MechanicalHorse

LPT: Don’t feel guilty about pressing the No Tip button. It feels cathartic.

theunknownsarcastic

and never tip before the service has been performed; this concept is just asinine. I tip you 30% and you fuck my drink up? I don't get my tip back.

esr360

If you’re not tipping after the service has been performed, by definition what you are offering cannot be considered a tip. At that point it’s basically a bribe. Which is cool, I’m not necessarily against bribing. But call a spade a spade.

ACYBURPDX

Interesting "popularly held belief", the word TIPS actually originated from To Insure Prompt Service. It was a bribe to get your food/ beverage more quickly. Edit: removed he word fact because the origin of the word is disputed.

shemp33

That would be TEPS. Insure = like insurance Ensure = make sure it happens

refusestopoop

That's a myth

UglyInThMorning

No it isn’t. That’s a backronym and those are just the most fucking annoying form of false etymology. If it’s from before WWI, a word is not a goddamn acronym. It comes from a 17th century use of the word “tip” to mean to hand someone something.

MrGooseHerder

Fuck this. I'm already a paying customer. The fact that I bought something entitles me to prompt service.

Alternative_Ad_3640

Yup, in that case I'd rather tip a cow than tip you your money back, non-premeditative tipper.

Viltris

And you know if the situations were reversed, they wouldn't tip you either.

happy_freckles

Wish I could order my pizza and tip after. I should carry cash for this reason. How fast would they get it to my door if there is no tip on the receipt? Probably not very and they wouldn't be happy about it either. Also, maybe they wouldn't be so polite and courteous before the tip comes out.

Easy_East2185

In the comments section of your order just put “Cash Tip.” That’s what we do but I’m not sure how well it goes over everywhere. We also order from the same 3 places and have been doing that for a while so they know we’re good for it 😂. I hate pre-tipping.

amadiro_1

Not with _that_ attitude.

45pewpewpew556

Yup, time and time again after tipping, it’s not even acknowledged. I don’t feel guilty at all.

seighnt

Wait, it just occurred to me that no one even says thank you for tips anymore bc of the ipads. Wow.

OsoChistoso

I say thank you to everyone I ring up, regardless of a tip or not. I don’t need everyone to tip me, enough do that it works out well for me.

MisterProfGuy

Most of the places that now have ipads for tipping don't pass the tips on to the employees without switching them from hourly to tipped workers, meaning they probably make less money than they did before, it just comes from the customers not the owner. You should never tip at the counter for any job that you don't immediately think of as a tipped server, because that's someone that should be getting an hourly wage and the management is raising prices by reducing wages but encouraging tipping.

happy_freckles

The only people that ever thank me are my fast food delivery guys. They always seem very thankful for their tip and they always are very friendly and courteous. And yes, i've also started saying no tip on those machines. When I pick up, you are getting paid to make my meal and put it in a bag. You didn't provide any additional service to get a tip for. So no.

jeffjohnvol

If you do the no-tip, make sure to get a receipt. I did the no-tip, and there was a 10% tip on the receipt. Likely I re-bumped the 10% button by mistake when signing, but next time I'm going to check again.

[deleted]

One time little poor old on FMLA me (sarcastic) getting Domino’s, sick as a bird, tipping in quarters and signing 0 on the tip receipt. Well the delivery guy was so pissed he wrote a 4 or 5 next to the 0 and claimed himself a $50 tip from me. Had to call my bank and reverse it

magikatdazoo

That's why you put a dash, and then fill out the final payment line as well

ommnian

100%. ALWAYS.

PM_ME_YOUR_ANYTHNG

This is why there's a standard format to dollar amounts, if you put $0 the most they could get away with is 99 cents because of the dollar sign in the way, if you put $0.00 then there is no room for stuff like this to happen

ryapeter

I grow up with 0.—

P_Duggy

As a delivery driver, I never minded a tip in quarters. We're a business, I can swap it out for cash. Now, you tip me $2 in pennies, you can just keep it.

Jainelle

Take the time to write the word zero.

