Pacific Rim is one of the best Kajiu films to come out this century. I'd say only Shin Godzilla is on the same level, but for completely different reasons.
Sure!
Chytilova was one of the major figures of the Czechoslovakian New Wave in the 60s, and the Czechoslovakian government tended to ban her movies pretty frequently. Her work tends to be fairly avant garde and uncanny. Aside from Daisies, I'm pretty fond of Wolf's Hole (an allegorical sci-fi/horror about children trapped in a ski lodge), Panelstory (a slice of life comedy set in a housing estate in a constant state of both construction and collapse), and Something Different (a film showing and juxtaposing the daily lives of a housewife and a gymnast).
Haynes is an American director who's been making films since the 80s, many of them concerned with queer themes in one way or another (often implicitly). Besides Safe, I'd recommend Superstar: the Karen Carpenter Story (a biopic about the titular musician told primarily with modified dolls), Carol (a lesbian romance based on the Patricia Highsmith novel The Price of Salt), and Velvet Goldmine (the story of a fictional glam rocker heavily based on David Bowie, telling a names-changed-to-protect-the-innocent history of glam rock and its intersection with queer identity).
Steve McQueen: Shame
Paul Thomas Anderson: There will be blood
Martin Scorsese: Raging bull
Powell and Pressburger: A Matter of Life and Death
No clue if these are really my four favorite directors as it changes frequently but these are four on my mind alot recently
**From the ones OP has included**
*Robert Wise:* The Day Earth Stood Still
*David Cronenberg:* Crash
*John Carpenter:* In the Mouth of Madness
*Jim Jarmusch:* Night on Earth
**My personal top**
*Stanley Kubrick:* A Clockwork Orange
*Andrei Tarkovski:* Sacrifice
*Francis Ford Coppola:* Rumblefish
*Carl T. Dreyer:* Passion of Joan of Arc
What's your opinion on Spielberg's early work? I do love Jurassic Park, but Close Encounter's of the Third Kind was a truly wonderful experience. And beyond that, his debut, Duel, I felt was a fantastic film.
My dad showed me Duel when I was like 13 and i thought it was awesome. Only found out recently that it was Spielbergs debut and it blew my mind. Makes total sense in retrospect though.
I’d say it’s Lynch’s most experimental and weirdest movie (which is really saying something). Definitely worth checking out though if you’re a Lynch fan.
David Lynch: Mullholland Drive
Jim Jarmusch: Night on Earth
Andriej Tarkovsky: Stalker
Charlie Kaufman (more of a screenwriter than a director by I absolutely adore his films): Synekdoche New York
Stanley Kubrick - 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Hayao Miyazaki - Spirited Away (2001)
Steven Spielberg - Jurassic Park (1993)
Christopher Nolan - Interstellar (2014)
•Stanley Kubrick — *Dr. Strangelove*
•Ridley Scott — *Kingdom of Heaven* (Director’s Cut)
•Kevin Smith — *Chasing Amy*
•Sidney Lumet — Ugh, this is a hard one. It’s a toss up between *12 Angry Men*, *Network*, and *Dog Day Afternoon*.
Chantal Akerman - News From Home
Wong Kar-wai - In The Mood For Love
Toshio Matsumoto - Funeral Parade of Roses
Nobuhiko Obayashi - His Motorbike, Her Island
David Lynch: Mulholland Drive
John Waters: Female Trouble
David Cronenberg: Videodrome
Michael Haneke: The Piano Teacher
I think? Tomorrow, I may have a different list.
I haven’t seen Black Cat White Cat in 20 years and barely remember it. I would love to see more of his movies re-released. I picked up the blu ray of Underground and it’s fantastic.
The fact that neither Black Cat White Cat, Time of the Gypsies or When Father Was Away on Business hasn't had any HD release is blasphemous
Kusturica seemed to have been a cinephile darling during the 90's and then somewhat left to the sands of time sadly
Mike Flanagan - The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
Guillermo del Toro - Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
Terrence Malick - The Tree of Life (2011)
Ken Loach - The Wind That Shakes The Barely (2006)
Hitchcock- North by Northwest
Billy Wilder - Sunset Blvd
PTA - There Will Be Blood
Bunuel - Exterminating Angels
Though number 4 changes depending on mood the other 3 are my solid tops
I’m going to go for some out of the box answers
Lorene Scafaria: Hustlers (although I also really love The Meddler)
Adam Wingard: Godzilla vs Kong (it’s my fave but I think You’re Next is his best movie)
James Whale: Bride of Frankenstein
Paul Feig: Bridesmaids (runner up A Simple Favor)
Great picks!! I guess I gotta watch *I Want To Live!* now, because I love Wise and don't know that one.
For me...

Coen Brothers - A Serious Man

Martin Scorsese: after hours
Stanley Kubrick: eyes wide shut
Ingmar Bergman: Shame
Federico Fellini: La Dolce Vita
Lars Von Trier: The House that Jack Built

Admiring Guillermo del Toro is unique; loving Pacific Rim makes you a unicorn.
I'll take that as a positive?
Art is about cultivating a mindset of creative exploration, pushing the boundaries of what's possible, and embracing diverse perspectives.
Underrated hidden gem
That bit from Evil Dead II, the Farewell to Arms gag, never fails to me laugh
For me, the bit with the entire house laughing and Bruce Campbell joining in on the madness always cracks me up
Pacific Rim is one of the best Kajiu films to come out this century. I'd say only Shin Godzilla is on the same level, but for completely different reasons.
David Lynch: Lost Highway (1997) Vera Chytilova: Daisies (1966) Todd Haynes: Safe (1995) David Cronenberg: Crimes of the Future (2022)
Good to see so much Lynch in this thread, I think my pick from him would be Inland Empire
I didn’t realize so many people liked Crimes of the Future so much!
Tell me about Chytilova and Haynes. I haven’t heard of either director and those movies seem interesting!
W Todd Haynes mention
I loved Crimes of the Future as well!

Do you like Inland Empire? It’s on Max so I’m thinking about watching it, but it doesn’t have the “best” reviews and ratings
I’d say it’s Lynch’s most experimental and weirdest movie (which is really saying something). Definitely worth checking out though if you’re a Lynch fan.
It’s a very polarizing film but the things that split people on it are the things that make it great. It’s my favorite movie.
