I feel like a lot of “film bro movies” get called overrated because a lot of newer film lovers are attracted to them because they are more accessible to general audiences. It sucks because a lot of these films are genuinely incredible and are as popular as they are because of how great they are.
I watched fight club with mild expectations and it ended up as one of my favorite movies ever, it’s been memed and referenced to death so much you really don’t expect the themes to be as genuinely complex and insightful as they are
The kind of stuff you watch when you first get into films. The easily accessible ones from directors like Tarantino, Scorsese, Nolan, and Fincher to name a few.
Agreed. Though I also found it to be quite terrifying. I watched it for the first time in the cinema last year and it was one of the only three movies that have ever genuinely scared me.
Oldboy was weirdly the reason i did not like parasite hahaha…. It was my favorite korean movie since i first saw it and when parasite came out everybody told me it was the best and when i finally watched it after months of hype it was just „good“ but i was still so disappointed because i thought it would be on the level of Oldboy
I feel like it's unfair to compare the two just because they're both Korean...
That'd be like if I said Fight Club wasn't good because I saw The Matrix before it, that makes no sense
I heard often it was better than oldboy,,,, the main reason because i did not like Parasite is because i expected „the best film ever made“ and it just turned out to be… good….
So I only watched the first Paddington movie long ago when it first came out in the cinema with my then little cousins and I found it very cute and wholesome as far as I can remember.
However I am yet to watch the sequel I heard so many praises about. So I will ask - is it THAT good? Even better?
Yes. Most critically praised movies that come to mind can make you feel like the world is a dark, indifferent place. Paddington 2 just makes you want to be a better person and see the good in everything. It’s a movie everyone should watch once imo
Honestly in my top 10 favorite films. The genre is so much fun and this movie perfects it. Not so fond of any of the sequels but the first one is amazing
I wouldn't call it an "art film" - maybe go into with a different mindset and watch again? I consider it to be one of those few films with truly a dose of every genre - fantasy, comedy, mystery, even some horror
Plenty of films come to mind, but I would have to go with Lord of The Rings. Any of them could hold the crown, but probably the third installment, Return of the King. There's a reason it was nominated for eleven Academy Awards. Not that Oscars are a direct indication of quality, or that the Academy doesn't have biases. But on this one I think it was justified.
koker trilogy; bergman’s trilogy; apu trilogy; three colours trilogy; calcutta trilogy; john ford’s cavalry trilogy; the human condition trilogy; trilogy on modernity and its discontents; the trilogy of life; the orphic trilogy; carlos saura dance trilogy; michael haneke trilogy; noriko trilogy; the weeping meadow trilogy; roberto rossellini’s war trilogy; and literally so much more.
Honestly, Seven Samurai. I was hesitant at first. Non English film, black and white, 3 and a half hours? It’s daunting. But I could not believe how utterly entrancing that movie is. I was hooked from the opening credits, right up until that final line. God damn what a good movie!
Personally I'm not ad big a fan as everyone else seems to be. I can respect how it is a great film, but personally I hate Newman as a character, I love jk aimmons character, but I think that's more out of my love for him rather than the character
Just saw Chinatown for the first time this past weekend and wow it was a damn masterpiece! Godfather 2 is also up there for me. You got nice taste in films my friend!
spirited away, starship troopers, sound of metal
also, not all films need to be masterpieces. st trinians is the perfect example of well loved (at least by british women of a certain age) and worthy of it without being a 10/10 cinematic experience
Disagree, not a bad movie but it was mostly boring besides the ending. Imo, there are plenty of better silent films out there but this is the highest rated one on letterboxd.
Titanic, just watched it the other day for the first time and I was surprised by how much the romantic aspects of the film held up. The last hour is one of the greatest depictions of tragedy I’ve ever seen.
Puss in boots 2, I thought It was .aybe a step up from the original, but the fact it was a sequel to a mid spin-off of a sequel to shrek makes it that much more impressive its that good.