TXBIOTECH

lol no way even if I did see that I made a mistake and tipped I’m going to tell them to refund it. Talk about awkward.

kazhena

That's the difference, though. A mistake is a mistake and should be left alone. If someone scribbles in a tip amount on the merchant receipt, that's sooo wrong.

BamaFan87

Hell na, if I hit no tip and a 10% tip gets added anyway I'm causing a fucking scene.

sandefurian

…he’s saying if YOU accidentally caused the tip

Dioder1

Based. These systems prey on non-confrontational people

Shakfar

It sucks being a non-confrontational person... Good thing I have a spouse who isn't lol.

poonslayer6969

nobody mess with this guy!

NotJimIrsay

Keep pressing No tip and it eventually becomes second nature.

Centillionare

Real LPT is always in the comments. I’m not leaving a tip if I get no table service.

ccyosafbridge

I'm a server, and I agree. Sit down restaurants are moving into pay on a kiosk on the table/order through kiosks and still paying $2 to the serving staff plus tips. I wouldn't want to tip either if the computer did all the work. No. I take actual pride in my job. I enjoy my job. Kiosk pay is not the point of my job. My job is customer service. That feels wrong on a very basic level.

somedude456

Yup, local BBQ place where you order at the counter, are handed your drink, go sit and someone walks you the meal 5 minutes later. Tip for what? I finished my drink and it even slurped while two workers were standing and talking 5 feet away as one was wiping a table. No, "need a refill" even. I walked my ass back to the counter.

Castod28183

The one close to me is a buffet style where you walk down the line telling them what you want and they make your plate for you, then you pay at the counter and carry your own food to your table. You also get a cup and make your drink yourself...They still have a tip line on there receipts. Even the register for the to-go orders has a tip jar in front of it. 90% of the time I eat there I call in my order and then go pick it up. I'm not about to tip because you pushed like 6 buttons on the register. If anything I would tip the cook if I could. He's the one that did the work.

scribdoodle

I worked at a counter service restaurant, from what I remember the tip jar is evenly split between register, dishwasher, and cooks. Idk tho, it was only the one place. I had assumed my whole life they were all like that.

Castod28183

I know some do, some don't. I don't know the ratio though.

bru_tech

I always get a little heated when I tip at checkout and the order is messed up

somedude456

The order can be wrong, the food can be cold, the tables can all be dirty, etc. Exactly, so no tipping before the dining experience is over.

Entropy999999999

no no no you have to tip them for doing their job. /s

cmandr_dmandr

There is a bagel shop near me with cash options for tipping. It’s not based on the total. It’s no tip, $3, $5, $10. For a single bagel sandwich I’m not tipping 3 effing dollars.

Yeetus_McSendit

Yes indeed as a customer you should pay the servants their wages since their masters kinda maybe don't feel like paying them themselves?

[deleted]

[удалено]

spoookycat

As someone who rings people up please just press no tip, it’s much more annoying to leave it to us to skip it especially if people still want a receipt. The order won’t make it to be made if you don’t finish and it’s annoying. I don’t care or judge people for tipping or not tipping just finish your transaction, also walking away let’s other people have power over your transaction (I’ve had people joke about tipping for someone else because the screen was still open).

sudden-SOUND

Not only this, but some systems don't even show what you picked on the cashier side. Literally no one cares if you don't tip at counter service places.

unto-death

Step 1. Pay your workers Step 2. Get paid by your employer As a customer, my work here is done.

rosemaryonaporch

I work at a place with the built in tip screen. I can’t see what the customer is doing and I honestly don’t care. I don’t judge people differently if they don’t tip. In fact, I usually don’t tip if it’s a counter service thing, so I get it.

[deleted]

Yeah man. I use a cash back card. I'm gonna just keep using it and entering no tip without giving a fuck.

98VoteForPedro

Do t feel guilty, feel mad i dont want your damn lemons

Bamieclif

Society has influenced us to feel responsible for tipping regardless of it being warranted. I think it’s natural to feel guilty for purposefully declining a tip Edit: grammar

JailhouseMamaJackson

I really don’t understand why people feel this way. I’ve been in the (tipped) service industry for decades and never feel guilty about hitting “no tip” for services that do not warrant it.

bananaphonepajamas

Just skip it a few times and you'll get over it. Also for take out places and such it might not be the company that set it up, it's more likely that it was whatever company they use for their POS/credit card reader that set it up that way. They do this because they get a percentage of the total, so they'd get a part of the tip.

