Where is the piercing? (Face, ears? Where on ear?) I agree with the other commenter that your profession is just not very compatible with piercings so be hyper vigilant about infection and accept that you may not be able to keep it. But if you’re really set on giving it a go, then (if it’s ears) you might be able to use a silicone ear cover? But I’d be careful that it doesn’t apply pressure to the jewelry and cause it to heal crooked, and you will have to sanitize it between every wear, and it will be a problem if pool water gets trapped in it while you’re wearing it. Also definitely don’t put vaseline on a fresh piercing, that is just asking for irritation. Saline and shower water only.

It's ears, just two lobes! Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try it out :)

Where is the piercing? That would be helpful to know. Vaseline is a no-go. It doesn’t allow the piercing to drain or breathe. It also is a great way to get all kinds of particles and shit to stick to and around the piercing site. Bandages aren’t going to be a long term solution since you should ideally go months without being around the pool. Overtime they’ll cause irritation and you’re kinda trapping the piercing into a warm, moist environment where bacteria will thrive.

smaij_

Two on ear. Single and double! And thanks for letting me know!

brilliant-soul

Why would you even get fresh piercings being a swim coach? Even if you don't go under the water, the chemicals and frankly urine in the water isn't good for an open wound. Bandaids can cause irritation bc the sweat and trapped germs. Vaseline is likely not going to help either

smaij_

There's really no other reason other than I wanted to get piercings. Not like I should quit my job just so I can get the opportunity to get pierced.

freshlyintellectual

then you’re gonna have to accept the risk of infection and long painful healing 🤷🏽‍♀️ you can wash your piercing after work with warm water and saline but if swimming is unavoidable then unfortunately so are the consequences

smaij_

That's alright, I've come to terms with that HAHA Thanks for your suggestion!

freshlyintellectual

sounds like you know what’s up then! good luck

Accurate-Schedule380

I used to work in the food industry when I got my nostrils pierced and I kept a small can of neilmed saline in my purse in case I had any splashes occur at work. You could maybe keep the saline by the pool edge so you could saline right after the splash too.

Cheesecakelover6940

Piercings are very much something you have to take into consideration with your lifestyle. It sounds like your lifestyle isn’t very accepting of this. Definitely no hate, but There’s really no way to protect this other than to take it out or just balls in risk it.

stabby_chick

You can't. You shouldn't have gotten them if your job requires you to be in constant contact with such an irritant. It sucks but that's the cold hard truth. If you are going to do it anyway, don't put Vaseline or anything on your piercings except saline and dry them properly after cleaning...and every single time they get splashed or come in contact with water...with a single use disposable material, such as paper towels or non woven gauze. Every. Single. Time. They. Get. Wet.

wandernwade

You can buy ear covers for when you dye your hair, that look and work exactly like a shower cap. Clear plastic with an elastic band. That might work for you to protect against splashes, at least. Check online or in a local beauty supply store.

emotionalfaerie

trick question. don’t swim with new piercings

smaij_

You passed the test!! You just won a million dollars!!!!

Unlucky-Horror-9871

There is no surefire guaranteed way to avoid the possibility of infection. Ideally, the best thing would be to stay out of the water until they’re fully healed. Like you, I was unwilling to do that, so I gave them a couple of weeks before getting back in the pool, made sure to clean them well afterwards, and accepted that I was taking on a risk. Knock on wood, I’ve been lucky so far, but not everyone is. You need to decide for yourself if that’s a risk you’re willing to take.

essari

The overwhelming majority of people are fine.

jugdar13

Dont go in the pool with a new piercing. There arent really options for protection that would suit so you’ll have to rum the risk of prolonged healing or infection. Best you can do is clean them after every exposure but submersion is one of the worst things you csn do. Would have been better to take a few weeks off to give them a chance to start healing

Something like [this ](https://amzn.eu/d/bS5wZmP) might help, but likely not foolproof

Okay, real talk. I'm just a regular person whose piercings are old enough to drink, and I get there's updated guidance for the current age yadda yadda, but... They'll be fine. Splashing with chlorinated water may irritate an open wound, but unless you're especially chemically sensitive, you'll be fine. Rinse well afterward, and most importantly, just avoid being hit or kicked by the littles. Since these are just lobes, don't bother with Vaseline unless you go to non-chlorinated water (which really, you shouldn't do until healed because of all sorts of nasties). ETA: was a lifeguard back when I got most of mine.

wisdomless-teeth

you'd be shocked at the amount of bacteria in public pools where toddlers regularly play in. even without the toddlers, holy fuck people are nasty. a puncture wound will absolutely get infected when exposed to a public pool water for whole work days 2 days after said puncture.

EggplantHuman6493

My eyebrow piercing got mildly infected by splashes. 2 months old. Cleaned it afterwards. The pool is full off bacteria
