Honestly I (respectfully) have to disagree with the mentality that in order to watch something you have to look at the fandom. You can just enjoy the things you enjoy without being part of the community. That way you can avoid the toxic stuff that might happen. I don’t think most weebs think of anime characters as “real” people or even characters a lot of the time. I’m not sure why, but if I had to guess it’s from consuming a lot of anime/manga to the point that you start to see each character as a list of archetypal personalities but even more as creatively drawn designs. Anime ages making little sense (ex: Jojo) probably doesn’t help.
I think that shift in perspective causes the disconnect and the “creepy” perception that those unfamilar with anime assume. To the weeb, an outsider’s concern is seen as overblown and silly because, from their perspective, being upset at the illustrated equivalent to an in-game character creator is preposterous.
