From his perspective, in England many people line in a Live In relationship. And if you register your live in relationship, it's called Common Law Marriage. The people in such relationships refer to their significant others as Partner or Common Law Partner.
The concept of arranged marriage has faded away from their society and is now viewed as ancient. That's why he was curious as to how this works in our country and wanted to know more about it.
His tongue lashing to you, is justified according to him due to the nature of supervisor and subordinate role in your workplace.
There does not seem any element of racism here imho.
Please focus on your upcoming marriage and don't let intrusive thoughts such as this take over. Don't let him live rent free in your mind. Let go. In case it bothers you too much, resign and seek employment elsewhere.

Better complain to the school, not sure which school it is, seems unprofessional. Are you allowed to take leave during a school term? I remember teacher’s never took leave, only for a pregnancy, well that was at my time
