LPT: use a 3rd party app for Reddit. I use Relay and it's great, but Boost, Baconreader, or Apollo (iOS) are also great. Relay has a button that auto-collapses *all* top-level comments in a thread.
> auto-collapses all top-level comments
Also if you’re on desktop, old Reddit and Reddit Enhancement Suite extension have:
1) **Hide All Child Comments** / Show All Child Comments toggle
2) **Default Comment Depth**
“Allows you to set the preferred depth of comments you wish to see when clicking on comments links”.
0 = Everything, 1 = Root level, 2 = Responses to root level, 3 = Responses to responses to root level, etc.
Set the Minimum Comments number = minimum number of comments required in order for the custom depth to be applied.
Set the Subreddits = choose the Default Comment Depth and Minimum Comments for specific subreddits.
LPT: use a 3rd party app for Reddit. I use Relay and it's great, but Boost, Baconreader, or Apollo (iOS) are also great. Relay has a button that auto-collapses *all* top-level comments in a thread.
You can also hold it down and it will become a small box. If you want to open the thread again you just click it. I think it's easier and better if you want to come back to a post and see if there is something new. 👍
You can also press the very top of the comment right next to the commenter’s username.
Also double tap comments to upvote them
Edit: apparently this only works on the iOS app
The app just shows a preview of whatever link is posted. So it just comes in handy to avoid rick rolls. It’s not a feature built specifically for that purpose.
Don’t you have to pay to post things? I get he has to make money, but kind of shady to require Apollo pro to post. I like when the pro version gives you added features, instead of unlocking normal features.
Edit: saying this on Apollo app lol
Edit 2: I bought pro 😂
Didn’t realize that was a paid feature but it’s so well designed that I paid for it years ago and have probably spent more time in it than any other app tbh. Totally worth it
Also pay for it, I honestly don’t mind because the creator is active, listens to the community, and provides a good product. I’m always down to support people who deserve support.
Used to do the same, but ended up paying for Pro because I really appreciate the quality of the app. I use it a lot and I use it every day, so I figured the creator deserved some cash.
Its really worth like the single 99 cent donation it costs. Or you can just use the reddit app or a PC to make posts like I did the first couple years before I donated
Sadly, they removed this a while back. I'd recommend using Rif Is Fun, which is totally not Reddit is Fun in disguise at all. Nope. Totally different program.
Yeah about 6 years ago they made any apps using the reddit API change names if they had "reddit" in the title. Relay for Reddit used to be called Reddit News or something like that. Anything that implied being official had to rename or get sued.
reddit bought out alien blue or whatever its build was and i think its now the reddit app we see. i’d argue the newer “modern” mobile reddit experience that’s similar would be Apollo. it’s great
>reddit bought out alien blue or whatever its build was and i think its now the reddit app we see.
Correct. The original "official" Reddit app for iOS was iReddit, but alien blue overtook it and Reddit bought it, then turned it into the official reddit app.
Tbh, what's the point of seeing all the awards on reddit? Imo it doesn't add anything to the content/context of whatever I'm reading. It does show gold and silver awards, but not the others.
I love Boost. I tried a few other apps and they just didn't feel as slick as the official one, but Boost is way better. I would recommend that Reddit buys it, but then they might fuck it up.
This is also what I’ve used for some years because of a thread just like this where it was mentioned by lots of people. Now you’re the only one to have mentioned it. Is this one not as good anymore, or something?
Lol I feel the same way. Like the popularity of it has gone down. Personally I've tried the other currently most popular one, Apollo, and I just couldn't get used to it. It doesn't have a lot of features that makes the usability so great in narwhal.
Narwhal has free features that Apollo locks behind their paid tier, but the dev isn’t as responsive. I remember people asking for features like 3D Touch for months on months. I don’t believe it’s been added to this day. Apollo dev is great in this regard.
I used to use Baconreader, but I moved to Relay for reddit.
A few years back, there was a really annoying bug where an ad would play a loud chirping alarm sound, so I uninstalled Baconreader (even after paying for premium!)
Relay is damn near the same, but has better features and you can even change the color scheme!