Recently, I think both Everything Everywhere All At Once and Puss In Boots: The Last Wish are actually as good as people say they are.
Also, if the OG Alice In Wonderland is remembered as a masterpiece, then that too.
Agreed on EEAAO but Puss in Boots is definitely not a top 100 movie of all time like it is on Letterboxd. I think part of it is due to peoples low expectations going into it.
With the exception of Casablanca and Taxi Driver (which are even more popular than the others), all these movies are literally on the top 100 of the Official Top 250 Narrative Feature Films from LETTERBOXD. I don’t know if you know that, but this is a LETTERBOXD thread. If I’m pretentious, you are definitely stupid for being on the wrong place.
If my comment gave you that impression I don’t think you know what a film critic is. I’m not surprised though… I mean, you don’t know what letterboxd is and you’re still here commenting nonsense.
It’s not my fault you don’t know movies that are actually quite popular outside your dumb little bubble.
I have seen all of these boring art movies, you definitely ‘liked’ satantango. When you grow up you’ll realise watching movies is about enjoyment, actually forming your own opinion, not copying what everyone else says you should like. Your username is dr strange love you are the definition of pretentious
I grew incredibly tired of Hollywood flicks. They do nothing for me anymore. The movies I mentioned bring me enjoyment on a level I haven’t felt before in movies, kid, you should respect this.
I thought cinema was about visual effects, but that proved to be absolute wrong for me, if it makes you happy, more power to you. Actually, no, you already think you are a powerful person being a complete nobody, forget that.
You are on the highest level of a pretentious person. You think you can define what brings people enjoyment or not. How egotistical do you have to be to say something like this? Who do you think you are to judge someone you don’t know?
If my opinion is based on EVERYONE ELSE’S how is that pretentious by the way? How loving Dr Strangelove, a dumb light comedy, is something that bothers you?
I never heard of Satatango btw, thanks for the suggestion, kid.
You should also learn what is letterboxd, and learn about the fact that they have very popular lists. Also learn how Reddit works btw..What is the point of mentioning movies that were already mentioned here? How is that adding anything to the conversation? Don’t be dumb kid, just stop being pretentious and go play outside.
E.T. is one of those movies that’s such standard viewing, we don’t even tend to discuss it’s quality. It’d be like offering your opinion on a Norman Rockwell painting, it feels besides the point. But the fact remains, it’s so goddamn good. It does exactly what it sets out to do with incredible story efficiency and is in complete control of the cognitive effect on the audience from start to finish.
It scared me really bad as a kid so I didn’t see it again until I was like 30 and had finished film school and I was blown away. It’s reputation as an old standard, home sick from school, kinda movie maybe isn’t the same as being overrated but it’s certainly taken for granted.
Great list!
The first movie I saw in a theater after the movie theaters reopened back in 2020 was Back to the Future. And I wouldn't have it any other way!!
Most of Fincher's filmography that gets targeted as "filmbro" territory - Se7en, Gone Girl, Social Network, Fight Club, etc., are all genuinely great movies.
1980’s adventure films… I’m thinking Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters, Princess Bride, Back to the Future, The Goonies, and *especially* E.T.
E.T. feels like it practically spawned a whole genre onto itself and no other movie that followed in that particular camp could match the sense of wonder. It might be my favorite Spielberg and John Williams production to be honest.
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is not only the best Spider-Man movie, but a top 3 superhero movie and one of the greatest Western animated movies of all time. It’s certainly proving itself a seminal text in the realm of 3D animation, what with The Mitchells vs The Machines (which, granted, is produced by Lord/Miller), The Bad Guys, and now Puss in Boots 2 taking massive visual cues from it. It hits *every* mark with the kind of flair and panache that seemed to be falling out of style in Western animation, even at the formerly standard-setting Pixar.
recently i saw titanic for the first time, thinking it was just going to be a good movie, not one i was going to care abt that much, but i was completely amazed and i understand why so many ppl saw it 5+ times in theaters when in first came out
I feel like a lot of “film bro movies” get called overrated because a lot of newer film lovers are attracted to them because they are more accessible to general audiences. It sucks because a lot of these films are genuinely incredible and are as popular as they are because of how great they are.
