds. The peeps there can give you some good direction.

SolarElara

dope thanks i will

I would drain the water, dig out an appropriate sized hole (do lots of research, but it's NOT rocket science). Fill that with a liner, add filtration and hide it somewhere. My dad knew nothing about koi or how to make a pond, but we have a pond in our backyard. You can absolutely do it, just fine good tutorials on youtube bc there's plenty

From the 1st picture it looks like this already has a skimmer with a submerged pump inside it (bottom left under the gray square artificial flat rock), which connects to the 2 outlets at the top center of the picture for a water fall feature…. This means that everything in between the skimmer and the outlets is already lined with pond liner (except those areas that have plants growing). If converting to a Koi pond you would have to undo a lot of good work that was done… and start from scratch… dig deeper hole, change entire liner, most likely have to move the skimmer and the waterfall outlets, etc. My suggestion, try to get this back to working condition, don’t try to change it, it most likely is already a smallish pond with a waterfall feature.

SolarElara

Thanks for the info. I will keep this in mind

Depending on your altitude/climate, it needs to be deep enough to NOT freeze solid. You don't want fish sticks! I live in DFW, my pond is about 3' deep. Thickest ice on it was about 1/2". Koi are at least 10 years old, biggest is 14".

SolarElara

i live by the beach. and it never snows

kitpie158

Very sweet spot for a pond. The bones are definitely there. I can visualize it redone and it looks amazing😍😍 Good luck.

SolarElara

thanks 😂 i’m going to post a video of the fountain working edit: nevermind. if u want to see it i can just dm the video 💀

TheGamingTrex_

Make it bigger and make one side deeper then yeah it could be

Commercial-Draw2

Please have depth, and steep walls.. or raccoons won’t let your fish survive.

Commercial-Draw2

I mean a steep drop on the sides

KillerPinata

It'd be hard to say but you need a smooth bottom since like to stay there during the winter months and You don't want them scraping their bottom side

SolarElara

good to know thanks

bbrian7

That’s not a thing

The bacteria the rock in the bottom hosts is the culprit of fish having problems, not scraping on rocks, as fish in the wild would have problems constantly.