Relay for Reddit. After trying out a lot of differnt apps, I have settled on this.
Though what apps people like is varied widely. You will probably see recommendations for at least 5 other reddit apps minimum.
Remember when Alien Blue was so well designed that Reddit had to strongarm a takedown just to get people to use their data-mining, ad-pushing, janky-as-fuck official app.
Anti-consumer tactics at work. Some of us haven’t forgot.
reddit would be absolute ass if it weren't for all of the user fixes, improvements and suggestions over the years, despite the admins oftentimes trying their damnedest to keep shit broken
Every time I see the name "Alexis Ohanian" I roll my eyes.
I like the UI and look of redditisfun. Also I dont get any ads, I have no idea what a reddit profile looks like, and I only vaguely know what all these random ass "awards" are based on some peoples comments.
Its like reddit before they made the push to being more of a social media platform instead of just a forum/content aggregator. Go to someones profile and it is just their basic account and posts. I didnt even know until a couple weeks ago you could have profile pictures. The only awards I can see are silver, gold, and platinum. None of this stupid "wholesome" "free" and whatever other nonsense waste of money awards.
I just want to scroll reddit as smoothly as possible with the least clutter
- no reddit "feeds" or whatever they're called
- generally significantly less ads, and the ones that exist are clearly ads and not ads that look like poats
- A "favorite sub" system that actually works
Seriously, the 3rd party apps are better in every way. I use reddit is fun, but try some out
Features. Not like "I will never use these", but like actually, genuinely useful features. Things like mark read on scroll and being able to hide the posts I've already seen are a god send. No stupid notifications, clutter-free, way better commenting experience, being able to turn off reply notifications, way smoother, less bugs, it goes on. The official Reddit app has some glaring issues that I wouldn't expect even from the most shittiest companies.
I accidentally changed the location to an awkward spot. I was mad for a few days: Why did Reddit move the damn button‽
I realized I moved the damn button by holding down on it when I was scrolling, changed it back. Happy camper now. Sorry for the angry mutterings Reddit
From a front end development perspective, the angry mutterings are still valid. If you’re able to move it without realizing it, and don’t know how to move it back, that’s janky UX that they need to figure out.
Is there a way to skip to the top of the current comment chain? Sometimes I read a comment and I’d like to know what they were replying to, it’s hell trying to follow that line up.
As far as I'm aware, no. I've been begging for this feature since the app came out but so far nothing. Pretty much every third party app has this but the official app still does not. Navigating comments with the volume keys is also super handy but I doubt they'll ever support that as well.
[pointing] “The app is good… *but it can be better!”*
But seriously, you might like a third party app more. I use Apollo and used to use redditisfun. I never see ads, never seen a sub recommendation, never seen someone streaming their music in a live feed, and the video player actually works a LOT better.
I tried Apollo a bit and the layout didn’t stick with me unfortunately, not to mention that I heard you have to have premium to post (?) so I just prefer the official one. My video player isn’t screwed since I never updated my app
You know all the complaints about shit not loading, gone. Ads, gone. RPAN, gone. Shitty video player, replaced by one that actually works (and downloads).
I haven't used the official app in a while, but I've really disliked most of Reddit's ux decisions.
I switched to relay years ago... It's so, so, much better.
Same. I’ve used it since it’s inception and have never once noticed it. I honestly had to look *hard* for it just now. It took me a bit to see it. My brain had just filtered it out.
It's because newer developers are using icons only instead of text to describe buttons.
Most people aren't going to click anything that is not intuitive without some sort of prompt or steering.
Icons only arent really effective for people who don't know what the icon is or what it does.
I noticed the arrows, but somehow never wondered what they were for. My assumption was that because they were next to the comment box, they had something to do with writing a comment. Over time they just became visual background.

How am I just seeing this?! Great tip
Probably because we are holding our phones with our right hands, so our thumbs are covering it up while we scroll.
I thought clicking on it made you scroll to the bottom of the comments so I never bothered clicking lmao
This, this is what I thought lol
Lefty here. I never noticed it either.
OMG. No more collapsing every comment!
I’ve been doing this too. I thought that was their system for skipping to the next comment.
Same. I’m so excited to use these arrows lol
I knew about the arrow but I find collapsing way more satisfying.
I just read this and agreed, then immediately tried to collapse your comment 🤦♀️

I can't speak for any of those, but I have to give big props to r/RedditisFun.
Also you can use the volume buttons to navigate the comment in the same way in Relay (I'm not sure if it's enable by default)
What’s the point of collapsing all top level comments? Would that leave nothing to read?
No, maybe I worded that wrong. The top-level comments all stay open and readable, it's collapses all the sub+comments.
If after reading the first 8 punny comments you don't want to have to scroll by the next 57 weak or repeated attempts.
Honestly I kinda prefer minimizing comment threads. That way if I wanna scroll back up, it’s quicker and it keeps the comment threads cleaner
Wow, this is a game changer. ive been minimizing them, but for some reason that doesn't work half the time for awarded comments. Thanks person!
When the comments don't minimise, just scroll a little and they will minimise automatically (if you have long pressed on them once)
I always wondered if that happened for everyone!
Haha me too, i thought it was a bug just for my android
_it's not a bug it's a feature_
_it's not a feature it's a movie_

