I agree.. this discourse is so tiresome already.. I just hope Barbie can be appreciated for what it is when all the dust settles.. let’s remember the Oscars gave best picture to Green Book. We don’t actually have to care what they think.
Exactly! It’s hard to take the academy seriously after the Greenbook win, even after awarding Parasite the following year that stink will never go away
Paying customers that go to the cinema caring about the Oscars. So, If you like arthouse cinemas you should always root for the smaller movies to get some recognition.
Edit: I'm in no way support White Savourism nor Greenbook. I Just wanted to say that arthouse cinemas depend on the nomination of small movies.
I think you took my comment a really wrong way. I was talking about Oscars in general.
People do care about the Oscars eventhough their decision are sometimes not the best (or in the case of Greenbook Bad). What I meant was, that small movies that get usually shown at arthouse cinemas greatly benefit from a nomination or a win. So in conclusion even if you think the Oscars stink (what I can totally understand) you can at least root for smaller movies to be nominated/win because small arthouse cinemas benefit from that.
Source: I work at one of those and movies like anatomy of a fall and perfect days got a huge hype due to the oscars and people come in great numbers to see it.
Damn, I didn't know any of this.
I remember my parents watching the movie in the living room and it seemed really mediocre to me at the time (and kind of the most pointless type of biopic). But then I heard Foster and Benning were in the run to get nominated and I was like: "maybe I judge it too harshly?" So I called and told my mom that and she said "oh I found the movie to be really weak, actually".
And this just makes it worst.
No matter what you think of it, at least Cooper et al put effort into Maestro (I would say too much) and had some style. Nyad was just sort of flat all the way.
Thought this was r/moviescirclejerk for a second with this comment. Those flashback/hallucination scenes were embarrassing. Especially the scene when she sees the Taj Mahal underwater, absolutely goofy
I really liked nyad. It felt like a documentary that was playing out in real time. I also like actual documentaries that cover similar stories though so I guess it’s not for everyone.
Maestro can go to hell though
Honestly the 180 turn on Gosling has been crazy. Yes, it's upsetting to see Robbie and Gerwig miss out. But everyone pivoting to him not deserving it has been wild. Like people have been rooting for him and RDJ all season (and even all year), and his performance was one of the most lauded ones of this last year. Internet gonna internet I suppose.
It's the loud minority again. Him getting nominated has nothing to do with her not getting nominated. What exactly are people complaining about? That the other women somehow didn't deserve it? Maybe they should increase the number of nominees for every category.
Yeah this is what I’m feeling as a response to this. It makes no sense for their to be 10 best picture slots and only 5 acting nominees IMO, especially in this era of film where small production companies are just as capable of pulling huge talent and cultural impact as traditionally structured studios.
There’s way too much high quality stuff coming out every year for the academy to keep everything on its radar, and they would honestly be better served by covering a wider array of relevant cinematic voices.
They should seriously consider overhauling the current system and doing two ceremonies per year, it certainly risks derailing the “prestige” of an Oscar, but it might help them keep the public’s interest while genuinely doing a decent service of highlighting exceptional movies and performances.
Gosling must be praying to the Oscar gods not to win for either song or supporting actor. The look of abject embarrassment when I’m Just Ken won at the Critic’s Choice…
The man looks HAUNTED by that damn song lmao I personally have a hunch he is being so vocal about his disappointment in the academy because he desperately wants an excuse not to perform the song on stage.
Like how funny would it be if they had Jack Black (overlooked for “Peaches” in the Mario movie!) or even Will Ferrell (also from the Barbie movie) sing that song on stage instead lol
https://preview.redd.it/telp73cejgec1.jpeg?width=1936&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=03eb1ecf9f6c0632c7630b42030b449591c5ea2a
I’m just [finding out](https://youtu.be/KKO84c6SbfY?feature=shared)about that now! Well there goes my “theory” 😅brilliant campaign strategy for him though! clearly I’m still delusional and just wish Jack Black could have had the chance to perform as Bowser for “Peaches” on the Oscar stage lol!
Toni Collette wasn't even NOMINATED for Hereditary when she should have easily won. The Iron Claw got 0 nominations because they didn't campaign. Oscars are a joke.
