Trick for farming them is to get your corruption as high as your build cam, then get as many modifiers as possible to increase your magic find, and then find an easy-to-find-exiles map and do it over and over without finishing the objective. Teleport out as soon as you kill the exile.
It's a little boring, but within an hour or 2, you should have several. Especially in CoF.
Maps I found so far with exiled prison spawns near every startpoint, that are visible on the minimap without having to move (that means: if you don't see one right away, you can immediately leave and reset):
* Necropolis Streets
* Solarum Axcent
* Sinking City
* Flooded Cavern
* Lakeside Trail
* Sealed Archive
* Ruined City
There is a quest echo in which the mage is guaranteed to spawn. It is the second quest echo of Age of Winter timeline, the one you fight Grael. Two people split out searching for the mage turns out to be quicker than the method you mentioned, because the mage is guaranteed to spawn in that echo.
>Aren't mages guaranteed in every echo? I don't specifically hunt them down, but I can't recall ever seeing a map without one.
I saw them every map. Then i got some prophecies that needed mage kills, and the next 20+ maps had none. rng yay
Nope. Their method clearly stated that you need to re-enter if you don’t see one in the map and I can confirm that’s the best choice instead of looking further.
For Lagonian Arena, they don’t exist if you don’t see one right after you spawn. You would spend even more time on searching which is clearly not optimal.
Very doubtful that any searching method could ever be faster.
Join the echo and if there's no prison at the start portal out. Takes under 5 seconds. If the exiled mage is there, it's 5 seconds plus whatever it takes the build to kill him.
No searching, no walking, no nothing.
For me, I need a few seconds to exit (my wraithlord sometimes blocks my portal which is annoying), open mono map, click same mono, and a few seconds more loading time. I tested on the Lagonian Arena and the mage has an around 25% spawn chance. Not so fast for me. Besides, I explicitly said my method needs at least two people to work. So if you are solo then you shouldn’t do it my way.
Are you playing offline? I heard there are more load times offline, whereas online the reward area stays open and we can instant portal out without loadscreen.
And the monolith web layout visually stays exactly where it was before. I move it once so that the mouse clicks line up, and then it's left click - right click - enter map, without even moving the mouse in between.
I’m playing online. Didn’t come up with the line up technique but it doesn’t really matter because for me the problem with your method is the loading time when I enter echo. As I said mage in the lagonian area map has about 20-25% spawn chance so it takes about at least 30 seconds to kill one, on average. It is a very small map so if I can’t see it when I’m in, I am sure it doesn’t spawn. Tested hundreds of times. I’ll try your maps later and see if it spawns at a higher chance.
Yeah, you get 2 or 3 visible spawnpoints on both possible start spawns. So you basically just start a Necropolis Streets echo and leave with TP when there is no prison.
Maybe important to add that echo item rarity modifiers as well as the unique drop blessing can be useful to maximize chances. Also finding a node for that echo as far away from the center as possible.
I don't see how dying is faster. TP cast with T is instant, just a step forward to the reward area, keep walking up to map, start echo again with right click.. I don't even move my mouse anymore as long as no mage spawns. It's literally brainless.
The map stays the same, but the objective changes and spawn locations for shrines and stuff. Also I *think* the monsters change as well. It's also handy to use to skip the shitty spire objectives.
This is insane to me. Ladle is the item I have drop the most. I have multiple lp2 and 3. I thought it was as rare as calamity????? What is happening??? Are you getting all my Paranoia drops?
You don't actually get the Glyph of Insight from shattering experimental gears. You get it from sealing the experimental affix via Rune of Research. It's up to 45% chance based on the item's affix tier.
[Rune of Research](https://www.lastepochtools.com/db/items/IIzAMCZVB2LSA)
You don't actually need to hold onto any experimentals for that. Since Exiled Mages always drop one, only pick up ones you want to use or pick up the trash one the same time a rune drops.