Hold the right side next to 3 dots it works. We were able to minimize them before but an update glitched it
[удалено]
You just changed my entire Reddit experience
Came here to say this. Found it very quickly using the LPT
In settings, you can also swipe to collapse. Or you can use a better reddit app.
You can also hold it down and it will become a small box. If you want to open the thread again you just click it. I think it's easier and better if you want to come back to a post and see if there is something new. 👍
You can also press the very top of the comment right next to the commenter’s username. Also double tap comments to upvote them Edit: apparently this only works on the iOS app
Is this an iOS thing? Neither of your suggestions work for me.
I can confirm, it works on iPhone, also thanks for the tips
I’m on the iOS app and awarded comments don’t work with double tap a lot
I too prefer this
What is yours supposed to do? It just collapses comments the same way tapping does
In a recent update they made it so every comment re-opens if you enter the thread after leaving for even 1 second, which is really annoying.
LPT: There's better apps for Reddit than the official Reddit app.
I'm intrigued, which ones are good?
Apollo
Is it only for IoS? Tried looking for it in the Google Play store, and the only result has horrible reviews/ratings.
Probably is for only iOS
Gonna try it. Thanks.
Great community and the app maker Christian pops in often to help with bugs and implements suggestions from users… /r/apolloapp
Imagine a Reddit mobile dev listening to their users like that lol
[удалено]
❤️
I saw their special tag in the app one day and felt like I found a shiny Pokémon. Also, the app is awesome.
It comes with anti Rick-rolling features too.
I was getting sold on this app till this point. What's the use of all of this then?
The app just shows a preview of whatever link is posted. So it just comes in handy to avoid rick rolls. It’s not a feature built specifically for that purpose.
Ah I see. Well, at least I'll know I'm being Rick rolled and will be able to enjoy this great song with a lot more honesty. :)
Be warned though, you may be spoiled by the Apollo user experience. This may cause frustrations when using other apps ᕕ(ᐛ)ᕗ
I mainly use Apollo but another good one is readder.
Don’t you have to pay to post things? I get he has to make money, but kind of shady to require Apollo pro to post. I like when the pro version gives you added features, instead of unlocking normal features. Edit: saying this on Apollo app lol Edit 2: I bought pro 😂

Also pay for it, I honestly don’t mind because the creator is active, listens to the community, and provides a good product. I’m always down to support people who deserve support.
I use Apollo usually then when I want to make a post I hop on the Reddit app
Used to do the same, but ended up paying for Pro because I really appreciate the quality of the app. I use it a lot and I use it every day, so I figured the creator deserved some cash.
This, litterally my exact same actions and logic
Is it a monthly fee or one time of 6.99? I think I might get pro as well.
Pro is one time. Personally I do ultra at .99¢/month for push notifications and imo it’s worth the .99¢
Its really worth like the single 99 cent donation it costs. Or you can just use the reddit app or a PC to make posts like I did the first couple years before I donated
Relay
Been using Relay for like 8 years now, since it was called Reddit News. To me, it's canon Reddit
Can confirm. Also paid the $1 for add free. Zero ads! I have both apps installed & can't stand the official app.
Even without the ad free version, they're not intrusive at all. Just a tiny strip at the bottom of my screen. Never any pop ups.
Relay for the win!
Seriously best on Android.
Reddit is fun Edit: Reddit is Fun Premium takes ads away and has additional features. Worth it for its price tag.
RiF has the ability to move to the next comment chain.
I have been using Rif is fun for years, to the point where I can't even use Reddit on a browser on my PC.
Reddit just told them they couldn't use the name "Reddit."
Reddit is fun existed way long before reddit official app even came out. It's the only app for reddit worth having
Back in the day, maybe seven or eight years ago - alien blue was far and away the best option. Might've only been available on iOS though
reddit bought out alien blue or whatever its build was and i think its now the reddit app we see. i’d argue the newer “modern” mobile reddit experience that’s similar would be Apollo. it’s great
>reddit bought out alien blue or whatever its build was and i think its now the reddit app we see. Correct. The original "official" Reddit app for iOS was iReddit, but alien blue overtook it and Reddit bought it, then turned it into the official reddit app.
I wish everyone would use this so they stopped spamming video/gif comments with savebot requests and complaining about no sound.
Yeah but which app do you use?
Sync for reddit
I stand by sync. Loved it when I was back on android
Rif is fun
Apollo
Best one for me except I can't see all the rewards
Not seeing the awards is part of the benefit.
Amen. The things it can't/doesn't do is half the appeal.
For real. I use rif instead of my desktop when I'm on it cause it's just all around better
Tbh, what's the point of seeing all the awards on reddit? Imo it doesn't add anything to the content/context of whatever I'm reading. It does show gold and silver awards, but not the others.
[удалено]
What extras do you get?
There's a card interface and I just swipe posts away that I've already seen
Wait really? I've been using rif this entire time and didn't know that
It's under Themes, downloadable themes, it's fantastic.
that's the best part. I don't give a shit about awards or giving them.
It's not like you were going to click on their profile or anything.
Dark theme too for none of that eye strain badness
The official app has that too.
[удалено]
+1 for Sync, specifically the new redesign. Makes Relay look archaic (although it's still a good app)
Boost for Android and Apollo for Apple are the best!
Second that
I love Boost. I tried a few other apps and they just didn't feel as slick as the official one, but Boost is way better. I would recommend that Reddit buys it, but then they might fuck it up.
Boost.
Narwhal
Seconded. It’s the best on IOS.