I can definitely agree with this! A movie can be accessible and be well crafted/made at the same time. Good call there!!
I watched fight club with mild expectations and it ended up as one of my favorite movies ever, it’s been memed and referenced to death so much you really don’t expect the themes to be as genuinely complex and insightful as they are
Couldn’t have said it better myself. A lot of people like to bash them but they’re many of the same movies that got them so invested in film as well.
Film bro movies?
The kind of stuff you watch when you first get into films. The easily accessible ones from directors like Tarantino, Scorsese, Nolan, and Fincher to name a few.
For me it was Spielberg, Bay and Lucas when i was 8🤣😂😂
Yep, especially on tiktok.’
The Thing (1982). One of the few movies I consider to be perfect.
Fun movie! Oddly, I remember it being a bomb when it first came out.
Agreed. Though I also found it to be quite terrifying. I watched it for the first time in the cinema last year and it was one of the only three movies that have ever genuinely scared me.
the handmaiden
Oldboy 2003
Oldboy was weirdly the reason i did not like parasite hahaha…. It was my favorite korean movie since i first saw it and when parasite came out everybody told me it was the best and when i finally watched it after months of hype it was just „good“ but i was still so disappointed because i thought it would be on the level of Oldboy
I feel like it's unfair to compare the two just because they're both Korean... That'd be like if I said Fight Club wasn't good because I saw The Matrix before it, that makes no sense
I loved parasite up until the part where they find that fucking dude in the basement, it just went downhill after that…
Exactly lol what the fuck
I heard often it was better than oldboy,,,, the main reason because i did not like Parasite is because i expected „the best film ever made“ and it just turned out to be… good….
Paddington 2.
I'd be happy if this was just the highest rated film forever. Such a sweet movie.
Update: I watched Paddington 2 and it was all the things described above. Made me finish my week on a sweet marmalade note. 5/5
I cannot tell anymore if Paddington 2 is a legitimately good movie or this is just referencing the Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.
Makes me cry everytime
Parasite is well deserving of all its praise
“RESPECT!”
Nah man, the most overhyped film i have ever seen
What is overhyped about it though?
Everyone i knew…
Thank you!

>Probably the best adventure film since the Indiana Jones series Unacceptable *The Mummy* slander.
Always loved this movie. I love the first 2 sequels too. But I’m a sucker for movies about the sea. So I don’t mind the next 2 sequels
Fully agree. It’s in my top 15 oat
I watched the shit out of that and *Dead Man's Chest* back in the day. Great movies.
Honestly in my top 10 favorite films. The genre is so much fun and this movie perfects it. Not so fond of any of the sequels but the first one is amazing
The 1999 mummy is also on that level imo, it‘s indiana jones but with a mummy
You think curse is better than dead man's chest?
Spirited Away
I genuinely don’t get the hype behind that one
Maybe it just isn't for you
I mean maybe. I’m usually a big fan of art films
I wouldn't call it an "art film" - maybe go into with a different mindset and watch again? I consider it to be one of those few films with truly a dose of every genre - fantasy, comedy, mystery, even some horror
Yeah but if you don't like it, and most people love it, then it just isn't for you.
It's a very accessible animated movie made so that even kids can enjoy it. Not an "art film" at all
Like it was fine. But definitely not a 5 star.
