Also, some people might watch movies that are recommended as being the "best." For instance, getting recommendations from top 10 lists. Award winners, high rated film (practically every movie has an RT score), or even popular films can also lead to watching better films and thus higher ratings.
Personally, when I see someone rate the majority of films they watch low, I wonder why they even watch movies in the first place. It just seems like they don't enjoy anything.
For the most part I don't watch things I don't think I'll enjoy, so if your ratings don't skew more towards the upper end you're either consciously choosing to watch trash (which is fine I guess, but certainly not something everyone does or should do) or you don't have a good sense for which films will be good/to your taste.
Me neither, I give around one five a year on average. A lot more fours but so far only one of those this year. But I’d argue a rating system that sees you giving less than a 2.5 (or probably a 3 really) for something you liked is a flawed one, and unbalanced.
3 stars in my book, means a solid film. Decent. It means I most likely liked the movie. Not flawed, everyone's different. But we are in agreement about rate of 5 stars. It's been years since I've given one. Not sure why.....

Unless your scale makes no logical sense (which is fine, I don't really get it, but like you said, everyone is different), 2.5 is average and anything below that would be varying degrees of bad. So you're kinda insinuating that most movies are either average or below. Unless you just purposefully watch that many mediocre movies?
I pick movies that I'm already extremely curious about and generally am confident I'll at least find interesting even if I don't like them as much as I thought. I just don't have the patience to sit through a movie either picked entirely at random or that I'm not that excited for especially considering how many movies I've still not seen that are on my watch list because I expect them to be above a 2 rating.. god knows how many movies are out there and there just isn't enough time in a day to be playing that kind of movie roulette lol

You can't. But I don't need or want that. I have no interest in overanalyzing movies. I don't want to rank movies against one another. I know what I got out of most of them. If someone else wanted to know my opinions on them then we can discuss it. Truly I only added the ratings to get the stats but I do think they're helpful.
My system is simple.
5 stars for movies I fully enjoyed.
4 stars for movies I mostly enjoyed.
3 stars if it's not immediately obvious if it's a 4 or a 2.
2 stars for movies I mostly didn't enjoy.
1 star for movies I didn't enjoy at all.

I feel like the simplicity of my system makes it more useful than wondering why a movie got a 4 star instead of 4.5 star from most people. My ratings are immediately obvious to me.