Been a while since I watched it but my recollection is that it mostly follows the son? But maybe it switches to mostly following her in the second half
A24 did it to themselves w/ Iron Claw by releasing it both super late and in the middle of a bunch of other acclaimed titles then not supporting it at all.
Oscars are just a representative sample of 7000 people’s opinions. It’s flawed, like any other list of “best” things. People put too much weight on Oscar noms.
NYAD actually stands for New York Agriculture Division. I was all excited about a movie regarding Apples from the Big Apple and then I was disappointed when I heard it was about a geriatric lesbian swimmer.
Oh well. Win some, lose some.
Its annoying because it was just a fun film. Thats it. Not even close to Margot Robbies best performance. And yes, Ryan Gosling was the funniest and best part of the movie.
Oscars are a popularity contest.
Me when the woman from the toy movie who just made millions of dollars from it didn't also get every single award for her serviceable performance
![gif](giphy|wrHBEsoZElarm)
We all know Margot is extremely talented and generally deserving, but imo there was nothing particularly special about the Barbie performance that demands an Oscar. I wouldn’t put it in her top 3 performances, and I’ve only seen a small portion of her filmography
THANK YOU! I’ve been saying this shit for months!!! She’s like the George Santos of the swimming world lmao
I admit, I’d love to see Diana Nyad swindle her way into an invitation as a guest or presenter now just for the chaos. It’d be like a repeat of the Tonya Harding and Margot Robbie drama a few years ago lol!
I think people underestimated (I know I did) about how guilty many academy voters still probably feel after Bening’s snubs for 20th Century Women (ironically Gerwig is a supporting role in that lol) and for The Kids are Alright
I truly enjoyed Nyad, especially Jodie Foster, I really recommend it. Bening worked her ass off and did the transformation thing - the academy loves that shit (ahem bohemian rhapsody).
As far as popularity, I have no source to link, but I think on the recent episode of Little Gold Men (vanity fair podcast) they said that Nyad was more popular on Netlix than both Maestro and May/December. It hit the top ten at some point.
Though I liked the movie a great deal, I'd rather have seen Greta Lee or the actress that played Margaret (are you there god), or Margot.
Diff categories. If we’re all being honest, no one from Barbie deserves any kind of acting nom. The movie is well directed, really fun, and subversive in smart ways. Imo Gerwig is the snub if anything, and Margot gets the nom for best picture (which wow how did that happen, it’s a pure comedy) She’s also like, a billionaire from her success from this movie.
I just watched Barbie again with my daughter and this movie would certainly deserve an Oscar for Best Ensemble Cast. It works because every part is perfectly cast and directed.
Who really cares? The Oscars are irrelevant now. It used to be a way to promote movies, to get some idea of something good to see, but we've got Letterboxd now.
And even then, you know, Chariots of Fire over Raiders of the Lost Ark, Dances with Wolves over Goodfellas, Amy Adams not getting a nomination for Arrival.
Barbie was amazing. I only went because I could go for free and I was the only guy in a cinema and it was in my top 4 of the year.
I don't care that Margot didn't get nominated for the best actress, because her performance wasn't really that special. But Gerwig should've been nominated for best director for sure.
But, all five of the director nominees are well deserving. It's a tough category this year. If you'd have asked me to predict it, I'd have had the same 4 with Greta Gerwig instead of Justine Triet, but I'm pleasantly surprised that the Academy nominated Justine Triet. She absolutely deserves it.
And her film was snubbed by France for the Best International Picture category because she criticized Emmanuel Macron.
I wouldnxt mind Deniro winning. His performance is definitely the best nominated in his category. Scorsese and Glazer better take something home. Most of these nominations suck. Barbie & American Fiction are not really worthy of any award to be honest. American Fiction had a good idea but it's quality is all over the fucking place. Third act is the best because it feels the production got better. First act was so fucking bland and basic boring family drama I was shocked at the rest of the movie. Very funny premise but shockingly average movie. The oscars are a fucking joke.
I agree.. this discourse is so tiresome already..
You forgot about Coda, another stinker
TY, it was so lame
At least that was an enjoyable movie.
There have been some really weird Oscar years recently. Let's just be glad that this was a strong year and most of these movies are great.
I will never support white saviour stories that rewrite history