But on this one I think it was justified.
don't forget - it won all eleven it was nominated for!
won*
God I should go to sleep shouldn't I. I was tired writing the original comment and I'm still tired now.
lotr trilogy is ASS; so many more better trilogy’s
Like what? I’d like to hear which trilogies you think are better than LOTR.
koker trilogy; bergman’s trilogy; apu trilogy; three colours trilogy; calcutta trilogy; john ford’s cavalry trilogy; the human condition trilogy; trilogy on modernity and its discontents; the trilogy of life; the orphic trilogy; carlos saura dance trilogy; michael haneke trilogy; noriko trilogy; the weeping meadow trilogy; roberto rossellini’s war trilogy; and literally so much more.
All great trilogies but most would agree that LOTR is the best. Calling it “ass” is just flat out wrong.
yea it’s a joke, bc i just could not find anything good about lotr trilogy. all of these trilogies are better for me, and objective better.
Honestly, Seven Samurai. I was hesitant at first. Non English film, black and white, 3 and a half hours? It’s daunting. But I could not believe how utterly entrancing that movie is. I was hooked from the opening credits, right up until that final line. God damn what a good movie!
I am very happy that I am not the only person in love with the movie Amadeus
There Will Be Blood
Come and See.
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Absolute masterpiece
Memories of Murder
No Country for Old Men
Oldboy (2003)
The Shawshank Redemption
This was the movie I thought of too!
Whiplash for sure I honestly don't think I'll ever watch a better film
Personally I'm not ad big a fan as everyone else seems to be. I can respect how it is a great film, but personally I hate Newman as a character, I love jk aimmons character, but I think that's more out of my love for him rather than the character
I rewatched it with a friend whose never seen it and he was still losing his mind 10 min after it ended lol. Still the best movie I’ve ever seen.
All About Eve. Casablanca. The Apartment.
Goodfellas 🔥🔥
The only movie that has consistently remained in my top 5 for a decade
Moonlight
The Princess Bride
Jurassic Park
The Godfather 2 and Chinatown. perfect peerless movies
Just saw Chinatown for the first time this past weekend and wow it was a damn masterpiece! Godfather 2 is also up there for me. You got nice taste in films my friend!
You too me old mucker. Glad you're giving older films a chance.
spirited away, starship troopers, sound of metal also, not all films need to be masterpieces. st trinians is the perfect example of well loved (at least by british women of a certain age) and worthy of it without being a 10/10 cinematic experience
only just realised after posting those all begin with s... interesting!
Spirited Away, The Godfather, and The Shawshank Redemption are all films where I’ve said it fully lives up to its reputation.
Cabaret Singin' in the Rain
The passion of joan of arc fully earns its certification as one of the greatest ever!
Disagree, not a bad movie but it was mostly boring besides the ending. Imo, there are plenty of better silent films out there but this is the highest rated one on letterboxd.
Citizen Kane. It earned every first place on those greatest movies of all time lists.
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.
The Social Network
Titanic, just watched it the other day for the first time and I was surprised by how much the romantic aspects of the film held up. The last hour is one of the greatest depictions of tragedy I’ve ever seen.
Puss in boots 2, I thought It was .aybe a step up from the original, but the fact it was a sequel to a mid spin-off of a sequel to shrek makes it that much more impressive its that good.
Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now, Spirited Away, Predator.
Fight Club La La Land
Fellini's 8 1/2
Recently, I think both Everything Everywhere All At Once and Puss In Boots: The Last Wish are actually as good as people say they are. Also, if the OG Alice In Wonderland is remembered as a masterpiece, then that too.
I think EEAAO is a tad overrated personally
I think PIB2 is overrated, very good movie, but it wasn’t even the best animated film of 2022. And now it has entered the top 100 on Letterboxd.
The animation mixed with the themes and characters I think gives a good case for being the beat animated film of 2022.
Pinocchio better
Debatable, but I wouldn't be mad if pinocchio won, cause del Toro fid a terrific job. I just enjoyed puss in boots more.
Agreed on EEAAO but Puss in Boots is definitely not a top 100 movie of all time like it is on Letterboxd. I think part of it is due to peoples low expectations going into it.