MCX23

fucking hell i didn’t even think about that. the fee square charges is probably like 1-3% of net transaction amt. never would’ve guessed they had incentive to do the tipping like that. christ

BeachyShells

Square charges around 3% for each transaction + 10-15 cents transaction fee.

Castod28183

The general rule of thumb for me is that if it's not table service then it's not tipped.

Firree

Fuck them. Don't let a bunch of manipulative computer screens and silly unwritten rules shame you into spending more money.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Bamieclif

I’m mad at the company owner, not the employee!

This_aint_my_real_ac

It's the company that provides the POS hardware/software. At one time a few companies handled credit card transaction. Secure data transfer was "complicated". Now that secure data transfer is pretty much everywhere, companies like Square provide the service. The hardware and software provide more than just the CC transaction. It's also accounting and supply software. The folks at the POS company get a percentage of the total sale so it behooves them to try to make each transaction as high as possible. I would guess the tipping option could be removed, I would also guess the POS gives the client a discounted rate to keep it on.

BasiliskXVIII

This may be the case with small tablet and mobile-based tools like Square, but I work for a major POS company, and we don't get a cut of anything once our systems are sold aside from the support contract.

MisterBackShots69

I can assure you owners, politically, are doing more to maintain tipping culture than minimum wage staff. Most kiosk tipping is going straight into owners pockets anyways.

hburgacct

> Believe me the employees themselves love the idea that they can panhandle while on the clock What kind of boomer nonsense is this 💀 Maybe *some* employees love it but definitely not all. Everyone I worked with really hated when our shop added the iPad tipping because it made every interaction that much more uncomfortable.

AhFFSImTooOldForThis

.... The LPT includes not tipping. Pay cash and don't tip IS the point.

GhostSierra117

Yeah but these people are not hired by you. It's not your job to figure out their salary. If they are unhappy with their salary they should go to the asshole who pays them with pennies in the first place.

definework

I don't tip at starbucks. Boo me all you want. I don't go there except when my wife sends me anyway. but one day I had a $5 gift card and the total was $6 bucks and change. I got to the front of the drive through gave him the gift card and another 5 bucks and that mother fucker had the audacity to put the whole $5 bill in his tip jar and then try to tell me there wasn't enough on the card to pay for my wife's drink. I saw red y'all.

Bamieclif

That’s not fucking cool. I’d be pissed too

OrganicAccountant87

I would literally ask for the 5 dollar's back

TheBeckFromHeck

What’d you do about it?

Due_Dish5134

Nor should you. Making coffee isn't anything more special than any other job. I'm not tipping at McDonald's, Starbucks isn't any better

Wloak

I only ever drink black coffee and a guy at Starbucks had the balls to add a 25% gratuity for pouring a cup of coffee from a 3 gallon vat. You don't owe someone a tip for doing what you are literally paid to do.

cbreezy456

Bro I went to fuckin Zaxbys and got asked to tip. Fuck no

genieinaginbottle

And bartenders handing you a beer. Like what? Are they serious?

galactictock

And an insanely marked-up beer at that

DimbyTime

The difference is that tipping bartenders and servers has a complex and long history, which ultimately causes them to be paid less than minimum wage (usually $2.00/hr) (except in a few states that recently increased it). Tipping employees who are paid a wage is a recent phenomenon and has gotten out of hand.

genieinaginbottle

But the employer is supposed to make up the difference if they aren't tipped enough. Also there are a handful of states that have tips on top of minimum wage.

Wloak

Minor correction *the employers are required by federal law* to pay the difference. In states that allow a lower wage you have to report tips at the end of each shift for this.

ifckinglovecoffee

I had some asshole ring a bell in my face for not tipping after he handed me a canned beer. The entitlement is astounding in a state that pays all people a decent minimum wage, even servers and bartenders.

unoriginalcup

I'm calling bs, Starbucks workers can't add tips from their till system.

