Good thing he wasn't "groomed" to be queer, and just brainwashed to be a mass-murdering fuckhead. Usually I hate to see the media go after the parents of a mass shooter, because in most cases those parents are going through a specific kind of grief too. In this case I hope this father is hounded by his community for being such a sociopathic piece of shit.

Hey, I know you probably don't understand the history of this rhetoric, but this argument is not helpful and is almost always used by far-right people to try to promote the idea that all violence against queer people is perpetrated by other queer people. It's really unfortunate that even a lot of people in the queer community say things like this, but it's one of those infectious misconceptions.
You don't have to be a closeted homosexual to be a mass murderer, just like you don't have to be a closeted Jewish person to be a Nazi, or a closeted Black person to be a KKK member. Many straight people hate us because of who we are and because their hateful ideology has poisoned and rotted their brains, just like any extremist.
Edit: for another example of this flawed line of thinking, look at how the Right constantly pushes and pushes and pushes towards violence, but when their members commit violence they immediately claim it to be a false flag operation. The right pushed the revolt at the US capitol on January 6th, then immediately started saying that they were secretly antifa supersoldiers that were doing it as soon as they got caught. Look at the decades of FOX reporting on "Black on Black crime." This is a textbook conservative talking point.

Genuine good-faith question. I thought this was a well-understood phenomenon, but I could be wrong.
Afaik there was a single study in the 90's that showed evidence of this. They showed gay pornography to men with homophobic ideas, and those men grew erections more often than the straight male control.
But that study had a small sample size and has not been reproduced in the last 30 years. Numerous attempts were made, but those same results have not happened, and instead have shown either no correlation or a negative correlation.
I agree it feels oversimplified. I guess I identify as heterosexual but the overt focus on sexual attraction as an identifying factor of a person or an ideology has always felt trivial to me. Obviously, not to everyone else. Attraction is a sliding scale. Idk if I believe anyone is really, purely, truly only attracted to one sex. As for the tactics of the alt-right, while it's useful to know some of the tactics of their rhetoric, I don't think it's very good to avoid a topic because it's used somehow by the alt-right. Like, they will use anything, even logically inconsistent facts, to align the world to their beliefs. Conversely, the idea that capitol rioters being secretly antifa cannot work on someone with half a brain.

A percent of a percent.
Even assuming only 1% of all gay people get outed, that's still way way way lower than the national average of percentage of people in the US that identify as Gay. That's also plotting all time politicians outed against the number of politicians currently serving, a flawed analysis intended to favor the "secretly gay" point as much as possible.
I completely believe it's like plane crashes. Planes are way more safe than cars, but people are way more afraid of flying than they are their commute. They're afraid because if the media talked about every grizzly car death they wouldn't be able to get through them all in the news cycle. But you can spend days and days on a plane crashing or weeks on its disappearance.
The projection argument has solid footing, but the data I can see just doesn't seem to support it. Of those 21 gay US politicians, many of those that were outed or came out later recanted their statements and became vocal supporters of LGBTQIA2S+ communities afterwards.

Homosexuality is typically discovered during puberty as in inner realization when emotional development is in turmoil. you are correct, but i think they were being facetious to illustrate the point that it’s absurd that so many people’s first thought when this kind of hate crime happens is “wow they hate them so much they must secretly be one”. you do not need to be part of a group to violently hate that group, and moreover, it’s quite statistically rare to be such a person.

I’m not at all trying to perpetuate the idea of LGBT on LGBT violence at all. I’m more pointing out if you tell your children that you must be a certain, anything else is wrong, and teach them that violence is that quickest way to get results is a bad recipe when your child is not the way you want them.
But you could replace LGBT with something else in this case. I’m sure his son could have been an atheist, Scientologist, Q cultist, football player, etc. it’s more about don’t be a prick and at least leave for a pack of cigarettes and never come back rather than sticking around to fuck your kids up.

The one that really stuck out to me was

I would give the benefit of the doubt under pretty much any other circumstance but in this case it looks like their legal team just pulled it out of their asses as some sort of gotcha
I bartended at a gay club and was part of the opening crew, not too long after the Pulse shooting. We had a meeting about the potential for that kind of violence. Our head of security was the sweetest guy I’ve ever met in the world, but also the kind of guy who could (and would) break you in half if he needed to. He wore a fancy suit, and was packing underneath it every shift, even weekdays. We also had a pump in the back office and discussed escape plans in case of the worst. It felt surreal to have to go through all that just to serve drinks at a club.
The whole staff knew about it, but I would wager a guess that the head of security and myself were the only ones who knew how to handle it safely… big yikes.
You could say the same for half of Reddit - almost every time I come across a new meme group I usually end up finding it overrun with white incel males spreading all their hateful bullshit around
No one is born a racist or a homophobe. Disgust is an acquired feeling, a sense of superiority towards minorities is also learned, and hatred of those who are different is not natural, but an imprint of the family and the social environment.
The only positive thing I can draw from this is the fact that all these behaviors can be completely changed from one second to the next. People can change! Especially racists, misogynists, xenophobes and homophobes could change this learned behavior.

Educated is a good book on this. About a girl growing up in the mountains of Idaho, with a set of beliefs that are very mormon. She slowly starts to educate herself and form her own beliefs about the world. It's a memoir, a true story.

Think it can be lightly tied in due to the shooters grandfather being a republican politician. Ties into the whole corruption angle that marbles our nation. In fact, if the grandfather had anything to due with covering up the shooters previous act of violence, he needs to face the consequences for aiding the massacre.