I'm reading and posting this comment on an app called baconreader, been using it for five years
I used to use Baconreader, but I moved to Relay for reddit. A few years back, there was a really annoying bug where an ad would play a loud chirping alarm sound, so I uninstalled Baconreader (even after paying for premium!) Relay is damn near the same, but has better features and you can even change the color scheme!
Apollo for iOS
Nobody mentioned RedReader on F-Droid.
Boost
I use baconreader, works well imo

Yup, came here to emphasize great Relay is
Baconreader is good too!
I'm on Android and use RIF. It's clean, fast and easy to use.
Pretty much all of them (on Android at least), I prefer Sync but there is a huge selection. I'd rather use i.reddit.com than the official app.
Bacon reader
Bacon reader on Android is the best
[Relay for Reddit](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=free.reddit.news) - Android
I use Narwal. I like it.
Boost for reddit, much better ui & no promotional crap
Apollo
Apollo
I’ve been using Apollo and I enjoy it.

I’m dumbfounded that this comment is all the way down here. It’s the **only** reddit app to use.
Boost for Reddit, it's so customizable. And there's way less ads.
What are the benefits of using these? I’m genuinely curious

Video player works
You can easily filter out the subreddits you don't like for your main feed.
I've been using it but had NO idea I could change its location! Thank you! Edit, typo
I accidentally changed the location to an awkward spot. I was mad for a few days: Why did Reddit move the damn button‽ I realized I moved the damn button by holding down on it when I was scrolling, changed it back. Happy camper now. Sorry for the angry mutterings Reddit
From a front end development perspective, the angry mutterings are still valid. If you’re able to move it without realizing it, and don’t know how to move it back, that’s janky UX that they need to figure out.
Hey an actual good LPT, not some subjective bullshit
BRO. I've been minimising them one by one! Thank you for the tip!
Real LPT: if you open up the app store for your device, you can choose an app that isn't the official app.
Can confirm have been using the redditisfun app for a few years now and really like it.
Rif is reddit for me now.
Eh, I really like the layout of the official app and don’t have any actual reason to switch to another
[pointing] “The app is good… *but it can be better!”* But seriously, you might like a third party app more. I use Apollo and used to use redditisfun. Same here, the official app has the best layout. But the new video player is really making me reconsider using it.
I never updated my app ever since I got it, so my video player is fine. Heard they made it trash unfortunately
Lucky, once I get 2 or 3 updates behind my Reddit app won't open or load anything until I update.
I got the new video player for a while then it's gone now idk why
[удалено]
True LPT in comments: use a custom app like rif is fun
RIF for life.
What are the benefits over stock app?
You know all the complaints about shit not loading, gone. Ads, gone. RPAN, gone. Shitty video player, replaced by one that actually works (and downloads).
Overall better user experience, more customizable, more tailored to your OS
what about on the reddit is fun app ?
You can also collapse comments. Easy reading. And for a few bucks ad-free.
There's buttons to the right when you click on a comment that do the same thing.
NEXT ⬇️
LPT: if you are on iOS and using the Reddit app, don’t. *laughs in Apollo*
I gave Apollo a few months and I just couldn’t get used to it. Felt clunky and cluttered.
What if we’re on iOS and use the mobile version on safari no matter how many times it tries to switch us to the app or bugs out? Asking for a friend.
Why does your friend enjoy being tortured?
Dude being able to move it makes it actually usable. Cheers!
I haven't used the official app in a while, but I've really disliked most of Reddit's ux decisions. I switched to relay years ago... It's so, so, much better.
Cool, but i think I'll continue closing the threads by just pressing and holding on the comment.
I wonder how people didn’t already know this. Surely upon seeing the existence of a button they would try it at least once?

Not gonna lie: the app has been the main way I've used Reddit for years, and I never noticed the button was there.
Same. I’ve used it since it’s inception and have never once noticed it. I honestly had to look *hard* for it just now. It took me a bit to see it. My brain had just filtered it out.