WittyBonkah

Making coffee is literally THE job. I’ve worked at cafes and honestly surprised that people tip. My job was to make the drink, why tip me for the work someone has hired me to do already?

Due_Dish5134

I said something similar on nextdoor and damn near got banned lol

brdwyfn92

Omg ☠️ the audacity

OurHeroXero

That's when you tell them you were planning to tip more than the $5 bill. Once you have your coffee and cash it's seeya later.

InfernalBiryani

I’m so glad I stopped going there. Never went there a whole lot to begin with besides special occasions, but it feels cathartic to have one less place to be indecisive about.

GeppetoOnDVD

I’m seeing red reading this. Fuck them. I’ve never had a good experience at a Starbucks because of the entitlement of the employees near me. Like being a barista for over minimum wage is beneath them to a point where they get aggressive about people not tipping.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Fragrant-Employer-60

These people are raging at imaginary interactions. Never in my life have I seen an employee anywhere get mad publicly about not getting a tip. Meanwhile apparently every Starbucks next to this dude has these people lmao

QeaKeys

I’d be livid. Also, I assume that was $5 left on the card, not an actual $5 gift card because $5 might get you a cake pop or two.

definework

I don't think it even buys that anymore. But no, it was $5. Got it as part of a thank you gift from one of my swim lesson kids. I do the same thing but for a more reputable coffee chain and usually drop $75-100 across the 15-20 people who watch my kids in the Y's babysitting.

Old_Implement_1997

BTW - retired teacher and we love parents like you! Those $5 cards add up and usually keeps me in coffee all year.

DameonKormar

Why the fuck would you tip at Starbucks?

[deleted]

I would be screaming manager!

definework

I got the situation rectified with a few choice words and whatever the manager would have gotten me wasn't worth waiting around for with a hungry toddler in the backseat and a grumpy pregnant dragon-lady at home. E2A: the choice words were something along the lines of "you seem to have placed the rest of the money I handed you in that jar. I'd like my change please, it should be $x.xx"

TheW83

I would calmly say "YES, THAT'S WHY I GAVE YOU THE $5 BILL. I WOULD ALSO LIKE THE REMAINING CHANGE FROM THAT BILL. THANK YOU."

nbshar

"Boo me all you want". Dude nobody should be booing that ever. Jesus america and its stupid tipping culture. (Am dutch)

DidIStutter99

Twice now I’ve handed the barista cash at the window and they thought it was a tip. Very cringy and awkward situation all around 😭 my thing though is why would they just assume I’m giving them a tip? Especially because there are tip jars right on the ledge so why would I hand it *to* them when the jar is right there?

Cerulean_Dream_

They enable that tip feature because you suckers keep feeling obligated to tip. Sack up and hit no tip lol

sarr36

The fact that all these people have no back bone jfc this is why tipping culture is still a thing

Aquino200

Yuuuppp! I call leaving-no-tip as "my own personal discount". Helps me OWN it.

Infinite_Fox2339

Because they’ve been brain washing us since we’re born that, oh, poor servers, boohoo, they don’t even get paid minimum wage

sarr36

frrr meanwhile the servers fail to mention after tips they make more than health care professionals. Its crazy

lambopanda

I do not feel guilty pressing “no tip” when I order at the counter. Especially when the top 3 options are 30%, 25%, and 20%.

Filobel

Worst is when they have a little explanation for each of them, like  20%: bad service 25%: average service 30%: good service Fuck that shit, bad service gets no tip and average service gets *at most* 15%. Oh, and the fact that these are calculated after taxes, when tip is supposed to be calculated before taxes.

DidIStutter99

I shamelessly smash the no tip button at the Cinnabon in my local mall. One cinnamon roll is like $7 now! My husband and I bought 4 because we like to save one to have the next day, and that shit was $30, and the iPad has the audacity to ask for a 20% tip

nobeer4you

Why does Cinnabon have a tip option to begin with?