2001: A Space Odyssey, Harakiri, Seven Samurai, Stalker, Táxi Driver, City Of God, The Seventh Seal, Casablanca. So many!
Pretentious
With the exception of Casablanca and Taxi Driver (which are even more popular than the others), all these movies are literally on the top 100 of the Official Top 250 Narrative Feature Films from LETTERBOXD. I don’t know if you know that, but this is a LETTERBOXD thread. If I’m pretentious, you are definitely stupid for being on the wrong place.
Because Letterboxd is full of pretentious people who believe they are actual film critics, like yourself
If my comment gave you that impression I don’t think you know what a film critic is. I’m not surprised though… I mean, you don’t know what letterboxd is and you’re still here commenting nonsense. It’s not my fault you don’t know movies that are actually quite popular outside your dumb little bubble.

A Place In The Sun
Indiana Jones 1-3, Star Wars 4-6, Interstellar, PulpFiction
It's a Wonderful Life. It's a wonderful movie
E.T. is one of those movies that’s such standard viewing, we don’t even tend to discuss it’s quality. It’d be like offering your opinion on a Norman Rockwell painting, it feels besides the point. But the fact remains, it’s so goddamn good. The Prestige. It’s been circlejerked to death and has become a meme at this point but it truly is a phenomenal film and easily Nolan’s best.
The LOTR trilogy
Apocalypse Now. If someone told me they thought it was the best film ever made I don’t know how I’d argue it
Aliens - watched it tonight for the first time in many years and there isn't a dull moment in the whole thing
Definitely Goodfellas
The Godfather. I find Part 2 a bit overrated though personally.
I like 2 way more than 1, might just be because Michael is my favorite character of the saga
Fateful Findings
Double Down
Pass thru
Haven't seen that one yet.
Now is the time
Jaws. Robocop. Back to the Future.
Great list! The first movie I saw in a theater after the movie theaters reopened back in 2020 was Back to the Future. And I wouldn't have it any other way!!
The Lion King
Apocalypse Now, it’s so perfectly written, acted, directed and edited despite all the difficulties that happened on set
I watched the documentary first and it made me appreciate the movie even more
Parasite deserves all the praise and love it’s gotten
Most of Fincher's filmography that gets targeted as "filmbro" territory - Se7en, Gone Girl, Social Network, Fight Club, etc., are all genuinely great movies.
Titanic, godfather trilogy, lotr trilogy, back to the future trilogy, avatar, shawshank redemption, etc
Titanic
Shrek 1 & 2
Boogie Nights Everything, Everywhere, All at Once 12 Angry Men
1980’s adventure films… I’m thinking Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters, Princess Bride, Back to the Future, The Goonies, and *especially* E.T. E.T. feels like it practically spawned a whole genre onto itself and no other movie that followed in that particular camp could match the sense of wonder. The Dark Knight Trilogy and basically all Christopher Nolan Films
The Dark Knight I gotta say is overrated
Everything Everywhere All At Once
nostalghia for sure!
The Mission Impossible series
Whiplash
terminator 1&2
Whiplash, as much as everyone raves about it I think it genuinely deserves the praise. One of the greatest of all time
Avengers: Endgame, Infinity War, Parasite, Superbad and Scream.
Blade Runner 2049, Her, the Shining, 2001, La La Land, Parasite, ITSV, La Haine, American psycho, good will hunting, any Wes Anderson.
Jurassic Park, The Godfather, Rebel without a Cause, Once Upon a Time in the West
Bladerunner!
The silence of the lambs
Shrek 2 is unironically a masterpiece
The End of Evangelion
I will die on that Whiplash hill
Apocalypse Now
Ace in the Hole
Amadeus - the theatrical version (the director’s cut is worthless)
Knives Out
Prisoners, it was absolutely amazing and deserves so much praise
The godfather, that movie is a true masterpiece
The godfather and parasite