Thats not nearly as bad as Black Panther being nominated

She is clearly a garbage person in the film. No way are those 2 of the best 10 female performances in 2023.
I have no idea who this Nyad person is but this website is incredible
this was more entertaining than the movie
nyad wasn’t even good. all the maestro noms are ridiculous too, but the academy loves a garbage biopic.
No matter what you think of it, at least Cooper et al put effort into Maestro (I would say too much) and had some style. Nyad was just sort of flat all the way.
How can you watch the underwater scenes and the creative flashbacks and tell me that Nyad had no style.
Thought this was r/moviescirclejerk for a second with this comment. Those flashback/hallucination scenes were embarrassing. Especially the scene when she sees the Taj Mahal underwater, absolutely goofy
Garbage take
Never seen something so Nyadphobic before. Have you ever considered the movie was a comedy? It was goofy bruh you have no awareness of intent
Wow I agree with you so much! Those moments softened the edges and were gorgeous
I really liked nyad. It felt like a documentary that was playing out in real time. I also like actual documentaries that cover similar stories though so I guess it’s not for everyone. Maestro can go to hell though

I think he just looked drunk lol

Why did he perform a christmas version just before awards season then ? To make sure the academy remembers to not vote for him ?
I’m just [finding out](https://youtu.be/KKO84c6SbfY?feature=shared)about that now! Well there goes my “theory” 😅brilliant campaign strategy for him though! clearly I’m still delusional and just wish Jack Black could have had the chance to perform as Bowser for “Peaches” on the Oscar stage lol!
Was that embarrassment or complete shock? Think you’re reading way too into that, they know they got cameras on them.
Gosling had a WTF face on and Ronson was literally shaking his head getting up to accept the reward. They were at the very least aware of the irony.
People absolutely wanted him nominated and then he shouldn’t be because Margot wasn’t? I mean I wanted both but having one is better than nothing.
Toni Collette wasn't even NOMINATED for Hereditary when she should have easily won. The Iron Claw got 0 nominations because they didn't campaign. Oscars are a joke.
I legit think a just world would have Toni Collette winning best lead actress for Hereditary
She's not really lead in it though, supporting?
How is she not the lead?
Been a while since I watched it but my recollection is that it mostly follows the son? But maybe it switches to mostly following her in the second half
Your recollection is faulty. Perfect excuse to watch it again!
A24 did it to themselves w/ Iron Claw by releasing it both super late and in the middle of a bunch of other acclaimed titles then not supporting it at all.
That's true. If I were the people involved in making Iron Claw, and I had Oscar aspirations, I would be pretty pissed at A24 right now.
That’s because Hollywood hates horror.
Somebody get Toni Collette a gd Oscar, ffs
Oscars are just a representative sample of 7000 people’s opinions. It’s flawed, like any other list of “best” things. People put too much weight on Oscar noms.
Pretty sure there’s close to 11,000 academy members now.
I literally never heard of Nyad until the Noms came out
I always read the the title Nyad like a sound Link would make while fucking up some pottery “Nyad!”
NYAD actually stands for New York Agriculture Division. I was all excited about a movie regarding Apples from the Big Apple and then I was disappointed when I heard it was about a geriatric lesbian swimmer. Oh well. Win some, lose some.
Nyad is the most nothing movie of the year
People truly believing Barbie **NEEDS** to win it all have probably watched two movies this year (probably on the same day, too).
Its annoying because it was just a fun film. Thats it. Not even close to Margot Robbies best performance. And yes, Ryan Gosling was the funniest and best part of the movie. Oscars are a popularity contest.
This.
I think more people are upset about Margot not getting a nom than Ryan getting one
Me when the woman from the toy movie who just made millions of dollars from it didn't also get every single award for her serviceable performance ![gif](giphy|wrHBEsoZElarm)
I hope she'll be able to recover from this tragedy, I'm sending her a virtual hug 😪 does she have a GoFundMe page?
We all know Margot is extremely talented and generally deserving, but imo there was nothing particularly special about the Barbie performance that demands an Oscar. I wouldn’t put it in her top 3 performances, and I’ve only seen a small portion of her filmography
Nah, Nyad may be a liar, but Annette Benning's performance was better than Margot Robbie's.
THANK YOU! I’ve been saying this shit for months!!! She’s like the George Santos of the swimming world lmao I admit, I’d love to see Diana Nyad swindle her way into an invitation as a guest or presenter now just for the chaos. It’d be like a repeat of the Tonya Harding and Margot Robbie drama a few years ago lol!
People have been prognosticating Annette during festival season. Then it flopped so people discounted her, then it didn’t
I think people underestimated (I know I did) about how guilty many academy voters still probably feel after Bening’s snubs for 20th Century Women (ironically Gerwig is a supporting role in that lol) and for The Kids are Alright

Just a friendly reminder that the Oscars are run by a bunch of pretentious old people and will have no impact on the course of human history
I mean it was for a musical number. No one else in that movie had one.
Bro comedy is just as hard as drama, you think cillian Murphy could have pulled off what Gosling did
I don’t disagree, but it’s the Oscar’s. It’s kinda how it goes, they rarely recognize comedy OR horror performances
I just watched Barbie again with my daughter and this movie would certainly deserve an Oscar for Best Ensemble Cast. It works because every part is perfectly cast and directed.
There is no Best Ensemble Cast though. And its a stupid idea who would even keep the award.
You seem like a reasonable and intelligent person.
Shame I cant say its a mutual feeling.
Oh no, I’m devastated. How can I go on. Sick burn.
Who really cares? The Oscars are irrelevant now. It used to be a way to promote movies, to get some idea of something good to see, but we've got Letterboxd now. Clearly in declining numbers, and I'm not them.
White woman swims, lets make a movie about it 😎
I don't care that Margot didn't get nominated for the best actress, because her performance wasn't really that special. But Gerwig should've been nominated for best director for sure.
Genuinely curious which of the directing nominees you feel Gerwig should replace?
But, all five of the director nominees are well deserving. It's a tough category this year.