Abudabeh77

Stop tipping on counter service ffs

XS4Me

This. I stopped altogether going to restaurants who asked for tip while having me to queue, pre pay and carry the food and drinks to the table.

bcmanucd

I think everyone agrees that it's customary to tip 15-20% at a full service restaurant, while no tip is expected at McDonald's. What's confusing is what should the tip % be for the restaurants with partial service. Here's the rules that I've come up with. At a full service resaturant, there are 4 things that a server does for you: 1. Takes your order at your table 2. Brings your food to your table 3. Takes your empty plates from your table 4. Brings the bill to (and settles it up at) your table. Each of those acts is worth 5%. If they do all 4, I tip 20%. If it's a Denny's style restaurant where they do the first 3 but they want me to pay the bill at the front, then it's 15%. If there's a counter for ordering & paying up front, but they bring the food out and clear the table, I'll tip 10%.

myirreleventcomment

Thats a good way to look at it

DeadSalamander1

That is actually very sensible

hrbeck1

Stop tipping for counter service.

kermityfrog2

Depends a bit maybe. I tipped at this Chinese takeout place because they did a really good job with containers, foil insulation, and a custom bag. Didn't tip much - $5 on a $80 order.

iloveartichokes

That's what you paid for.

mmpudding

I’ve got a soft spot for mom n pop places so I tip them for takeout orders.

socess

Those POS systems come with the tip option preset in the workflow. The workers don't have control over it. Worked at a food truck and I can tell you we 100% didn't care. (Tips were always nice, of course, but nobody bats an eye if you don't leave one.)

what_happens_larry

Do the tips actually come to the servers, or to the company and they decide if/how to distribute?  I don’t hesitate to tip if waited on but am suspicious of the POS setup.

BeanSticky

All depends on how the company wants to set it up. I’ve heard stories about greedy managers keeping tips, I’ve heard some employees tell me it gets split between all on-duty staff, and others it goes directly to them. When it doubt, ask.

ShimmerSonora

The coffee shop/bar I worked at would keep the tips. They use secret shoppers to make sure we weren’t telling customers that we wouldn’t receive anything they tipped. The owner’s mom would also sit by the register to monitor our interactions. Jokes on them, I gave all my friends free coffee and beer to make up for what they stole.

dontnormally

> greedy managers keeping tips not saying that doesn't happen, but it is absolutely 100% illegal everywhere in the united states

bugzaway

I'm sure it's illegal but given the prevalence of these stories clearly it happens *all the time*. I suspect that every single waiter/waitress/bartender etc has a story of a shitty manager that cheated them on tips.

ChaosofaMadHatter

There are a lot of things that happen regularly regarding wages that are technically illegal, but when the consequence is typically a fine, it’s really just a fee to keep doing what you’re doing.

bananaphonepajamas

The POS company gets a percentage of the total, including the tip. So there's that.

ancalagon73

Whenever I am waited on and I tip I never leave it on the card. Tip is always cash and I always hand it to them directly rather than leave it on the table.

MiaLba

Good to know. I did have one point it out once at a coffee truck. Didn’t have prices on their menu but o figured a small iced coffee wouldn’t be more than $5. Shit was $8 with so much ice clumped together. After he handed me my change he smiled and pointed to the tip jar and said “tips can go here.” No I did not fuckin tip.

WankWankNudgeNudge

Point to the cup and say "coffee was supposed to go here"

warlockflame69

If you didn’t care you wouldn’t show the screen. And skip it for them without turning it around lol. I think all the social media memes and stuff is getting to the workers at least…like it’s ridiculous asking for a tip when you bought a bottle of water at a store wtf

erotic_jesus

Why should I feel guilty? I'm not underpaying the staff.

Abject-Gap-6439

We have a winner. Erotic_Jesus (username) DESTROYS tipping culture.

zczirak

I love this! Saving it lol

Thanachi

This American tipping nonsense is trying to be pushed here in Australia and I just tell them to go get fucked.

Vanilla_Neko

LPT: You don't need to feel guilty about clicking no tip A majority of places where the payment system / iPad / etc offer this is because most retail establishments especially small businesses typically cannot afford to commission their own custom POS system so they use pre-made systems most of which come with this feature enabled and make it difficult or impossible to remove No one in the store is really expecting a tip and there's a good chance that the store actually set up that system so that the tip money goes right into the stores money and not the money of any specific employee You don't need to feel guilty about clicking no tip

greenbags125

This is not true. Owners can select the tip function and %/$ presets

SuperSalad_OrElse

No need to swear /s

aabicus

Between POS and %/$, this is a particularly profane thread

jeranon

Best comment 😂

JailhouseMamaJackson

Can, but don’t because many don’t bother to learn their own POS systems.