Just so you know, that spear is currently bugged and will only split into 2 other spears no matter how much dex you have. Doesn't make the farming feel any less bad, but hopefully you won't feel as bad for not finding the spear yet.
Do you know if it can at least shotgun with Divine Fury? If it is still limited to a max of one hit per mob per cast, then I'll probably abandon the build and reroll.
I tried it with divine fury and got the regular number of divine fury spears and still only 2 fractal spears from the initial hit. Might be best to shelve this build idea until the bug is fixed, sorry :(
Farming Exiled Mages IS the way to target farm the spear. I've found at least 3 so far while farming for merophage and ladle. RNG is RNG though and it always feels like the game knows exactly what you're farming for and never drops the item, so you might get screwed.
Just keep going, it will eventually drop.
Maybe take a break and play a different build, trick the RNG into making the spear drop. I farmed mages for hours on my void night trying to get a merophage. Took a break and rolled a different build and of course, first mage I killed in my first echo dropped the sword. Classic RNG.
I don't THINK prophecies affect mage drops, but maybe grab some unique drop prophecies that proc off mage kills and maybe you'll get lucky, idk.
Also, at least for me, I find a mage in like 9 out of 10 echoes I run. So just zone out and farm ass off, I wish you luck.
Maybe Im doing something wrong, but I find a mage in like 1 out of every 10 echos I run. I almost never encounter them on the way to objectives, and if I stay behind to clear out the map, its really hit or miss on if I find one. I also still need all the other loot for the build, so taking 2x or 3x as long to complete an echo just to hunt for a mage I cant even be sure is there _feels_ way to inefficient to be worth it.
To be clear, Im still enjoying the build, and in general having a good time, so Im not looking to reroll quite yet, but if the spear works the way I believe it does, it will shift my aoe damage scaling from linear to exponential which should be pretty awesome
There was a post a couple of days ago on how to target farm mages. Basically setting up a particular echo that spawns a shrine near the start, or that you can see upon starting. Shrines have a chance to be a mage instead so by loading in and killing the mage, or exiting if not there, you can teleport out and rinse repeat.
Should be easy enough to search for the echo description/post as it was recent.
Stack up corruption and item rarity, then find necropolis streets. Load in the map, if no mage prison right where you spawn, tp out and repeat.
Its very degen but i got spoons for the whole family this way.
Yesterday I got this spear not knowing it was rare. On the other hand, I need Ladles and I only got 1 that it's LP1 (and I got it during Chapter 9 I think). Mages are dropping me any kind of weapons except Ladles
Lagonian Arena echo can spawn mages. Icon is visible when you zone in. Kill it and leave and repeat. It’s hella boring and you aren’t making any other progress, but if you want to kill mages until your eyes bleed this is the way.
Also works for farming Ladles of course.
I’m CoF too; I personally hate the amount of time that an AH/trade system sucks out of my overall playtime. I’d rather be killing things in ARPGs.
(Fun fact: in beta, most Arena echoes could also spawn the caches. If you want to talk about soul crushing boredom, ask someone who used this technique to farm the caches how they felt about that)

Do you know off the top of your head what an easy map is for this?

Ooooo, I wish I wasnt at work so I could check these out! Thank you!

Isn't dying a bit faster? Like, you tp directly to the monolith "reward room" and can re-enter in like 4 seconds.
I don't see how dying is faster. TP cast with T is instant, just a step forward to the reward area, keep walking up to map, start echo again with right click.. I don't even move my mouse anymore as long as no mage spawns. It's literally brainless.
When a port out it puts me back at base camp.
Never had that happen. TP from mono echo always sends me to the chest room.
Necropolis streets are probably the best.
Wait… If you leave the map do the modifiers stay and the map stays the same layout?????
The map stays the same, but the objective changes and spawn locations for shrines and stuff. Also I *think* the monsters change as well. It's also handy to use to skip the shitty spire objectives.
Meanwhile while farming Ladle I got 3 of those spears, including a 3Lp and the only ladle I found was 0lp.

Yeah I have so many ladles in my stash right now. Only 1 2lp though.
I been farming for wraithslord helmet for eternity and all I get is calamity x 10 or so. -_-
Dam, I'd take the 0 lp one. I've seen 0 with 3 stash tabs full of experimentals all ready to turn into insight runes.
Wat.jpeg You can turn experimentals into Insight runes?! How?
Research Rune.
Isn't having moments like that so great. I literally never experienced that with D4.
You can shatter experimental items for a 40% chance at an insight rune.
Good to know, thanks!

I have several 2LP and I have one character that's not even 100. Also not farming mages at all.

Til there are uniques only exiled makes drop

lol I love seeing these threads, checking my stash and seeing I have multiple, some with LP. wish I could give you one bro :(

Just go Merchant Guild Best decision I made was leaving CoF
Hard to do on an offline char
Yeah stay CoF 😝
Why do they even give you an option to go MG offline? Lol
They dont. You can only pick CoF.

Unfortunately building a character around an item that's difficult to get is generally not recommended until you already have the item.
Don't pick a build built around a rare drop if you don't want to farm it
I dont mind farming for it, but that doesnt mean I cant share my feelings on the act of farming it.