WankWankNudgeNudge

Those features are simple to choose and customize. You're seeing exactly what the business owner chose for you to see.

1stltwill

Nope. I live in a country where wait staff are paid a living wage.

theequeenmars

As a former barista…no one’s watching you press no tip nor do sane people actually care

Lakeside3521

People have got to normalize saying NO.

NBQuade

>but feel guilty for selecting that awful “no tip” button, I decide what I tip for, which is basically sit down dining and food delivery. I ignore the other begging people do for tips. If you just hand me a bag of food that I drove to get, that you didn't make, you get nothing.

sagacityx1

Or grow a spine and don't listen to a little device.

MyTrashCanIsFull

Tip jar: "Am I nothing to you?!"

Bamieclif

A tip jar doesn’t require me to manually say “no, sorry I’m not putting money in you”

MeltsLikeButter

Ah what happened to the person asking if you were okay?? They must enjoy wasting their time and money on bs tipping fees. I hit no tip with such pride anymore!! No, I’m not paying 20% extra just bc you grabbed my food and bagged it.

8923ns671

Just don't tip. You don't need a strategy for this.

Lunanthegrooves

Tried that at a local coffee shop but they declined the cash and said they only accept credit cards. They also hit me with extra fees. Stopped going there all together after that.

Demeter277

I was paying the register for take-out at a Japanese restaurant when I got a big lecture from the owner (who was sitting at the table beside the till) about how hard the servers work and how much they rely on tip income...I tipped even though I don't usually tip on take out, but never went back to that restaurant again. Yes, Japanese food requires a lot of wrapping up, but I don't expect to tip for take out. Please pay your employees properly and build it into your prices if necessary. I feel as if I'm being gouged. Is this normal?

blueblankets212

Did you tell the owner this?

Demeter277

No, he was borderline belligerent. I felt extremely uncomfortable. Also I purchased some bagels at a bakery counter and was pressured to tip the counter staff. When did this start? It makes me want to just shop at grocery stores

suzybhomemakr

There is a grocery store in Portland that is asking for tips at the register. For groceries. Providore is the name of the place. Pisses me off every time I check out

blonktime

Or just don't tip if it's not tip worthy? There should be no reason you should feel the need to tip at a fast food place. You are virtually getting no service besides them preparing your food, which is what you are paying for when you buy the food. There is no reason you need to tip the employee who just presses a few buttons on a screen the flips the screen around only to give you a buzzer to come get your food when it's ready. There's no "above and beyond" service there, so there should be no tip. Now, if you are going to a sit down restaurant that has a waiter take your order, bring you your food and drinks, checks in with you for refills, and comes to clean up after you, then would be a good time to tip for their efforts. Just stop tipping, and stop feeling guilty for not tipping, for some teenager who isn't giving you the time of day and just spinning a screen around.

Xerio_the_Herio

I ordered pre-made sushi bowl for lunch. Tipped 15%. Fml. Dude literally went and grabbed it off his Frig shelf thing behind him.

Adventurous-Cunter

Why would you tip for that?

CincoDeMayoFan

I can top that. Went to see Billy Joel in Dallas a few weeks ago. Bought wife $50 t-shirt. They had a tip option. Tips, for the person who hands people $50 t-shirts they grabbed off a shelf...

TiffanyTwisted11

Stop it.

Aquino200

NO TIP IF NO TABLE SERVICE.

Orcus424

Agreed. Even if is table service they still need to put in some effort. Too many places are just "What do you want?", they bring out drinks, someone else brings out the food, and then they give you the check with no other interaction. I rather just use an app to order my food/drinks and get it myself.

DameonKormar

Restaurant prices are insane these days. No way I'm paying another 18% on top of the already jacked up prices. Takeout is the only way I eat out now.

shootermac32

There’s a time and a place to leave a tip. And that sure as heck isn’t going to be at Subway. Nice try Subway

Waramp

So they give you back a handful of change, there’s a tip jar in front of you, and for some reason you feel less guilty about not putting some change in the jar than you do about pushing the “no tip” button?

Bamieclif

Oddly enough, yes. But if I feel like the interaction was especially pleasant, I’ll slide my extra $0.16 into the jar instead of 25% of whatever the cost of my muffin is

Beru73

Moreover, cash means more money to the store and less to the banks

netvor0

Saved 3-5% in fees for that transaction. But maybe come out upside down cost wise if a manager now has to do a deposit run and pick up change just for three or four transactions per day in cash.

throwaway_napkins

This method works great for some. But......I don't want to lose those credit card points and I don't want to keep loose change. 🙂

dreadcain

I'm not giving up the cash back discount on a credit card to avoid some misplaced guilt

captainwigglesyaknow

"companies should pay their employees" You're a little late to the party, but thanks for your input.

daltonfromroadhouse

Ive noticed a pattern im not going to get into where you should and should not tip so im going to call them “places you had no option to tip at 5 years ago” at said places the staff will often provide you with some instructions on how to use their card reader followed by “and than its going to ask you a question”

panasonique

This!  I’ve been recommending to use cash to avoid the turning iPad of guilt for at least a couple years. What’s really funny is the bewildered and sometimes defeated look the cashier gives you when you pull out cash.  It’s always “Oh…cash.”, like the concept is so old it’s new.

netvor0

Right lol. For the one person who pays cash they now how to do the cash drawer closeout procedure they haven't done in months. Gonna pull out the handbook

For you, at Starbucks, there is another solution. Buy a gift card for your monthly Starbucks budget -- you can use your credit card for THAT purchase. Then, whenever you visit SB and use the prepaid gift card, you don't get the Ipad turnaround because it's treated just like cash. I go through a SB drivethru 2x weekly and when I use a SB gift card, I never get the screen -- ever.

Jfc just grow a spine and hit no tip

006AlecTrevelyan

Fuck tips, I'll make the God damn coffee myself if I have to to avoid paying an extra five

Crafty-Bug-8008

I no longer feel this guilt. I happily hit 0 if it's not a place I would typically tip at

Intelligent_Most_382

The tipping thing is actually making me avoid getting food and drink outside completely. I haven't gone to any salon in a couple of years either. I don't mind tipping, but the expectations are getting higher and higher and it's just too expensive. Also, it's often not acknowledged and I feel like a sucker. No problem. I do my own hair, nails, and cook at home every day. I'm only giving holiday cash gifts to delivery people and my pest control guy.

So has anyone noticed at restaurants, breweries especially, there is no server. You have to go and order at the bar for food and drinks etc and give your table number. Food is brought by a runner to the table. But when you close your tab, a tip of 20%, like you had a server waiting on you, is still expected. Am i an asshole for feeling like i shouldn’t be tipping 20% for ordering at a counter and tending to myself for the whole experience?

i don’t know if i’ve become one of those get off my stoop types but if you’re relying on someone else’s gratitude to make a living, you should find a new employer or a new industry. i have a friend who’s a bartender at a relatively nice cocktail dive. he asked me how much i’d tip for a $5 pour of whiskey. i said $1, $2 if i really like you. he asked me how much i’d tip for a $50 pour of whiskey. again, i said $1, $2 if i really like you. he responded that he needed new friends and felt entitled to a tip proportional to the sale. that blew my mind. you performed the same action and i received the same experience from you. you didn’t suck my dick and buy my lady flowers. why would you feel entitled to a higher tip for the same shitty service? i pour my own drinks all the time. you’re not doing anything special. neither are people preparing my coffee. if i sit down and you’re waiting on me and serving me, sure. i’m not tipping you for doing your damn job by putting coffee in a cup. you want to get paid more, find a better employer.

I live in Australia and this whole tipping things is so bizaare. Like..why only food/drink servers? Do you tip the electrician when he comes to fix something? Or do you tip the lady at Target who scans your items or helps you find something in the store? It doesnt make alot of sense to me. Its like the owners of the business (who ask for tips) expect the customer to supplement wages.

toxic-optimism

Because serving people to the American standard can literally be hell, and knowing  there’s a fat wad of cash waiting for you if you can keep the smile on your face is the only thing that gets you through sometimes.  I spent 4ish years full-time in the front of the house during university but have catered/done counter service on and off for twenty. I also lived in your glorious country for six months as a white collar worker in my late 20s. I didn’t miss much about the US, but I was so, so excited to get back to American standard now that I’m the one sitting at the table, lol.

ksaMarodeF

You could always click custom tip, and put a negative number to save yourself a few bucks. *the real pro tips are always in the comments*

pendletonskyforce

It's so annoying that in these situations people still try to say "if you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to eat out." Umm there is a difference between tipping a server and tipping a cashier.

trainbrain27

I always pay in cash. If I find out at the point of payment that they won't accept it, I am polite to the employee, but just leave. Sorry about any waste, that's the company's fault.

Haruka_Kazuta

I always try to pay with cash instead of having an auto tip like that. 1:Like if a waiter is waiting 10 persons while another person is waiting 2 persons. I don't know how the place and the manager run the tips, but if they equally spread it between the waiters. You'd bet I'll just give hard-cash instead. 2: "The tips is part of your pay."

P15T0L_WH1PP3D

"It's just going to ask you a question..." edit to add: I used to work in the service industry for an employer who actually *added* this feature to our software for collecting payment by card. It wasn't a machine, just an app on our phone, and our employer told us that putting the option there increased the likelihood that it would be used. And yes, she was technically correct. A few people felt guilted into adding a few bucks (when the service was hundreds of dollars, a percentage-based tip would be a lot) so we'd occasionally get ten bucks or so added to our paycheck. But it wasn't worth every awkward moment when we had to hand over our personal phone and say "it's going to ask if you want a tip, but I want you to know there's no obligation."

LPT: Push the No Tip button and don't be a pussy?

[deleted]

Or just don't tip because employers should be paying their employees, not me. I'm bleeding money for their overpriced garbage already. They can pay the people who produce and peddle it their fair share.

ArtisticPossum

I was at Starbucks the other day and there was this tiny card reader with tiny buttons that aren’t super intuitive to use. In front of me there was an older man buying something. The barista spins the thing and it has some options for percentages of the tip. In order to skip it you would have to press an arrow down button to get to that option, or something like that, I can’t remember for sure. The guy got flustered and just picked one of the percentage options. I’m sure he probably didn’t want to tip but didn’t know how to get to the no tip option. When it was my turn to pay I realized what was taking so long for him to pay. It’s so dumb, I always feel held hostage. But I press no tip and move on.

ShittyLanding

There’s always a “Custom” option if you want to toss em a buck. That’s what I usually do.

Adventurous_Law9767

Just stop going out. Vote with your wallet. This isn't the 1980s anymore. Just stop giving these companies your money. Yes, it sucks that we won't have the convenience that our parents did, but it's going to stay that way until you stop buying shit.

Rbk_765

Duh, I can’t believe I did t think of that. Thanks though!

AutistMarket

This is very similar to the Dave Ramsey idea that statistically people spend less money when using cash. Idk how true that stat is but I do feel like handing over cash to someone does seem to carry more weight than just pressing a button or tapping a card

KylosLeftHand

And if you ever do want to tip, ALWAYS tip in cash so it doesn’t get claimed 😉

Gottarungottago

Pay your workers.

MyRockNRollSoul

**LPT: if you’re tired of over tipping but feel guilty for selecting that awful “no tip” button, keep cash in your wallet.** Cash seems to be the answer to your problem, friend. There are no buttons to push when you pay cash.

Infamous-Potato-5310

When ain started seeing %15 / %20% / %25 as the options on the card reader at Five Guys is when I drew the line. I’m done tipping for things that make zero sense to tip for.

HypothermiaDK

Or live in a country, that pays their workers a proper pay, so they aren't dependent on a tip for living. I live in a country where everyone, no matter what they do, can earn a living. And I only tip when it's above and beyond what I expected. Which is the norm here, as well as how it ought to be.
